"Carrickarede is undoubtedly one of Northern Ireland’s most spectacular geological sites, and can only be accessed from the mainland by journeying across an exhilarating ropebridge with a 30m drop over a 20m wide chasm!
The island cliffs at Carrickarede, Co. Antrim were part of a volcanic vent 60 million years ago that lay waste to the surrounding landscape. At that time, the ancient continent of Laurasia was ripping apart and the resulting rifting led to volcanic activity on a massive scale. At the very start of the rifting, molten magma began to ascend through the crust resulting in explosive volcanic activity. The consequence was a volcanic blast that heaved over a million tons of lava, volcanic ash, pulverised chalk and Lias clay into the air in a massive column that towered over the vent. Blocks of semi-solidified lava fell as volcanic bombs into the chaotic debris and drifts of ash were constantly peppered by blocks of basalt and chalk. The cliffs at Carrickarede show a section through the main vent and its choking fill of angular rocks that blasted free in the initial phase of activity. It is thought that the volcanic vent at Carrickarede is just one of many that lie undetected below the lava field of the Antrim plateau. Carrickarede is unique in Ireland and shows in cross section, the violent process of the earliest phase of activity in the this part the Palaeoegene period." From Kirstin Lemon

The Battle of Belleau Wood (1 June 1918 – 26 June 1918) occurred during the German 1918 Spring Offensive in World War I, near the Marne River in France. The battle was fought between the U.S. Second (under the command of Major General Omar Bundy) and Third Divisions and an assortment of German units including elements from the 237th, 10th, 197th, 87th, and 28th Divisions.[2]
