Red tailed hawk in my backyard. Two mockingbirds who nest nearby were attacking it in an effort to scare it off.
After catching the Coastal Shrew (Scapanus Orarius) on the other side of the tracks, the RTHA flew up into a nearby tree where it continued to toy with its wriggling prey.
The mockingbird has spotted the hawk, but is above him where the hawk can't see him. Hawks see better below and to the front of their heads than above and behind them. He's in for a surprise.
You don't see it in the pictures, but there was a hummingbird zipping around squeaking at the hawk.
Off to start the day....and a little springboard of a branch :) This is my very distant snag.....I pray it lasts a few more years since it hosts many a bird.
