Looking back on turbulence, we see patterns in the traces that it leaves, and imagine a kind of logic, or let's tell it like it is, a history with some element of inevitability. Of course we are wrong, and the grunts in Vietnam were correct: shit happens.
This applies equally to our human story - at any scale - and to patterns in the sand.

c1910 postcard view looking west toward the intersection of Main and Calhoun Streets. The Allen County Court House is on the left. Just to the right of the court house in this view are signs for a loan company and the Rurode Dry Goods Co. Across the street is the Hamilton National Bank where the clock says it's about 10:00. There's a Centlivre advertising sign on top of the red building on the northeast corner of the intersection. Next door is The Model Clothing and Shoe House. Above that building can be seen a sign for the Bradley Brothers Drug Store which, according to a 1910 directory, was located at 627 Calhoun Street.

Filmed historical recollection of the arrival of the Venetian Judges in Cologra Veneta.
In 1406 the Doge of Venice miche Steno decreed that Cologna was aggregated to the Sestriere Dorsoduro of Venice, to stop the bloodish wars among the local Lordships.
Cologna remained faithfull to venetians until the fall of the Serenissima (1797)

Nel 1406 il doge di Venezia Michele Steno decretò l'aggregazione di Cologna al Sestriere Dorsoduro di Venezia, per porre fine alle sanguinose contese tra le Signorie locali. Cologna rimase veneziana fino alla caduta della Serenissima (1797).
1908 postcard view looking north on Walnut Street in Ridgeville, Indiana. The brick building at the left in this view has a MORGAN sign hanging above the awning. The sign on the side of the building includes the word "shoes." According the RANDOLPH COUNTY postcard book (Arcadia Publishing), this building was located at Walnut and Second Streets.
A barber's pole stands on the sidewalk just up the street from the Morgan store. A short distance up the street is a sign for Boswell and Son Clothiers. The sign advertises men's and boys clothing.
Across the street from the Boswell store is a sign reading LIVERY. The sign also contains an arrow pointing to the east, presumably a cross street or alley. The other readable sign on the east side of the street is advertising a drug store. A purple martin house sits on a pole at the curb between the livery sign and the drug store.
