Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) programme, is a part of the over all objective of the Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) program. UNICEF's Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) programme started in 2009 and now covers 255 villages and 155 schools in eight flood-prone districts mostly in northern Bihar. Of 38 districts in the state 28 are flood prone. Earth quakes are also common, five districts being in seismic zone V and 21 in zone IV. The programme, implemented by seven NGO partners, not only empowers schools and communities in identifying risks it also assists them in initiating disaster risk reduction (DRR) measures and linking them to government programmes. This is the photo I've chosen to use for making a reduction carving. A reduction carving is when you reduce the image to 2-10 colors and carve a separate block for each color. You then stamp them, beginning with the lightest color, building up to the darkest color. The trickiest part is getting them to line up perfectly (this is called the registration). I've played around with this photo using different color reductions to see what would be the best version for my project.

Edit: Okay, I wasn't exactly correct in calling it a reduction carving. A reduction carving is when you carve a block, stamp that color and then carve away additional *on the same block* and stamp that, working from lightest to darkest color. The bad thing about this is that you need to make as many prints as you will want because once you carve away for the next color, you can't make more. What I am doing is actually a *multi-block* print, where each color is its own carved block and they get stamped progressively, much in the same way.

Hornsby/Ku-Ring-Gai District conducted a Hazard Reduction around Fiddletown today. The burn was approximately 75 hectares, from all reports the burn was successful. Much of the perimeter was only accessible by 4wd or foot.

Unfortunately 75% had been light by the time we arrived, and most of the activity was mopping up and patrolling.

It was good to actually renew a few friendships from years gone by. It’s great to get out and meet some of our followers. Please feel free to share and tag these photos with family, friends and Brigade members.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District Commander Col. Kirk Gibbs joined Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis Jan. 8 to announce that the Corps will begin interim risk reduction measures to improve flood protection on the Los Angeles River during El Niño

The District received emergency funding and began work on an area of the river that spans from Griffith Park to Elysian Valley installing about one-fifth of a mile of the 3-mile barrier that will effectively raise the sides of the river channel in strategic locations, temporarily increasing its capacity for the winter storm rains.

Accelerated maintenance activities, such as additional non-native vegetation removal and structural repairs, are anticipated to continue throughout the storm season to improve conditions in the LA River.

The barriers are temporary and will be removed within two months of the last big storm.

Rosa, a volunteer, prepares a vegetable stew for the Elder Stubbs allotments, run by Restore, an Oxfordshire-based mental health charity that helps people to recover from mental illness, develop skills and lead meaningful lives. A part of the food served at the Elder Stubbs is sourced from the Oxford Food Bank.

The Oxford Food Bank is a food charity with a double mission: feed the community and protect the environment. It collects surplus food from local supermarkets and wholesalers and delivers it for free to around 60 registered charities in the Oxford area. Even though the food received is rejected by supermarkets as "surplus" food, it is good quality food that would have been thrown away - most often because of a date stamped on it. "Best Before" is still good after.

Note: This photo is part of an ongoing project on food waste that I have been zooming in over the past years. Most of these photos have never been published anywhere and have sat on an external hard-drive for too long. I decided to use more of Flickr, so over the next months I will be uploading here photos taken for the project (aiming at one-per-day). If you're interested in the subject, keep an eye on the "Love Food Not Waste" album.

While one billion people across the planet suffer from hunger, the amount of food wastage taking place every single day in developed countries is obscene. With up to a third of all food thrown away, producing food simply to bin it is a waste of all those precious resources – land, water, energy – that were put into growing, processing and transporting it.

My photo project, ‘Love Food Not Waste’, illustrates some of the levels of the food waste reduction pyramid: Feeding Landfills is the lowest level in the hierarchy and should be illegal; Feeding AD Plants, which, despite not being the best way of dealing with surplus food, at least generates modest amounts of energy, and also fertiliser; and Feeding Bellies, where food waste heroes such as freegans and food charities help rescue some of the surplus food and re-distribute it to people in need.

Original lives here.

This program had a 4-step process. It was fairly straightforward and help docs were with step-by-step instructions. The save action was quick, and simple.

The only drawbacks were the original exif data was lost, and photos are available to be saved only in the highest quality. If the product is purchased, that version allows the exif to be preserved and quality to be compromised.
