In dry environments, like in the desert, some plants have been required to evolve in order to survive. These plants don't have access to enough water to have a constant stream evaporating through the stomata. Plants like the one pictured here, have formed reduced leaves to help them survive. These special evolved leaves thin, narrow and in cases such as the cactus plant they are used for defense.
