A TRADITION ALMOST AS OLD

AS HOBOING ITSELF

The first Hobo convention in Britt, Iowa was held in 1900. Newspaper reports said that young men who were not themselves hobos came to the convention in costume – and some of the real hobos found it embarrassing.

Ragged, patched clothing; big, floppy shoes; cheap cigars; a funny hat; and three days' growth of beard are all part of the look. Add a bindle on a stick, and it looks like the freedom to roam far away from everyday cares and restraints.

The same impulse is behind "redneck" events and Hallowee'en and New Year's Eve celebrations.

There just wasn't room in our fridge for a twenty-pound turkey, but it was 30 degrees or less from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day. So the bird went in a 5-gallon bucket, I packed it with ice and ice packs, and onto the balcony it went.
