Our second annual Summer Reading Soiree celebrated the love of both reading and art. The evening featured Christina Baker Kline, New York Times bestselling author of “The Orphan Train,” who discussed and signed copies of her latest novel, “A Piece of the World.” The book is a fictionalized memoir of the woman in the famed Andrew Wyeth painting “Christina’s World.”

Attendees had a chance to stroll the exhibits at the Arts Council while enjoying sparkling beverages provided by Cool Vines, delicious appetizers from Princeton Soup and Sandwich Co., delightful desserts from Ritzy Bakes, fresh fruit from Tico's Eatery and handmade sorbet from the bent spoon. The first 50 attendees received a limited edition wooden bookmark and all who attended were able enter a raffle to win some great prizes donated by local merchants.

The event was held at the Paul Robeson Center and co-sponsored by the library, Labyrinth Books and The Arts Council of Princeton.

Reading Abbey was founded int 1121 by King Henry Beauclerc (Henry I), and grew to become one of the foremost monastic institutions in Western Europe, bringing pilgrims and prosperity to the town. All this ended dramatically in 1539 when the Abbey was closed down by King Henry VIII during The Reformation.

Most of the Abbey buildings were torn down in subsequent years, although the core walls survive to this day and give an impression of how big and imposing the Abbey once stood. The ruins have been out of bounds for a number of years for safety reasons, but following remedial work they were once again made accessible to the public in 2018. In conjunction with the reopening, a number of information boards highlighting other aspects of Reading's history have been erected around the town centre.

This finely bedded gritty clay is the top of the Reading Formation (formerly Reading Beds). It's wet because water seeps down through the soft sand above it but can't penetrate the clay, so it all runs out at the boundary. The liverwort is some Pellia species identifiable only by female parts: the whole colony seems to be male.
