The Vachel Lindsay Memorial Bridge joins East and West Lake Drives at Recreation Point on Lake Springfield. The Bridge was built in 1933 and 1934 to simulate a multiple arch bridge. The structure is really a series of cantilevers with heavy counter weighted abutments. There are eleven spans which total 1,394 feet in length. The Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company of Kansas City, Missouri made the original engineering studies, designed the major structures and acted as the consultant throughout the entire construction period. This bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Nicholas Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931), for whom the bridge is named, was an American poet. A native of Springfield, Illinois, he is considered a founder of modern singing poetry, as he referred to it, in which verses are meant to be sung or chanted.

Remember the popular 1980 video game Pac-Man? As I approached the rim of this scenic overlook, the small pine tree immediately reminded me of the iconic Pac-Man. I had to stop and take a photo before I even got closer to the edge to get the real ‘money-shot’ looking down into the canyon. Photographed at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area in Utah.

Afternoon view from Needles Overlook, Canyon Rims Recreation Area. The scene looks toward the north, with partially sunlit Island in the Sky on the left, and a bit of the Colorado River in the valley. A clearing winter storm conceals the La Sal Mountains above the cliffs in the right center.

Not many panoramic views are left like this where there's little impact of human development on the landscape.

Victorian Bandstand/Sun Shelter on Dun Laoghaire East Pier, Dublin, Ireland

The Victorian Bandstand/shelter was first constructed in 1890 and has recently undergone extensive renovations.

Dun Laoghaire Pier is a popular place for walking, jogging and recreation.

Amistad is what is known as top-sail schooner, or a Baltimore Clipper – a recreation of what historians believe to be the best representation of what La Amistad would have looked like on the outside in 1839.

Also called the El Dorado Recreation Area or Lakeview Commons.
