The building that gave rise to the term "Redbrick University", this is the Victoria Building, the first purpose-built building for the University of Liverpool, dating from 1892.
Originally containing libraries, lecture theatres, offices and the like, the Victoria was converted into a Gallery & Museum in 2008, but to me it is one of the places where I sat my final exams in the 1980s.
The building is listed, but to my surprise it is only listed at Grade 2.

The church was rebuilt in 1754 by Robert Vyner incorporating some of the original medieval work. It is built in redbrick with ashlar dressings, tiled roof and copper steeple.
There is a western tower, nave and chancel.
The three stage tower has reused medieval corner pinnacles. It is topped by a copper clad spire with a weathervane.
The nave has semicircular headed windows to both sides with leaded panes. The chancel east window is also semicircular with stained-glass. The interior is quite light and elegant, and the chancel arch has Ionic Pilasters.
At the west end is a small gallery over the door. The octagonal pulpit is from the 18th century and originally came from Skelton church in West Yorkshire. The church originally had box pews but was re-seated in 1914.
The font is octagonal, 15th century which originally came from Lawton, near Gainsborough.
There is a monument to Sir Thomas Vyner Esquire, a leading banker to Charles II, and on the south side one to Sir Thomas Vyner, former Lord Mayor of London. The monuments were erected in 1672.
The banker is shown in full wig and gown and the mayor wears his chain of office. Both of them were carved in 1673 by Jasper Latham. The tombs were removed from Saint Mary Woolnoth church, London by Sir Robert Vyner when the church was built in 1756. There is also a memorial to Frederick Vyner, who was "murdered by brigands in the Kingdom of Greece".
Bartow County Courthouse, Cartersville, Georgia. The Bartow County Courthouse, built in 1902, is an historic redbrick Classical Revival style county courthouse located on Courthouse Square in Cartersville, Bartow County, Georgia. Designed by the Louisville, Kentucky architectural firm of Kenneth McDonald & Co. together with self-taught Georgia architect J. W. Golucke (James Wingfield Golucke), who is said to have designed 27 courthouses in Georgia and 4 in Alabama, it is Bartow County's third courthouse and the second one built in Cartersville. The first courthouse built in Cassville, while the county was known as Cass County, was burned by General Sherman's troops in 1864. In 1867 the county seat was moved to Cartersville and the second courthouse was built in 1873. It proved to be unsatisfactory because court proceedings had to be halted while trains passed by on the nearby railroad. In 1992 a courthouse annex known as the Frank Moore Administration and Judicial Center was completed. While the 1902 building is still used for some court purposes, most of the proceedings are held in the 1992 building. On September 18, 1980, the 1902 courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
I love the wee portico. It could do with a sandblasting though.
George Street near the Goulburn Street lights. I'm taking a punt and putting this one in the 19th rather than the early 20th century. UPDATE, 12-2-06: 1936 says the dedication plaque and I doubt if it was dedicated more than a few years after it was finished.
Update, 29-1-06: Don't know yet when it was built but the design is Victorian Free Gothic or Victorian Tudor (both circa 1840 - circa 1890). They're very similar styles when it comes to red brick churches.
Turret group, do you reckon those are turrets or spires? I'm leaning towards spires.
I never noticed this creepy Victorian redbrick in Temple Bar until I was sitting on the curb watching a band play under it. I must have passed here thousands of times - I should look up more often!
Saw this succulent growing on an ancient wall whilst out walking. Nature always prevails.

Kane County Courthouse, constructed in 1892. This red brick, limestone, and iron frame building was designed by architects Edbrooke and Burnham and is neo-Romanesque in spirit but not detail. The courthouse is medieval in its massiveness and permanence, but 19th century in its high, square dome, it smooth brick face, and in the variety of its window courses. The structure is masonry wall construction reinforced with iron beams and the load-bearing walls are more than a foot thick. A variety of materials are included in the building, including red brick, red sandstone, chocolate brick, cut stone, terra cotta, structural and decorative iron work, marble, tile, red oak, white pine, Douglas fir, slate and tin. It replaced the previous riverstone courthouse which burned in 1890. - (courtesy Geneva Historical Society)
A bronze statue of British composer Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) ignores just the sort of horrendous 1970's concrete-and-redbrick architectural monstrosity he would have hated in life, as he gazes towards the far more aesthetically-pleasing 12th century Worcester Cathedral across from the High Street.
And that's quite some moustache...
