how many stories have been told in this place

a gallery of other peoples shots of the same view as we are rather herded via the viewing platform into the same place and this is an obvious shot from that place...

Beautiful blue mountain ridges fading toward the approaching sunset. At the Las Vegas NM National Wildlife Refuge.

Fences on the south side of the National Elk Refuge as seen from Nelson Knoll.

One of the refuges from Piatra Craiului ridge. The refuge is situated near "Ascutit Peak" (2150m)

Bonneval sur Arc, Haute Maurienne Vanoise

Images from a sunset at both Lake Illawarra and Barrack Point on the same afternoon.... the heat and humifity at the lake was quite oppressive and that storm cell heading north east was just too interesting not to head over to the ocean to see the show.

Another shot from sunset at Honaunau.

BTW, the dark area is pahoehoe lava along the shore.

Vaseux Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary is located 5 kilometres south of Okanagan falls in the picturesque Okanagan Valley of southern British Columbia. Covering Vaseux Lake as well as some of the surrounding land, the sanctuary is adjacent, and in some areas overlapping, with the Vaseux-Bighorn National Wildlife Area. These two protected areas are unique in Canada as many of the species present within them are at the most northern extreme of their range.

One of my favourite ever campsites a few weeks ago on the German/Czech border. Huge natural cave, misty morning forest, what more could I ask for?!

Off camera flash in the tent, triggered remotely with a cheap ebay release.

Happy Beetle Monday - this colorful little one is seeking a little camouflage

I spotted this snail moving at droplet speed toward an opening to an underground irrigation control box. There it will wait until sunset or when the nearby field is watered at night to reemerge. That's how a snail survives in Southern California during a drought.

Taken on a hike in the Savoie region of the French Alps on a trail called the Tour of the Vanoise. This part of it is also part of the longer GR5 trail which runs from Nice to Lake Geneva (and farther).

As I said in an earlier posting, the European hiking refuges are generally staffed with friendly people and you can have a bed for the night (usually in a dorm), a hot shower, a wholesome dinner, wine/beer/whatever, breakfast and they'll pack a lunch for you for 40-60 Euros per person. Mostly run by the local Alpine clubs but many are private. They are very friendly places too since the other guests arrived there like you did, on foot, and you all have something in common.

You will probably never ever stay in a place so beautifully located as some of these Alpine refuges.

The work shows sandbanks constantly transformed by the combined action of tidal currents, waves and winds. Different populations of birds occupy these ephemeral and evocative islands which emerge temporarily before being swallowed up again.

L’œuvre montre des bancs de sable constamment transformés par l’action combinée des courants de marées, des vagues et des vents. Différentes population d’oiseaux occupent ces îles éphémères et évocatrices qui émergent temporairement avant d’être englouties à nouveau.

Desert National Wildlife Refuge, Nevada

In February my wife and I visited two wildlife refuges after exploring Death Valley. If you would like more details and photos about our trip, check out my post Water Gives Life in the Nevada Desert on my blog Batteredsuitcase.net
