The Senior Common Room at Reading University Whiteknights campus is the remains of the mansion that the campus was the grounds of.

It is a common design feature to emphasise the symmetry of a design by making sure there is an item in the centre; on the line of symmetry. In this case, that's the middle window on the first floor.

The thing is, to suit the internal layout of the building, behind that window is a wall. There's not even any glass, it's just stonework painted black. I don't want to think about how many students have been through this uni and never noticed that.
