Aspen clad in their loveliest autumn raiment glow in the Wheeler Geologic Area of the La Garita wilderness, framed by hundreds of dead trees.
As noted in my previous post, the forest in the La Garita mountains of southern Colorado were hit hard by spruce beetles following the late 1990s. By 2010 nearly 90% of the mature Engelmann spruce had been killed. This kind of devastation leads to bleak talk about bleak views of dead trees, but one needs to take longer views both backwards and forwards in time to put this outbreak into context.
Major forest beetle kills have occurred in the past, though a good case can be made that this one is unprecedented in size due to climate change. Forests have recovered from these past beetle outbreaks, with regrowth occurring over 100s of years, creating landscape mosaics that are beneficial for wildlife and for altering the progression of wildfires. (BTW, beetle kills do NOT increase the likelihood of fires- green trees under drought conditions burn equally well if not better than dead trees).
There are clear signs of recovery from this recent beetle outbreak. Aspen stands are spreading into areas formerly dominated by spruce, and there are young spruce growing beneath the canopy of dead trees. This recovery will take a long time (in the context of a human lifetime), but the forest will recover, though it will be different than before, due to natural ecological processes and ongoing climate change.

*** Our garden has started its own rebirth process : The Hamamelis are in bloom, and the first lovely Crocuses have started blooming.. Almost all the bulbous plants let their lovely “noses” appear on the early Springtime earth…The sunshine helps the lovely Crocus blooms to unveil their purple Beauty and those adorable, curly, golden stamens, so much loved by the bees!!
When the crocus comes out, you know that spring is finally here. I'm fortunate to live next door to a conservation area where I can still walk a little during this lockdown and photograph nature.
