I almost didn't get any lc-a shots as just before I got on the boat my shutter button fell off, and is now sitting at the bottom of the sea somewhere. I ended up having to shove the end of my keyring into the camera to take these shots.

Corral and gardens at Pipe Spring looking NE from the front of "Windsor Castle." Happy Fence Friday!

Pipe Spring was named by the 1858 Mormon missionary expedition to the Hopi mesas led by Jacob Hamblin. In the 1860s Mormon pioneers from St. George, Utah, led by James M. Whitmore brought cattle to the area, and a large cattle ranching operation was established. In 1866 the Apache, Navajo and Paiute tribes of the region joined the Utes for the Black Hawk War, and, after they raided Pipe Spring, a protective fort was constructed by 1872 over the main spring. The following year the fort and ranch was purchased by Brigham Young for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church). The LDS Bishop of nearby Grafton, Utah, Anson Perry Winsor, was hired to operate the ranch and maintain the fort, soon called Winsor Castle. This isolated outpost served as a way station for people traveling across the Arizona Strip, that part of Arizona separated from the rest of the state by the Grand Canyon. It also served as a refuge for polygamist wives during the 1880s and 1890s. The LDS Church lost ownership of the property through penalties involved in the federal Edmunds-Tucker Act of 1887. -- Courtesy Wikipedia

Today the complex is open to the public and the visitors center is operated as a partnership between the the U.S Government and the Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians. The entire area seen in this image is on the tribal lands of the Paiute Indians.

A very special species for me. One of my earliest memories in wildlife photography was stalking these guys around the very same location, Ormiston Gorge, up the cliffs, right on sunrise. To return some seven years later and yield shots like these (after those early ones REALLY didn't age well) was extremely special. They were even more beautiful than I ever remembered them being. Just spectacular animals in a spectacular setting.

This guy seems to choose to go by camel at all times! Even though there where plenty of jeeps available at this particular place. "Not without my camel", right! This photo is taken in the Jordan desert in the area Wadi Rum. (Notice the distinct colour of the sand)

Graffiti from the 1960s pirate radio days is still just about visible on this tower above the top floor windows. It used to read "RADIO 390 6.30 - MIDNIGHT". Radio 390 went off the air for good in 1967. I had hoped we would also have seen the Radio City graffiti on the Shivering Sands Forts: unfortunately, the Paddle Steamer Waverley did not take us there on this occasion, as it did when I was last aboard in October 2015. I'm hoping the MV Balmoral will sail there in 2018, as my previous booking in June 2017 had to be cancelled.

As much as the Navajo are a part of the Antelope canyon so are the hoards of people who visit, rather than experience, the slot canyon. Fortunately the guides try to shuttle the tourists through the narrow canyons so not to disturb photographers who are taking long exposures. I took this photo knowing a tour group would walk right into my shot, but I wanted to show the relationship between the slot canyon and the many tourists that visit it. A 20 second exposure turn them into 'ghosts.'

======================================

In the last 20 years Antelope Canyon has rivaled the Grand Canyon National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park as a “must see destination” on a grand tour of the Southwest. For photographers it is a stunning visual paradise on earth. Besides the incredible light and remarkable colors of the Navajo sandstone, Antelope Canyon easily accommodates photographers due to the fact that there is no hiking involved to get to the entrance, the actual slot canyon is very short (about 200 yards in length), the best light is from mid-morning to noon (so no waking up early to catch the sunrise), and since all tours are guided you are given invaluable tips on the best places to position your camera.

What is known as Antelope Canyon is actually part of the Antelope Canyon Navajo Tribal Park located right outside of Page, Arizona (located in Northwest Arizona near the Utah border). The tribal park consists of two regions: Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon. Upper Antelope Canyon (Tse Bighanilini’) is by far the more popular of the two as a result of its easy access and spectacular light beams that has made this slot canyon famous.

The best time to visit Upper Antelope Canyon is between April to October when the trademark light beams illuminate the slot canyon. I visited in the month of December knowing well I wouldn’t have the spectacular light but the tradeoff was I wasn’t going to deal with the maddening crowds that have characterized Antelope Canyon the last couple of years. Besides after a couple of intense days photographing nearby Monument Valley, I wanted to experience the slot canyon with my own eyes rather from behind the camera.

Enjoy the photograph and the accompanying travelogue! I would love to hear from you so please leave a comment.

Happy Travels!

The Maunsell Forts are towers built in the Thames (and Mersey) estuaries during the Second World War to help defend the United Kingdom. They were operated as army and navy forts, and named for their designer, Guy Maunsell. The forts were decommissioned during the late 1950s and later used for other activities including pirate radio broadcasting.

There are seven towers in the Red Sands group at the mouth of the Thames Estuary. The towers had been connected by metal grate walk-ways. In 1959 consideration was given to refloating the Red Sands Fort and bringing the towers ashore but the costs were prohibitive.

During the early 21st century, in response to proposals to demolish the fort, a group named Project Redsands was formed to try to preserve it. It was the only fort that could be visited safely from a platform in between the legs of one of the towers. The fort was inspected by the structural engineering company Structural Repairs in 2021. They found that 6 of the towers had severe structural defects, with elements already lost to the sea, the 7th tower also had the same defects, with elements due to imminently fall into the sea. The fort could not be accessed safely in its present condition.

Questo tramonto e' stato diverso, lo ho osservato guardando ad est e non ad ovest... le montagne ad est si sono accese di un rosso vivo mentre il sole tramontava ad ovest senza colorare il cielo..

This sunset it's been different, i kept looking east and not west... the mountains on the east side got coloured of a bright red while the sun on the west side was setting without colours in the sky...

Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park is located on the Navajo Nation, one of the largest American Indian tribes in the USA. This red-sand desert region on the Arizona-Utah border is known for steeply sloped Mittens buttes. The park is frequently a filming location for Western movies. Print Size 13x19 inches.

Jordan/2019 (The Wadi Rum desert valley also known as the Valley of the Moon, is located at 1600 meters above sea level in a mountainous region formed by granite and sandstone. It is the longest wadi in Jordan. The name rum means "high" or "high" in the Aramaic language, and its pronunciation denotes the nearby Arab influence. The highest point of Uadi Rum is Mount Jabal Umm ad Dami, with 1854 meters above sea level.

Wadi Rum has been inhabited since prehistoric times by various cultures, including the Nabataeans, who have left their mark on the petroglyphs. Since 2007, the desert inhabits several Bedouin tribes.

Wadi Rum is known by the British army officer T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), who used it as a base of operations during the Arab Rebellion of 1917-1918. In the Eighties, one of the most spectacular rock formations of Wadi Rum was named The Seven Pillars of Wisdom in honor of the book of the same name by Lawrence, although it has nothing to do with it...)

Time for a change of scenery and decor.

This picture of a sea lion (with 2 marine iguanas in the background, which are found only in the Galapagos) was taken in 2007 while visiting the island of Bartolome, in the Galapagos.

At the time I was using a Canon PowerShot A95.

I'm sorry if I have not visited your photostream recently. I am very busy this week.
