This hawk was eating some fresh squirrel meat.

We didn't get any good shots of this bird with its wings in the up position, I liked this one where its banking just enough to get a nice look at both wings and still have some eye contact.

Adult Rufous-morph Red-tailed Hawk.

Redtail hawks come in many flavors. The darker ones are some of my favorites.

 

I originally identified this bird as a "dark-morph", but upon further research it is most likely a rufous morph or intermediate color phase.

 

Redtails are highly variable in their plumage and a dark bird can be a rufous or intermediate phase or a dark morph. It's often a tough call depending on lighting conditions, etc., but a fun challenge none the less with this species.

Red-tailed Hawk. We were privileged to see her hunt a short while after this was taken.

Location: Gunnison National Forest, Colorado, USA

Got up at 5 am and drove to the Withlacoochee Forest to shoot some birds and wildlife. Saw absolutely nothing. Step out back this evening and hear this Hawk Screeching. Go figure.

Just north of the Arlington Exit and across the Stillaguamish River at that overpass at the top of the hill.
