A lot of my friends are the sort that get all bent out of shape when I start taking down trees. Interestingly, these are also the sort that insist on organic foods. Well, let me tell you this, even organic foods need sunlight and the vegetable garden has been hemmed in by large deciduous trees for some time. So this year's harvest was fine, but just average...not going to win any blue ribbons at the county fair for sure.
Introduced, yearlong green, perennial herb with reduced stems (appearing absent). Bulbs are rounded, light brown and vertically ridged; bulbils are sessile and formed from old bulbs. Leaves are trifoliolate, with obcordate leaflets, 1ā4 cm long and wide; petioles are hairless or nearly so and 5ā20 cm long; stipules taper into the petiole. Flowerheads are 8ā15-flowered in an umbel-like cyime held well above the leaves. Flowers have 5 sepals and 5 pink, 12ā18 mm long, fused petals. Fruit are not formed in Australia. Flowering occurs throughout the year. A native of South America, it is planted as an ornamental, but has escaped to be a widespread environmental weed.

Note: this was bliss. Comfort food reduced, lightened and elevated to something special. The depth of flavor in the broth/consommƩ was insane...I could have eaten a few bowls of that alone. An exceptional little bowl of food.
The accompanying 2005 Chinon 'Les Picasses' Olga Raffault (Loire Valley, France), made from Cabernet Franc was an excellent pairing - lots of black cherry, a good structure and a certain streak of minerality which was quite refreshing.
