The Zollern Colliery

A castle of labour

At first sight palatial redbrick facades and artistically adorned gables on buildings dotted around a grassy square are more reminiscent of an aristocratic residence than a coal mine. This was exactly one of the ideas behind the architecture.

Today the “mansion of labour” in the west of Dortmund is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and impressive testimonies to Germany’s industrial history. The engine house with its famous Jugendstil (art nouveau) doorway is already an icon. But the museum’s outstanding industrial architecture is only one of many different attractive facets. The various sections of the exhibition will take you into a world of harsh working conditions, and the stories of the men and women who worked in coalmining during the 20th century will bring this vividly to life.

Pomorze Gdańskie, Poland

The ruins of a medieval gotic castle built by the Teutonic Knights in 14-th century. In 1772 Radzyn troved under prussian authority. From that moment started successive demolition of the fortress, it's bricks were assigned to built new houses and town hall. In 1837, works were hold up. In sixtiests of XIX century the castle was secured, 100 years later curtains were restored and now there is museum.

I like this castle a lot. Inside is many place for walking and, of course, beautiful view from the tower :))

Its stare fixed on the coffee shop door through which its owner had disappeared, this dog sat patiently for at least 15 minutes before I left, not sure how long it had to wait.

View on the St. Mary Magdalene Cathedral from the window of the hotel where we lived in Wrocław :)

St. Mary Magdalene Cathedral in Wrocław, Poland, is a gothic church located between Szewska and Łaciarska street close to the central market square, established in the 13th century. Currently it is a cathedral of the Polish Catholic Church. During the Second World War the church was seriously damaged. In 1945 the legendary Sinner's Bell, which was the biggest Silesian bell, was also damaged. St Mary Magdalene was rebuilt during the period 1947-1953. The bridge connecting the two towers is called "Mostek Pokutnic" (The Penitents Bridge) and it's a great viewpoint on the city. A legend says that the shadows visible on the bridge are the souls of the girls who used to seduce men without wanting to be married, being scared of housekeeping.

Widok na Katedrę Św. Marii Magdaleny z okien hotelu, w którym mieszkaliśmy we Wrocławiu :)

Katedra św. Marii Magdaleny we Wrocławiu – gotycki kościół między ulicami Szewską i Łaciarską w pobliżu wrocławskiego Rynku, dawniej jedna z dwóch far miejskich. W ostatnich dniach II wojny światowej kościół stracił w pożarze hełmy wież i dach nawy, jednak mury zachowały się w stosunkowo dobrym stanie.

Designed by Jesse Hartley, Stanley Dock opened on 4 August 1848. The dock is the only one in Liverpool which was built inland, all the others being built out from the foreshore. The original quay warehouses are of a similar design to those at Albert Dock and are grade II* listed buildings. The warehouses were built to five storeys, covering an area of 12,000 sq yd (10,000 m2). Between 1897-1901, the southern part of the dock was filled in to build the large Stanley Dock Tobacco Warehouse by Anthony George Lyster. The northern warehouse has since been developed in to a hotel devoted to the White Star Line's RMS Titanic liner, which has strong links to the area's history of docks and shipping.

I didn't know what this building was when I thought of the title but this is the home of the Department for Work and Pensions, Wear View House, 1 Eden Street, West Sunderland SR1 3EY. The office for Universal Penury.

...old redbrick church ready for Christmas - very nice right now...

In 25 November in my hometown was unveiled a monument to Philippe Henri de Girard. His name took the name of the town - Żyrardów :)

Philippe Henri de Girard - was a French engineer and inventor of the first flax spinning frame in 1810. He was also the uncredited inventor of food preservation using tin cans. In 1825 he was hired by the government of the Kingdom of Poland to develop the Polish textile industry. He became the expert of the Polish government, as well as the Bank of Poland. Because of financial support of the latter, in 1831 he organised the first major factory of his project in Marymont near Warsaw. Two years later he moved with his business to the village of Ruda Guzowska, where the factory had better prospects. Soon it became a great success and brought fame and prosperity both to the settlement and to Girard. In honour of Girard, Ruda Guzowska was renamed to Żyrardów, a toponym derived of the polonised spelling of Girard's name. In 1844 Girard returned to France, where he planned to open more factories. However, he died the following year. Apart from the town of Żyrardów (currently one of the biggest satellite towns of Warsaw), Girard became a name-sake for a street and a college in 18th arrondissement of Paris and two lycea in Żyrardów and Avignon.

Od 25 listopada mamy w Żyrardowie nowy pomnik - Filipa de Girarda, od którego nazwiska wzięło nazwę miasto :)

Filip de Girard - francuski inżynier i wynalazca. W wieku 14 lat skonstruował urządzenie do pozyskiwania energii z fal morskich. Urządzenie to zrewolucjonizowało proces produkcji tkanin lnianych.

The amazing 'Great Stairway' Drainage system is one of Australia's finest. consisting of many features throughout the system. The stairs themselves are very impressive with about 7 knee high stairs giving an overall climb of about 3 meters. Once climbed, it leads to this large redbrick chamber. Enormous in size!

I love this church window. The red brick wall, the greenery around, the mini steeple, the cemetery - it exudes peacefulness to me. A quiet, soothing atmosphere.

The old Bethlehem Steel Headquarters Building on Third Street in Bethlehem, Pa.

This was the night of the supermoon, the brightest of the year, and the sky was luminous, amazingly so for a bright city. The reddish glow on the bricks here comes from the street lights and a concert being held a block away in front of the blast furnaces.

The company actually left two vacant HQ buildings in this city. The Martin Tower, built across the river in 1972, replaced this one, which dates to 1916. Redevelopment proposals have been offered for both buildings but there are major obstacles at both: Asbestos in the Martin Tower and general decay here. I opened the chained front doors of this building as far as they would go and a wave of moldy air came wafting out at me.

This, now disused, Italianate sewage pumping station is alongside the Chesterfield canal in Worksop. It really is a very imposing construction and is in excellent condition, I hope another use can be found for the building as it would be a shame to lose it.

Autumn is still lingering on campus. Also I am enjoying using my wide angled function on the iPhone 11pro
