The local recycling dump is mighty popular on a Sunday. All those cars, all those engines, queuing away...

We talk so much about "the problems of the environment", and yet despite all the discussion and press -- it feels like so much like posturing. The UW has a lot of recycling programs on the books, but go to a Husky game and check out the ratio of recycle cans vs trash cans...

That is indeed a recycled plastic grocery bag. I had fair luck last year growing tomatoes in milk crates lined with cardboard. This year I zip-tied a couple bags into each crate- they are dark colored, sturdy, and porous- all good things for growing tomatoes. The volume of each bag is just a touch more than the half cubic foot of soil the Square Foot Gardening book says is perfect for one plant.

Yesterdays pilgrimage to the local scrapyard. There's a grim fascination about a scenic drive through these mountains of "stuff". Staggering to think what the global accumulation of similar scrap metal must be when this yard in a small Ontario city contains this collection. Scrap arriving and departing all the time we were there unloading. The circular economy - sustainable?
Recycled paper chandelier made for a Woodend Artists ACE funded event in Aug 08. The artist ran workshops with local youth groups to make the origami cubes. These were then grouped into colour and suspended by fishing wire from a central frame.

I think it is good that we have recycling bins because then all the plastic don't end up lying around the place.

For the last 4 years me and the wife have become very diligent about recycling everything we can. We don't have a curbside service, but the place we grocery shop has these huge dumpsters available for people to throw their stuff in. Since we are cleaning up the condo to get it ready to sell, we have come across a number of things that we need to recycle. We made a trip yesterday so we could just get the crap out of our house.
This is the part of the dumpster that the hooks from the actual truck go into so it can lift the dumpster off the ground and flip it into the bin. I really like all the colors going on in here.

...or the underbelly of a big city...
For years Istanbul has been a city that recycles - not because it is mandated by the government, but because a segment of the society lives on the sorting and selling of everyone else's throw aways. There are unofficial centers all over town where goods collected by the roving junk men (hurdacı) are brought, sorted, weighed, and moved/sold. The 'facility' shown in these 6 photographs is in an old flour mill which burned many, many years ago. Within its shell seven days a week groups labor to turn the city's trash into a living.
used two pullovers from the thrift store as my fabric... used Burdastyle "Liz" pattern as the base and modified it. also made the skirt with a simple elastic waist (but it's not my favorite) 10.22.08

I immediately saw this poster in my mind's eye.
A couple of months ago I disposed of all the cassette tapes I had recorded. Mainly C90s with an album on each side they filled a recycling wheelie bin. Decluttering the attic I found the books I used to hand write all the album tracklistings. Definitely, the end of an era...although I still have a database of all the album titles.
I found these in a garbage can that was about to be collected... these are slightly damaged, but something told me to pick them up. These look a lot like an older version of my current new recycling bins. These are made by Piper Casepro in Dallas, TX.
