The birds sensed that this guy was a threat!
This is definitely a first for me and one of the reasons why I find the bayou so very interesting! You just never know what you are going to find roaming around on the shores. I went to the bayou this past Monday and the water hyacinth problem did seem as bad and so made my way to the Great Blue Heron nest. Saw very little activity and so moved on toward Horsepen Bayou while the tides were still quite low. There were numerous birds foraging in the areas that were exposed at low tide and I was trying to get close enough to them for a shot. I heard a lot of rustling off in the distance and much to my surprise I saw a pack of coyotes come out of the grass on up to the water’s edge. I sat motionless and they didn’t seem concerned by my presence. I fired away and eventually they retreated. I paddled a bit closer to their position and they re-appeared and were really eyeing the birds foraging along the water’s edge. The group of four retreated once again, but I heard some noise behind a clump of reeds and tried to see what it was. I was very fortunate to get the camera up and fire off one shot of this fleeing coyote before he made the cover of the grass. This is my first ever encounter with coyotes in the wild and it was quite the experience.

There is a reason for my recent Lego shots that are about the events on the snowy planet of Hoth. They were photographed for a book.
The book is small, only 38 pages, a hardcover with dustjacket. It consists of my photographs with little stories to them, all of which you can find in the Lego on Hoth set on my Flickr account. Many photos were re-processed from the original RAW-files for the book and the little stories were revised for consistency.
In the back cover of the book it says:
Here’s a thought: What if we did not know everything there is to know about what happened on the planet Hoth in Star Wars, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back? The rebel forces had their hidden base there for some time, what do we know of everyday life in and around the base before the evil Empire’s attack? What do we know of the events during and after the attack? Who were the people who did all the hard work? What if they were all made of Lego?
I did the layout last year, but did not send it for printing because I felt it was missing something. I could not figure it out at first, but then I realized that it was missing the weight of the mighty AT-AT. It played an important role in the events located on Hoth and the book seemed shallow without it. Once I shot those AT-AT shots and added them to the book it was ready for printing.
The first trial came from Blurb yesterday and it looked great. There are some minor issues to be resolved with the layout before ordering the final copies (poor cropping here and there and some work needs to be done with the gutter area, which was deeper than I had anticipated). There'll be three copies in English and maybe ten in Finnish, they will all be given away to the kid and his friends.
Maybe I'll keep one for myself. :D

I almost didn't make it here. There was no time on my initial schedule for a trip to Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre. But for whatever reason, I met this kiwi guy in Peru and chating about random things eventually we got to our itineraries and I mentioned that I'd be heading to Patagonia after the Inca Trail. I gave him information about the route I'd be doing, and I mentioned that I had 2 big priorities in Patagonia: 1-Complete the Torres Del Paine Circuit 2- See the Perito Moreno Glacier.
Having said that, he mentioned that his priority in Patagonia was Fitz Roy / Cerro Torre, and the next few words he said would become the trigger for a big and massive change on my initial plans. He said: "But, what a shame you are going to miss Fitz Roy" ... those words hit me baddly, and even not showing that I was felling a bit sad because of the idea of 'missing' these places, I just could not take my thoughts away from it.
Day after day, during the Inca Trail ... there was not a single day I didn't get myself wonddering, is there any way I can manage to go to Fitz Roy / Cerro Torre? I kind of knew the answer for it, but at that point I wasn't believing that it could be done, and trying hard to fight against my own thoughts eventually that issue went away for a while.
Once the Inca Trail was finished, on my way down to Patagonia, whilst on the plain I grabbed guides, maps and notes I had written months, weeks and even days before I set off to Peru. And started to re-do again my trip-plan for Torres Del Paine which was already audacious. By the time I got to Punta Arenas I had drawn a new plan which consisted of finishing the Torres Del Paine Circuit + Side Trips in nothing more than 5 days, 1 day less than the original plann.
With that extra day I would have the time I needed to go and see Fitz Roy / Cerro Torre. So I had to 'work hard' to stick to this new crazy schedule.
Something was making me believe that if nothing goes wrong i.e: get stucked on the John Garner Pass because of rough weather or whatever, I could do it. And all of the sudden just 5 days after having started one of the most amazing hikes on hearth I was again at the Hosteria Las Torres, where it all began.
From there, took the bus to Laguna Amarga and from there back to Puerto Natales, where the next day I would start my trip towards El Calafate in Argentina, and of course straight to El Chalten.
On the 6th of January at 5 in morning I started the last hike for this trip (Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre), where again I basically covered a 2 days hike in 1 (more or less 27kms). The path is very easy compared to what I faced in Torres Del Paine just a few days before. Not to mention I was just carrying my camera gear, all other stuff I had left behind at the hostel where I spent the night.
And this is the epic I went through to get to this place. I have to admit, I would have regret it so much if I haven't at least tried. Specially because I am so far from South America and I have no idea when I will be down there again.
Cerro Torre is one of the most spectacular mountains of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field in South America. It is located in a region which is disputed between Argentina and Chile, west of Cerro Chalten (also known as Fitz Roy). The peak is the highest in a four mountain chain: the other peaks are Torre Egger, Punta Herron, and Cerro Stanhardt.

For whatever reason, earlier in the day I was not in the mindset that I was going to stay up for the lunar eclipse. It was peaking at midnight and I was tired, and I have photographed lunar eclipses many times. But as it turned out, I was wired. I was wide awake. So I ventured out in search of a subject to frame up with the moon, because just the moon by itself is not so interesting. I had driven around earlier searching for a suitable palm tree to frame with the moon, something preferably on a hill so I could be far enough away to shoot at 400mm to get the moon as big as I could manage and also have some chance at getting the tree in focus as well. I couldn’t find anything that matched that criteria, so I settled on a local tall Mexican date palm that was isolated. Instead of the long end of the 100-400mm lens range, I ended up on the short end, at just 100mm. I tried many attempts at focus stacking, but none worked, and it was pretty much moot anyway as the trees were blowing around in the wind. But, I like how this turned out in the end. What do you think?

The main reason for my 14 hr round trip adventure to Pennsylvania was to visit Strasburg for the N&W "reunion of steam" celebrating the return of Strasburg's own N&W Class M 4-8-0 #475 (Baldwin 1906) along with a much yoinger, larger and more famous streamlined visitor! And while I got diverted to the R&N for some surprise bonus steam on Saturday I stuck to the plan on Sunday and was decidedly not disappointed! John Kittredge was an excellent guide and new exactly where to be based on the lighting throughout the day. We were graced with sun for the most part and despite the large crowds virtually everyone was polite and courteous as we all worked to get our shots.
I certainly took some classic Strasburg scenic vista shots, but I think some of my favorites were when I got behind the photo line and tried something creative. So while two dozen people shot the same image of this train working back west approaching the Esbenshade Rd crossing I figured I'd go for something unique. I wanted to capture the agrarian nature of this famous Lancaster County pike so go down low and tucked in alongside the high corn for this scene.

If it weren't for the individuals working hard to be inventing new technology each and every day to keep America moving safely, there would be no 50th anniversary for Amtrak such as what they're celebrating today. Those people have presented companies such as Amtrak with safety-focused systems, designs, and plans that are used to keep America moving. Building that safety-prioritized message that Amtrak presents to it's riders and customers, a Positive Train Control (PTC) test train was slated the evening before to be sent south on the Northeast Corridor.
PTC is a system designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments, incursions into established work zones, and movements of trains through switches left in the wrong position. Essentially, almost any form of human error is designed to be caught and prevented by the PTC system.
This train, Amtrak 863(22) was sent out of Boston to exercise the PTC system on the Northeast Corridor, particularly this morning from Southhampton Street Yard in Boston to New Haven, Connecticut. These trains are ran a few times a year to test the health, status, and integrity of the positive train control system of each testing block the crew is assigned.

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve --
St. Petersburg, Florida
We did not find many butterflies or dragonflies on this visit to the preserve. We were told by one of the preserve officials that they had sprayed for mosquitoes recently and that was the reason.
I guess there are pros and cons to everything. But, I was able to get a few good shots of this beauty!

A reason for the season. I will be taking a break from Flickr for the month of December to concentrate on my fabulous family and some other December responsibilities that I have. I look forward to a great 2015 of shared photographs and memories with all my Flickr friends. Happy Holidays and see you again next year!
Photographing this dandelion was almost therapeutic and when I was viewing each seed the way it is attached to the main head I see miracles.
I mean, do you see the little burrs and in which direction they are pointing ... Up.
This is why these suckers are so hard to pull out of the ground when you want to get rid of them. The seed has anchored itself, it grows big, you pull and it acts just like the wall plugs you put in the hole when you want a screw to stay there.
Amazing huh ... my keyboard is acting up, canèt get the apostrophe or question mark to type, instead I get this ... É of è. I donèt know what I did.
Anyway, when I saw this quote by the Dalai Lama it screamed to be applied here. What do you think É
Everything about leaving home, having home to come back to and wanting to stay ... sigh* Nature, the plan is already in motion. Beauty!

Season of Photogrpahic Eye - picture 4
Week 46, Saturday
I didn't pick up any camera for a long time after my experiments with a cheap analog camera and Velvia 50. After many years doing something else, I did get excited with some of my friends DSLR. We did some photography like HDR panoramas and I recognized, again, my potential inspiration for photography but even if it was fun it didn't really trigger my own pursue for photography. It wasn't lucid to me then, but now I see very clear: I didn't have any real reason to shoot nor did I have a 'real purpose' for my photography. Of course I could have bought the camera and go shoot sun sets for example. But for what reason?
Part of my disinterest regarding photography related to technical obstacles as well. I had been more or less disappointed with all the earlier cameras I had been using whether they were analog or digital. My (relatively little) experience with them has showed me how difficult it was to turn ideas and images in my mind into real photographs that actually looked like something. Photography with an analog camera felt like a wheel of fortune and what came out of it was very hard to control. And the early digital wasn't much better, because it seemed to me that there were never enough light and most of my images turned into noisy and congested digital files that had nothing to do with the original image I had in my mind (or eyes for that matter). Of course I knew that others could create great pictures with big DSLRs, flashes, external lights and what else. I was never interested to go into that direction. I just wanted to capture things how I saw them in the first place (yes, I know it was a pretty amateur presumption at the time).
Finally all that changed when our daughter Aura was born two and half years ago. Suddenly I felt something extraordinary was happening in my life and I realized that I need to capture it before it passes away. I took the first images, again, with a loaned camera (Panasonic LX-5, if I remember correctly) but soon realized that I finally need to buy my own camera. I didn't have much money and with a help of a friend I settled for Sony Nex-5N which I didn't know about. When I got the Sony Nex-5N I was actually surprised to see it was so different from all the other digital cameras I had tested before. It was tiny and had pretty modest setup options, but when it came to image quality it delivered. I was so excited and surprised to have a DSLR quality (and better) with such a small package. Together with Sony 50/1.8 the Sony Nex-5N felt very liberating because I could suddenly shoot in any circumstances and get usable pictures. And because it was so small, I could carry it everywhere with an ease. Now that finally I had a reason to shoot and I had a great camera to go with it, my inspiration and creativity boosted up high and I shot over 26 000 images in first year. Finally the photo bug had found me.

Walter Burley Griffin, in association with his wife Marion Mahoney, was the most remarkable and individualistic architect in Australia during his stay between 1913 and 1935. The Langi Flats are unusual in his oeuvre for displaying more of the style features of his earlier American projects, after leaving the office of Frank Lloyd Wright. Important features include the low horizontal eaves, the complex geometric decoration on the capitals of the front pylons, the decortive iron panels window spandrels and the matching gates on the north block.
The use of native trees (in this case lemon scented gums) in the front lawn displays Griffin's interest in Australian flora for suburban gardens. It is believed that Edna Walling later designed the north garden at the rear of the flats.
Aesthetically, the flats are attractive as a large, yet sensitively scaled building, with a horizontal, ground hugging emphasis, set behind sweeping lawns studded with a row of large native trees."

The reason to go to Bologna first was the Europe League match FC Bologna vs. SC Freiburg. Supporters of SC are singing „Wir fahren über die Alpen, nach Baku ans kaspische Meer, nach London über den Kanal, denn Freiburg spielt international!“ (Engl: We're going over the Alps, to Baku on the Caspian Sea, to London across the Channel, because Freiburg plays internationally!). So I drove via San Gottardo, not through the tunnel. The pic was taken on 30 Sept.

This is from a good little book that I picked up while on vacation. It's called "How to be interesting" by Jessica Hagy. Over 250 pages of venn diagrams, graphs, and simple a few words on how to be true to yourself and truly experience life. I bought it up to have discussions about things with the kids, but this one was too perfect not to share with Bruno as his gift to the world is more from his heart than his brain. And we're all more than fine with that.

An excursion ship cruises in front of the sharp peaks of the Antarctic peninsula. The dramatic peaks have an appearance very suggestive of the southern Andes range, and for good reason. They are in fact part of the Andes, which dives into the ocean below Tierra del Fuego, and then re-emerges on the Antarctic peninsula.
Antarctica is the coldest, driest, and highest continent in the world. It is twice the size of Australia and a third larger than Europe. It is covered with ice averaging a mile thick, and yet is officially a desert because it receives so little annual precipitation, less than an inch a year. The temperature has reached 129 degrees below zero, the coldest ever recorded naturally on earth. The average elevation of the continent is 7500 feet, and it's highest point is Vinson Massif, at 16,050 feet.
We arrived here on an overcast, cloudy day but fortunately had numerous breaks where the Antarctic coast emerged dramatically through the clouds.
I tried to map this, but I guess Flickr has never heard of Antarctica.
More trains!
This was built for a few reasons; I originally wanted to build a GER 0-6-0 that was in LNER livery, then an LNER J11 (or something like that), but the dart landed on me building a J15, but then while building it I realized that I actually rode the only surviving preserved J15 a year ago on the North Norfolk railway, I just didn't recognize her because she is currently in her GER livery. I wanted to build an LNER 0-6-0 tender loco because I wanted to get back into building bigger locomotives, choosing LNER because my Y7 is also LNER. Thankfully, I didn't have to order a single piece for this build, resulting in me being able to build it so quickly. It is powered by a single train motor, but it only has one rubber band currently; but I intend to get some more for the front two blind drivers (without them it isn't a very strong locomotive). Currently, this is my first british locomotive powered through the locomotive instead of having a booster car behind it. More projects on the list, and tomorrow I will print decals for this engine and hopefully post them tomorrow!

The 17th century French polymath, Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), is famous for several reasons. Taught by his father, he was a child prodigy who excelled in mathematics and the science of his day.
Amazingly enough, whilst still in his teens, he developed ideas about calculating machines and over three years produced 50 prototypes. He is rightly considered one of the fathers of mechanical calculators and his findings contributed eventually to the rise of modern computers. In fact one of the early computer programming languages was named after him: Pascal.
His major scientific discoveries, however, related to chemistry, particularly the study of fluids and the clarification of theories about gases under pressure and the vacuum. I can recall first learning about him in high school Chemistry - a Pascal is now a unit of pressure.
His major contributions to mathematics began when he was just 16, both in geometry and probability theory. In fact this latter theory led him to his primary reason for choosing to believe in God (though let me add, this is NOT why he believed in God - more of that in the next picture).
Pascal's Wager is another term that has entered our lexicon. In it Pascal argues that one must stake one's own life on the outcome of a coin toss.
Suppose the following (and I'll use terms current with the theology of his age):
You believe in God AND
{God exists} = Eternal Happiness or Heaven
{God does not exist} = Nothing
You do not believe in God AND
{God exists} = Eternal Damnation or Hell
{God does not exist} = Nothing
Now leaving aside the debate about Hell (in which most people in Pascal's age believed), you can see the conclusion. By staking your life on the fact that God exists you cannot lose the bet. And more than this, you have lived a virtuous life (supposing that you are true to the principles of your faith).
But this rational argument is not why Blaise Pascal believed in God. He also said, "The heart has its reasons which reason cannot tell." So to the next picture...

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One, to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other, to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days, staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow, a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left, I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left, how many times did I depend too much on her, doubt her, envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However, I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me, a guy filled with ambiguous, unstable
tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.
Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

というタイトルが並んでいて、お時間がない方には、この締めに当たる『東京大学で学ぶ価値』だけでも読んで欲しい。
すばらしいです。
さすが、としかいいようがない祝辞です。
このラストパートで僕がもっとも惹かれたのは、もっともラストのテキストにあたるこの部分。
『 … 大学で学ぶ価値とは、すでにある知を身につけることではなく、これまで誰も見たことのない知を生み出すための知を身に付けることだと、わたしは確信しています。知を生み出す知を、メタ知識といいます。そのメタ知識を学生に身につけてもらうことこそが、大学の使命です。ようこそ、東京大学へ。』
このお話を読んで、さらに動画を拝見して確信したことは、僕が触れてきたアーティスト。
たとえば、ビートルズ、マイルスデイヴィス、ピカソ、芥川龍之介、モーツァルト。
こういった革新的な作品を発表し続けてきたアーティストらは、既存のアートを吸収し、再構成して、提出しています。
ここでいう『すでにある知から新たな知を生み出す。それをメタ知識という』
僕が好きなアーティストらが発表してきた革新的な作品群は、この『メタ知識』にあたります。
革新的な作品は、人の目を覚まし、震わせ、息を吹き込みます。
東京大学生に限らず、与えられた場所で自分の知のベストを尽くすことが、多くの人への貢献になります。
たとえばiPS細胞はそのベストな例だと僕は思っています。
なので、自分の知に溺れ、保身になるのではなく、知を晒して多くの人たちへ尽くしてください。
多くの人への貢献は、なかなか難しいかもしれません。
ならば、あなたの身近な人、たったひとりの人だけでも、ベストを尽くしてください。
僕は、若手のみなさんに心から期待しています。
人って、やれないことってないと僕は思っています。
まずは、なにかをやってみてください。

Martin Luther was not the only one to have wonderful dreams. Sadly only mine has really come true and one of the reasons why I so love being Jojo is it is a bit anti-establishment and especially so witnessing the sad way Britain is going backwards stripping out what still made us great as in 'cool'. Let's not get political but when I see what we are doing to our planet and there are so many bad things going on in the world why shouldn't I not be able to live life my own way if it is doing nobody any harm. Yes I used to dream but I am a sensible person and just thought it was an impossible dream and no better than a daydream. I was a bit lost as Christopher and I put all my talent into my art and photography but in the end it just highlighted my frustration, stupid as it may seem I wanted to be sexy and exciting not just a man with his hands in his pockets. I became confused and something had to give I suppose and I worship the day I decided as an experiment to create partly as an artistic exercise an alter-ego and just go with it. When I started taking herbs to maybe fool my male-female hormonal balance I never really believed they would do much at all and they didn't for a long time but a little was better than nothing but it was fun as it kept the breast dream alive. But obviously they were always working going right through my body toning and shaping and maybe it was a bit of desire and will-power that pushed me along even further and just look at me now I am almost there. I haven't worn them for years but I think the time will come some when pretty well all my remaining male clothes can go. Indeed the only male clothes I will be taking off will be my lovers for I've noticed recently the transitional process has taken me a stage further and I've even started to believe I am a trans woman. Now I've written all that I can go and have my Weetabix and you guessed it herbs.
