Still another few Mb to shave off

Oneida County’s large dairy discussion group met with CCE staff at Brabant Farm in Verona to learn more about how soil compaction is affected by tillage practices. By digging a trench in two areas, one managed with conventional tillage and the other with zone tillage, the group was able to compare and contrast soil structure and root development of this year’s corn crop under the two systems.

Soil compaction is the squeezing of soil – often as a result of field operations – reducing the pore spaces available for air and water storage and movement. Compacted soil negatively influences seed germination, seedling emergence, root growth, nutrient uptake – all phases of crop growth and production.

Among the controllable variables that contribute to soil compaction are: traffic over the field; the number of passes; tillage; equipment weight and tire inflation; tire and axle number; working wet or poorly drained soils.

At Brabant Farm, the Van Lieshouts have been experimenting with zone tillage, with one of the goals being to reduce soil compaction. Zone tillage is a reduced tillage method that limits soil disturbance to the planting row, leaving the area between the crop rows undisturbed. In addition to reducing soil compaction, zone tillage offers potential benefits in the form of: preservation of soil organic matter; reduced costs of field operations; improved timeliness of operations; and greater crop tolerance of extreme wet or dry seasons.

Reduce speed! I rode up a hill, turned around, and saw this sign. That made me feel better about using granny gear. I always feel like a wuss when I have to resort to that.

Our latest (and hopefully last?) winter storm, snapped from my office window earlier this week.

I've decided to do a big upload of most of the Valencia Bioparc photos on their own rather than upload them in and amongst the general Valencia stuff.

The day we flew to Valencia we were waiting for a taxi 4.30 AM and I felt the weight of my backpack - heavy! I decided to take an L series long lens out which was very heavy - and I almost never use along lens on these trips - but I replaced it with a 70-300 IS zoom that is ideal for travel. I haven't used it for years and was struggling to find it as the taxi arrived. I remembered that this lens wasn't the best I had used bit it would have to do. I knew there was a big zoo at Valencia but truthfully, I never thought we would go to it. The last time I went to a zoo would be over twenty years ago.

When we got to the Bioparc I put the long lens on and didn't take it off until we left. I would have been frustrated without it - it made a massive difference. Many of the photos are taken through dirty plate glass which reduced the contrast even further than my lens does. The animals can stay a long way out of the public's way - and they choose to! The day was generally overcast, which, to be fair, was probably a good thing, reducing the chance of harsh shadows.

There are no masterpieces but they'll do for a first attempt.

So, I originally took this photo to prove that Celeste didn't have boring eye's like she told me one Sunday morning.

I took this indoors, no flash, and mucked up the focus on the eye (although the eyebrow is in perfect clarity) - but I still like the result.

It's been photoshopped quite a lot to reduce colour saturation, increase the exposure and the shadows etc...

The safest way to drive when it rains is to reduce your speed. When you drive at lower speed, you will have better control over your car. In heavy rain the windshield wipers can sometimes struggle in removing the water quickly enough for you to be able to have a clear sight of the road. In heavy rain, the water can often flood the street with water, making driving more challenging.
