(Photo by Aitor Bouzo)

There are now 11 very cute fox cubs in care at Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Trust, where I volunteer at weekends. They are full of fun, and so cute. They will all be reared, and released when ready. For more information on all of the patients in care, see the diary page, and/or you can follow Hessilhead on facebook.

Two red foxes in yard, remained in the same general location for nearly an hour... fighting, sleeping, hunting. Oblivious to high power lights.

In this segment, the 35-watt HID handheld spotlight was used outside, about 350' from the foxes, rear of residence. They ignored me, occasionally looking toward the light (the HID color temp made their eyes glow a bright yellow... like two powerful LEDs). The camera didn't pick this up.

I took the day off today to take photos, to break free myself a bit...

This and the next photo show what I think are the two kits that droopy eared mom had last year. They were in the same location that I'd seen them before with mom, but mom wasn't with them today.

I found droopy ear around the corner from the one year old foxes marking her territory and she headed back in to the woods. I'd seen droopy ear earlier in the year (a week or two ago) and she was in the same area and did the same thing (marked, sniffed, and left back in to the woods). I was really hoping to see her mating again this year, like I had last year... but I didn't. It was 367 days ago that they mated and I was playing the calendar to try to repeat the experience. From what I saw of her behavior today, I think she might still be on the prowl for Mr. Right. And as for last year's Mr. Right I don't think I've seen him this year, unless the scar on his nose healed and then I'd not have a mark to use to identify him.

The other day I was listening to this podcast (Ted.com) and a list of what I guess were the speaker's criteria for success struck me, since I think they apply to my photography efforts:

1) Learn from everyone!

2) Follow no one!

3) Watch for patterns!

4) ...and work like hell!

The reason the camera was wiped out: a handheld 35-watt HID spotlight was aimed from inside the house through a window and storm window – windows reflected back to the camera, obliterating a good segment. The beginning and end are clear.

From now on, no high power HID spotlight will be used, because they overload the camera. This is from over 350' away, front of residence. Temp was 12° F. No wind.

Our Hedgehog has become quite the industrious worker as it fills its den with hay for the upcoming winter hibernation. At least that is what we hope he/she is doing. This 18min video takes place over approximately 4.5hrs but we removed all but the interesting bits and sped up some parts to reduce the overall size of this video.

This young fox's magnificent bushy tail is attracting some interest from a follower. Is this little bumble-bee confusing a foxglove with a fox's brush!

I am a Kent artist and enjoy watching my pets and other beasties, and try to capture their antics in paint.

A friendly fellow, for a fox.

Red Fox mother and pup at den taken in Eden Prairie, MN in the wild

As promised, here's a photo of the little rascals playing outside their den. Mom wasn't too far away, keeping an eye out, but it's always a blast watching them have fun.

It was getting close to sunset when this fox came walking through the snow to cross the road I was on. It was the closest I have ever been to a fox in the wild.
