So excited to see coyote pups at Maybury State Park on Sunday April 22nd. I first thought they were fox kits - but the people at the park helped me out with the identification. We were told that five pups were out of their nest between markers 5 and 6 on the paved bike path. I was told by another visitor that there were kits on the path. Me and another visitor went looking - but we did not find them on Friday. Independently, we both returned on Sunday and we saw them. I only saw three of them - the other visitor saw all five. They were living in a drain pipe under the trail. I was in Livonia with Pam for the GAW Convention (its Barbie). I visited Maybury State Park in Northville, Michigan three times: Thursday April 19th, Friday April 20th and Sunday April 22nd - all beautiful Spring days in Michigan.

I have posted a lot of fox images over the past three years. I try to only post groups shots, action shots or excellent poses. This Red Fox kit was just walking along in normal fashion but he is irresistible enough that I thought I would post him anyway. He was a small “ball of fire” most of the time.

I'm still going through the photos I took a few weeks ago, and this one caught my eye. I really liked the expression on mom's face as her little one was playing around, and I think the split tone treatment gives a little bit of that "a mother's love" feeling.

Taken with a Nikon D7000 and Nikkor AF-S 600mm F/4G ED VR telephoto lens.

The two danced around during their day larger

From last year in January when the foxes mated and I posted a 9 shot sequence from the day. Since then I have only added two more photos to the sequence, and now here are two more that fill in some gaps.

This shot details the day with the first 9 shots all posted on that image's page. And here's the Slideshow of all 13 images posted so far.

Neither participant was physically harmed during this encounter, though the fox seemed rather dejected in the end. Hedgehogs have a unique way to deter anything from getting too close, they curl up in a ball, hiding their face, and while in that position their quills are ready to prick anything that gets too close and in this case making the fox jump away.

We thought we had one fox in the neighborhood, but there is two. Maybe soon there will be 3?

These red fox pups were an extremely active bunch for several days in the vicinity of their prairie den. And I had the good fortune of several opportunities for catching them in groups of 2 or 3 at a time. Usually I had the most success with them on late spring afternoons.

Portrait of the one the red foxes enjoying the afternoon sun. They were very playful this afternoon and it was so cool to be this close to these cute and adorable foxes.

I spent hours watching and photographing a group of 6 red foxes. My patience was rewarded when these two siblings emerged from their den and began grooming each other tenderly. It was a lovely sight to see, and I was fortunate to capture it on camera. This image captures the close bond between red fox siblings. They are grooming each other to remove parasites and keep their fur clean. This behavior is also a way for them to show affection and strengthen their bond. Red foxes are social animals and live in packs of up to 12 individuals. The members of the pack take care of each other, including the young. This image is a reminder of the importance of family and community.

Sometimes models don't co-operate, and the only shot you get....well..

I spent a few minutes photographing this fox with an injured eye on the side of the road, and was shocked by how brazen he was. I saw him in the woods across the road, and as soon as I pulled over, he came running over and sat down just outside my car window, licking his chops, like a dog waiting for a treat… probably because he’s gotten some in the past. I honked my horn to scare him off, which sent him running back into the woods, but then he came back to the road and repeated the exact same routine every time another car pulled over. At one point he even laid down in the middle of the road, as if he was performing a trick for the tourists. They were obviously delighted to see that, but it just made me sad. A fox this food-habituated, and fearless of humans and cars, is not long for this world.

Just another reminder of why we must never feed wildlife—a fed animal is a dead animal.

Some odd sounds and sparring by the urban Foxes in our garden overnight, all with a Hedgehog trying to eat in peace and a feral cat attempting to get involved in the fracas near the end. Some of the vocalisations are very odd to say the least lol

For the first time today in the daylight two of the little foxes showed up, it was rainy and nasty out but I think the photos aren't too bad.

I hope everyone isn't getting sick of seeing the little fox babies!!!! I am loving watching them!

I took the day off today to take photos, to break free myself a bit...

This and the previous photo show what I think are the two kits that droopy eared mom had last year. They were in the same location that I'd seen them before with mom, but mom wasn't with them today.

I found droopy ear around the corner from the one year old foxes marking her territory and she headed back in to the woods. I'd seen droopy ear earlier in the year (a week or two ago) and she was in the same area and did the same thing (marked, sniffed, and left back in to the woods). I was really hoping to see her mating again this year, like I had last year... but I didn't. It was 367 days ago that they mated and I was playing the calendar to try to repeat the experience. From what I saw of her behavior today, I think she might still be on the prowl for Mr. Right. And as for last year's Mr. Right I don't think I've seen him this year, unless the scar on his nose healed and then I'd not have a mark to use to identify him.

The other day I was listening to this podcast (Ted.com) and a list of what I guess were the speaker's criteria for success struck me, since I think they apply to my photography efforts:

1) Learn from everyone!

2) Follow no one!

3) Watch for patterns!

4) ...and work like hell!
