May 22, 2008. Boston, MA.
Marchers walked from Worcester to Boston and rallied at the State House to press for reforms to CORI, (the Criminal Offender Record Inquiry) system. Sponsors of the march want the legislature to institute reforms to shorten time periods for sealing records, remove non-convictions from the CORI system and remove the "check box" from hiring applications. Supporters of the reforms believe tens of thousands of people with CORI records are denied access to jobs and housing long after they have completed their probation. Gov. Patrick introduced a bill to cut the time in half to have criminal records sealed. That proposal has stalled in the legislature along with the Public Safety Act which would also reduce waiting periods and provide protection for job seekers with criminal records.
