The locomotive model was inspired by a 1999 version of the Bi-polar electric locomotive built by user legosteveb. I recreated the actual orange, red and black color scheme used on the loco when it emerged from the 1953 modernization program, but it was too expensive. So, after looking around I decided to use the paint scheme the Milwaukee Road used when the engine was donated. This yellow and red scheme was inspired by the Union Pacific and was adopted very late in the engine's career (mid-50's to it's retirement in 1961). The engine pictured is E2, which is the only Bi-polar left in existence as the rest were scrapped. (It's in St. Louis at the Museum of Transportation)
The passenger train, and the rear car in particular, were inspired by the Milwaukee Road's Olympian Hiawatha service from Tacoma, Washington to with the rearmost car being a Beaver Tail observation car, which were out of service by 1961. So the window of use for this train's real world counterpart is very narrow: 1955 - 1961 is the outer limit of these two elements being used together. (Actually, I'm not sure the Beaver-tails were ever used all the way to the West Coast on the Olympian.)
Oh, and the engine has 14 axles, just like the real loco. I'm not sure my articulation attempts in all the boogies and the frame were enough to work on standard LEGO track, but I guess I'll just have to see when it's built in real bricks latter this year!
Its amazing what can be created from the base of plastic bottles with a little imagination .

For Halloween, I created a tribute to the 3 classic Universal Studios monsters: Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman... by recreating their posters, LEGO style.
All three posters also appear in Episode 42 of my LEGO-brick based webcomic, Zombie Outbrick.

The green textile looks like a twill, probably made of wool. In burials such as this one, cloth sometimes survives where it touches metal, because the chemicals the metal produces as it oxidizes prevent the growth of bacteria that would destroy the fabric. That is how textile archaeologists can identify the weave used to make the fabric.
I do not know how they came up with the color. I would think the fibers would be so heavily impregnated with metallic residues that the dye's chemical signature would have been obliterated.

Week 12 - Recreate a Painting
Recreation of Getting Out of Bed by Berthe Morisot.
1885-86. Impressionism. Oil on canvas.
My oh my, it's Monday and I'm posting what I should have posted yesterday. I guess i needed that extra day and the three hours crying session over deciding what paint i would eventually recreate.
Painting is something very close to me, a passion of sorts, from painting myself to some sort of adoration for the masters of painting i have learn about through the years when studying - and loving - History of Art. Both paintings and painters are something that I can fangirl about like crazy, so when this week's theme popped up i went on a frenzy because picking up just one work from one master painter was, in my own view, an impossible task.
I put Caravaggio aside, as much as i love him i tend to dwell in the safety i feel working around him, his amazing use of light and darkness and his moody tones. Then i knew i couldn't go with Artemesia Gentileschi either, after all she's pretty much the female equivalent of the first. Also, in my first years of college i worked a whole lot around John William Waterhouse, even doing a re-creation of the so famous Ophelia, so there i was with another out of my list.
That was when i came to realise two things. First i would turn into Impressionism, another one of my great loves, and secondly i wanted to portray and re-create a painting of a female artist, portraying a woman in the painting. That's when i remembered the lovely Berthe Morisot, those soft tones, the depiction of such natural, calm moments of her life and the life of other women.
Berthe was recognised, still in life, by her works, exhibiting them side by side with masters such as Manet, Cézanne, Degas, Monet and even Renoir. That is something, that as a woman myself, I aspire to, to be recognised during life, to have my work sided with those of other men and women and be an equal in what i do compared to all of them.
I could have gone in a million different direction with this theme, i could have done Renaissance, Baroque, Raphaelite, Surrealism, but in the end Impressionism won and i guess now that i look at this it feels as right as it could ever be. I am happy, truly happy with this one.

Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺?, lit. "Temple of the Golden Pavilion"), officially named Rokuon-ji (鹿苑寺?, lit. "Deer Garden Temple"), is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. The garden complex is an excellent example of Muromachi period garden design. The Muromachi period is considered to be a classical age of Japanese garden design. The correlation between buildings and its settings were greatly emphasized during this period. It was a way to integrate the structure within the landscape in an artistic way. The garden designs were characterized by a reduction in scale, a more central purpose, and a distinct setting.A minimalistic approach was brought to the garden design, by recreating larger landscapes in a smaller scale around a structure.

Main Street USA
Main Street, U.S.A. is the first "themed land" inside the main entrance of the many 'Disneyland'-style parks operated or licensed by The Walt Disney Company around the world.
Each Main Street, U.S.A. (except Tokyo Disneyland and Shanghai Disney Resort) has a train station above the entrance. At Disneyland Park and Hong Kong Disneyland, Sleeping Beauty Castle stands in the distance beyond the end of the street. At the Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland, Cinderella Castle stands at the end. At Disneyland Paris, Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant stands at the end.
The area closest to the entrance, usually just past the train station, is called Town Square. At the far end of main street, around and in front of the castle is called, The Hub or Central Plaza.
Town Square is home to City Hall, in which the Guest Relations office is located. Further along Main Street, the names painted in the windows on Main Street serve as credits for some of the many people, Imagineers and others, who contributed in some way to the creation of Disneyland.
Inspired by Walt Disney's hometown of Marceline, Missouri (as in the film Lady and the Tramp), Main Street, U.S.A. is designed to resemble the center of an idealized turn-of-the-20th-century (c. 1910) American town. According to Harper Goff, who worked on Main Street, U.S.A. with Walt, he showed Walt some photos of his childhood home of Fort Collins, Colorado. Walt liked the look, and so many of the features of the town were incorporated into Main Street, U.S.A. Another significant source of inspiration for the Main Street, U.S.A. concept came from the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village, which Walt Disney visited twice in the 1940s.
Walt Disney said, "For those of us who remember the carefree time it recreates, Main Street will bring back happy memories. For younger visitors, it is an adventure in turning back the calendar to the days of their grandfather's youth."

One of the 2015 Lego 'Speed Champions' theme recreations. Set 75908 'Ferrari 458 GT2'.
Guess what? Not excited by stickers, they do not progress the art of Lego building.
The set has been recreated in Lego miniland scale for Flickr LUGNuts' 84th Build Challenge, - "LUGNuts Turns 7…or 49 in Dog Years", - celebrating 7 year of the LUGNuts group on Flickr. You can build pretty much anything, as the birthday challenges offer all the previous build challenges as the design guide for the models. In this case Challenge 54 - "Lego Set Overhaulin", - where the theme challenges the builder to recreate an official Lego set.
I know that they aren't out yet, but I reckon "Speed Champions" would be a whole lot cooler if they were 'miniland' scale or included 'Model Team' type models. Just sayin....

My attempt to recreate the Wegmans Tractor & Trailer Building Blocks Set by First Gear wasn't successful as three types of pieces aren't available in Reddish Brown (yet), but I was able to build this rendition in White. It was only after I was well along in building the final modules inspired by the Safeway Store at 3526 King Street in Alexandria, Virginia, that its applicability as a companion piece occurred to me. The large stickers on the trailer are covering five wall panels each. [IMG_0876]
Recreating an old MOC I never took pictures of the original, though thankfully a couple do exist, thanks to my Dad. I was not pleased with the original one (This was also like, 15 years ago now) but looking back at the couple images I do have, I really liked it. The original also holds a soft spot in my mind, as I had a fun game playing with it. It's most notable attribute was that it looked great crashed. 124 studs long. 133 if you count the antennas.
This MOC took probably a year and a half to build. Long stretches of nothing, with brief spurts of building. Thought to be fair, I did have a move and got married in that time...

Arguably the most important of England's cathedrals and its Mother Church, few other buildings embody the nation's history as much as this one. It also bears the distinction of being the first major example of Gothic architecture in Britain, where French masons introduced the style during the rebuilding of the choir following a major fire in the 1170s. Throughout the following centuries it became one of Europe's leading centres of pilgrimage, when thousands flocked to venerate the shrine of murdered archbishop St Thomas Becket, but brought to an abrupt end with the English Reformation, when a saint who defied a monarch was viewed with particular enmity. Though all traces of the rich shrine were destroyed, the site of Becket's martyrdom in the north transept remains a place of reverence to this day.
The cathedral is a stunning building which represents both the earliest and latest styles of English Gothic architecture, from the French inspired eastern limb and apse, to the nave, transepts and the three towers, all soaring examples of the Perpendicular style, the central tower (the 'Bell Harry') being an especially fine structure (the north-west tower was rebuilt in the 1830s as a copy of its medieval neighbour on the south side following the demolition of an earlier Norman tower, thus the present symmetry of the west façade is a relatively recent feature, originally its mismatched towers would have given it a more Continental appearance).
The earliest parts of the cathedral however are Norman, represented the easternmost chapels and transepts flanking the choir, survivors of the fire of 1174, each transept being adorned by a richly decorated miniature tower. The crypt below is the finest in the country, extending below most of the east end (with a transitional early Gothic extension to the east under the apse). Superb examples of Romanesque art can be seen in many of the crypt's sculpted capitals, and the unusually well preserved murals in St Gabriel's chapel (sadly photography is forbidden in these areas).
The cathedral contains many notable tombs and monuments of all periods from the 13th to 20th centuries, foremost amongst them being the tombs of Edward the Black Prince (with a superb bronze effigy) and King Henry IV.
It's most celebrated feature is its wonderful collection of stained glass, much of it dating back to the late 12th and early 13th centuries including a sequence of the Ancestors of Christ and the especially beautiful 'Miracle windows' in the ambulatory (relating various miracles associated with Becket's shrine). The glass is justly famous as the very finest in Britain, its deep blues and reds often compared with the famous windows of Chartres.
On the north side many of the former monastic buildings remain, with a fine late medieval cloister and a vast rectangular chapter house. The cathedral library also stands here, but was rebuilt after being destroyed by bombing in World War II; fortunately all the medieval glass in the cathedral had been removed for safe-keeping throughout the war and damage to the building was otherwise superficial.
Canterbury Cathedral put simply invites superlatives, one of the most rewarding churches anywhere and a magnificent testament to England's Christian heritage.

The Davies Alpine House was designed to recreate the dry, cool, windy conditions alpines need to thrive, without using energy-intensive air conditioning and wind pumps.
Conceived as two back-to-back arches, the structure creates a stack effect that draws warm air out of the building. Below ground, air is cooled in a concrete labyrinth and recirculated around the perimeter, while the low-iron glass exterior allows 90% of light to pass through.
Formally opened in 2006, the Davies Alpine House is a RIBA award-winning structure that combines traditional practice with the latest technology – a glasshouse for the 21st century.
