Jordan/2019 (The Wadi Rum desert valley also known as the Valley of the Moon, is located at 1600 meters above sea level in a mountainous region formed by granite and sandstone. It is the longest wadi in Jordan. The name rum means "high" or "high" in the Aramaic language, and its pronunciation denotes the nearby Arab influence. The highest point of Uadi Rum is Mount Jabal Umm ad Dami, with 1854 meters above sea level.

Wadi Rum has been inhabited since prehistoric times by various cultures, including the Nabataeans, who have left their mark on the petroglyphs. Since 2007, the desert inhabits several Bedouin tribes.

Wadi Rum is known by the British army officer T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), who used it as a base of operations during the Arab Rebellion of 1917-1918. In the Eighties, one of the most spectacular rock formations of Wadi Rum was named The Seven Pillars of Wisdom in honor of the book of the same name by Lawrence, although it has nothing to do with it...)

Time for a change of scenery and decor.

This picture of a sea lion (with 2 marine iguanas in the background, which are found only in the Galapagos) was taken in 2007 while visiting the island of Bartolome, in the Galapagos.

At the time I was using a Canon PowerShot A95.

I'm sorry if I have not visited your photostream recently. I am very busy this week.

A l'époque j'utilisais une Canon PowerShot A95.

My most 'War of the Worlds' shot of the sea forts. I don't use my 20mm that often, but every now and again it hits the spot...

More information on the Sea Forts on wikipedia and here. Was inspired by doctor boogies amazing set of pictures, and also seing them again on BBC's Coast reminded me how much I wanted to get out there this summer. Got very wet, only slightly seasick, but well worth it.

The Maunsell Forts are towers built in the Thames (and Mersey) estuaries during the Second World War to help defend the United Kingdom. They were operated as army and navy forts, and named for their designer, Guy Maunsell. The forts were decommissioned during the late 1950s and later used for other activities including pirate radio broadcasting.

There are seven towers in the Red Sands group at the mouth of the Thames Estuary. The towers had been connected by metal grate walk-ways. In 1959 consideration was given to refloating the Red Sands Fort and bringing the towers ashore but the costs were prohibitive.

During the early 21st century, in response to proposals to demolish the fort, a group named Project Redsands was formed to try to preserve it. It was the only fort that could be visited safely from a platform in between the legs of one of the towers. The fort was inspected by the structural engineering company Structural Repairs in 2021. They found that 6 of the towers had severe structural defects, with elements already lost to the sea, the 7th tower also had the same defects, with elements due to imminently fall into the sea. The fort could not be accessed safely in its present condition.

That was a dangerous place to stand, the soil was not stable, it was behind the safe line, the drop next to me was 50-60 foot strait in the water. Hum...may I should not have been there...

...and very good their boat trip was too. Oh, and they supply waterproof trousers and jackets, and if they recommend them I'd take them - you do get soaked...

On my recent trip to the Redsand forts I took both the DSLR and the compact, which enabled me to get some video footage of the lifeboat, as well as some stills. I hope you find this short clip interesting.

As they came right alongside us, I was able to hand the crew a donation, ship to ship, in memory of my late parents who would collect door to door for the RNLI each year. I rather liked that.

The cats responded to our return in different ways. Because of Jimmy and Mack's tendency to have accidents I ended up confining them in a bedroom turned into a pee-protected cat paradise (better than boarding cages). Very unusual for him, Jimmy hid under a bed when he saw George and Lucy. Mack seemed to think the reason I hadn't been at his beck and call for three weeks was that he wasn't meowing loud enough - he has since corrected that perceived problem. Ella, who had free range of the house, has been in CONSTANT contact me and purring so loud it almost sounds like a cry.
