As part of the Delta Works, the estuary, the Brouwershaven hole, was closed off from the sea by the Grevelingendam (1965) and the Brouwersdam (1971). After the closure, Lake Grevelingen became the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe. Initially, the intention was to turn it into a freshwater lake by inlet of Rhine water, but by the 1970s it was so polluted that it was abandoned.
Lake Grevelingen is mainly used as a place for water sports and other recreation. In addition, some fishing remains. Since 1978, the salinity of Lake Grevelingen has been maintained by the Brouwers Lock, a ford lock in the Brouwers Dam, through which seawater is admitted.
