It's a little after 5 am on this Monday, August 25th,2025, we see Inter County Railway ( ICR ) conductor/brakeman/Maintenance Jose Arrey climbing back on board locomotive 259, an EMD GP38-2, after grabbing some paperwork from Train Master/dispatcher Cody Sanchez.
Jose and Veteran ICR Engineer Tom Jayle are heading up the “ Mine branch “ to Hazzard Range Sand and Gravel Zeolite Mine with a load of empties, they will swap out for loaded ones, then return to Sparta yard.
ICR has trackage rights on BNSF tracks here that they also share with the New Mexico Rail Runner Express
, but the mine is on 25 miles of ICR's own tracks that were once part of the Sparta Creekdale and Philipsburg Railroad that ran about 100 miles from Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe ( now BNSF ) Junction in Sparta ( Hazzard Range county seat ) to Philipsburg ( county seat of Clay county ). It operated from 1888 to 1960, hauling freight, ore, and passengers. A lot of the tracks were removed by the mid-1970s, but in 2002, ICR rebuilt part of the line to the Zeolite mine, though ICR owns the whole 100-mile right of way. Now called the Mine branch, it also serves the Hazzard Range Sand and Gravel main pit and the West Mesa Industry park spur, High Desert Plastic, Hazzard Range recycling, and Fox's Lumber and Hardware are located there
Engineer Tom Jayle has been with ICR since 1993, when it ran its first train. He worked for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe for 6 years before that
Jose is married to Michelle Arrey, who was a County Sheriff’s Office deputy till a car accident in 2012 left her permanently disabled. He was a mechanic at Bobo's Fuel and Garage and White Towing from 2000 to 2013, when it closed. He was hired by the railway shortly after. Both our Hazzard Range County natives.

2002-2005 Dodge Ram 1500 or 2500 4x4 Quadcab. This pickup can transport prisoners it has a cage inside. You would think to save money the CA State Parks would be buying base model work trucks not SLT's but pickups from this era costed less than they do now and the SLT trim probably didn't add much to the price since they bought a bunch of these trucks at once.
Without being too unkind I do wonder why Matchbox bother making this a licensed Ram casting due to its overall crudeness. A tiny bit of modifications could have given it "generic" status and thus save a little bit of money on fees. Almost sub Maisto in its execution this latest MBX Off Road five vehicle set recolour certainly does it no favours! Mint and boxed.
