Eddie Vedder - βRiseβ

Such is the way of the world
You can never know
Just where to put all your faith
And how will it grow
Gonna rise up
Burning black holes in dark memories
Gonna rise up
Turning mistakes into gold
Such is the passage of time
Too fast to fold
And suddenly swallowed by signs
Low and behold
Gonna rise up
Find my direction magnetically
Gonna rise up
Throw down my ace in the hole
"Rise up, start fresh and see the bright opportunity in each new day."
Yesterday, I was on a walk with my brother and his wife and of course I had to take my camera with me. I just took a few quick shots since I didn't want them to wait for me for too long and this one turned out to look pretty nice. I hope you like it!

Shown here are three residential high-rise on the Rotterdam Boompjes. Shot from the Ibis bridge crossing the Scheepmakershaven. Over the past 15 years, this major Rotterdam thoroughfare has transformed - residential housing has made a comeback in the city centre, accompanied by, albeit small, balconies.
On the left: Terraced tower (OZ Architect, 2021), the high rises in the middle are 'Clubhouse Boompjes' (Team V Architectuur, 2025) and on the right is 'De Maas' office tower (Koldewijn-Drexhage, 1988).
The backstory about the return of residential housing in the city centre: In the 1980s, it became evident that the strictly functionalistic urban design of the post-World War II Rotterdam city centre no longer met the needs of its residents. In the first post-war decades, the redevelopment enhanced functionality, offering a clear break from the congestion and other development problems of the pre-war city centre. And its morphology offered the symbolism of a brave new world. However, due to the 60s and 70s social-economic boom and the rise of consumerism, the strict segregation of living, business and administration made the city's heart feel like a place that didn't seem to live and breathe. It was simply too high on business and too low on living and recreation. One of the programs to rectify this was the R'dam high-rise policy - the insertion of a series of high-density up-market apartment buildings in and near the city centre.
This is number 772 of Rotterdam architecture and 119 of Facades.

The high rises on display here are a direct consequence of Rotterdam's 'high rise policy'. What's that? In the 80s, it had become evident that the strictly functionalistic urban design of the city centre of post-2nd World War Rotterdam didn't cut it any more. In the first post-war decades, it did enhance functionality, offering a clear break from the congestion and other development problems of the pre-war city centre. And its morphology offered the symbolism of a brave new world. However, due to the post-war social-economic boom and the rise of consumerism, the strict segregation of living, business and administration made the city's heart feel like a place that didn't seem to live and breathe.
It was simply too high on business and too low on living and recreation. One program to rectify this was the R'dam high-rise policy, which involved the insertion of a series of high-density, up-market apartment buildings in and near the city centre.
The building in the middle is 'Terraced Tower' (OZ Architects, 2021), a mid- to high-rent residential tower.
On the right and behind it are the highrises of the Wijnhaveneilend with the 'Red Apple'. On the left is the Clubhouse Boompjes (under construction, Team V architects).
The Β΄AlenaΒ΄Rhine cruise boat at the bottom of the frame offered a nice counterpoint to all this unbridled verticalism. ;-) To the right of its bow is the (of course, yellow) finish of the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes.
This is number 746 of Rotterdam Architecture.
I love it when the sun disappears behind clouds, especially when rays radiate out through the gaps. It mirrors the radiating rock runnels on the beach. Rise and Shine is by The Felice Brothers. I'm off to Cowbridge today to discuss my possible exhibition next year, so that should be fun. Then there'll be a panic to produce more material etc.
Many ripples of beautiful blue
Flowing wide in front of you
Watch them rise, fall and break
On the surface of the lake
That is blue just like the skies
Stretching out before your eyes
I'm hurting all over. The last training session was quite taxing and I feel like I went twelve rounds with Mike Tyson. As of this morning, I'm up early and recuperating for tonight's wrestling meet-up. For now, I'll be needing some ice. Lots of it.

It's been fun watching this old house twist and lean over the years. It finally fell over at some point. Below is my very first photo of this place:

Its been a year tomorrow since I took this photo and fell in love....and its really kinda cool to see the progress we've made toward reaching our goal of living here in the Berkshires!!

What in the world is wrong with the world?
If you've seen my photos you know how much I cherish every part of our wonderful planet. Nature gives us everything and asks for nothing in return.
It's humans who created a price. As if they owned the earth. They have taken, hoarded, killed for, locked up, stolen, depleted, poisoned, destroyed and consumed anything and everything.
Political leaders are trying to propel us into a new abyss. How many times do we have to say "never again?"
That said, the current groundswell movement, by the people, for the protection of the people and the planet gives me hope.
This ice bubble picture seems so symbolic for our planet; its beauty, fragility, complexity, part science/part miracle, floating through space in all its wonder.
Time to Rise Up.
Long exposure night shot of mountain, old bridge and gate (across river Neckar) in Heidelberg, Germany
I have been wanting to photograph a sunrise at Charlestown for some time, this involves an early start and going over to the south coast of Cornwall.
I needed a 04:45 alarm call yet my old steam driven alarm clock is a bit unreliable shall we say, so what could be my back up plan, of course my trusty companions Hoof & Horace who between them could wake me at the appropriate time.
So plan in place, sure to form there was a heck of a rumpus outside in our driveway at said time. When I peered through the curtains there in the drive with mischief written all over their faces were my intrepid menagerie.
I was most impressed they were able to rise so early, I asked the dynamic duo how they were able to achieve this, easy they said we have just got home from a bender at one of our mates parties, so we are just off to bed. I guessed correctly that they would not be accompanying me to Charlestown.
Hope you all have a lovely week, get the snow tyres at the readyβοΈ
