During our trip, the staff were always painting parts of the ship, it seems there was a quick visit to my cabin at an earlier time

A warm and sunny Sunday, so we went to Richmond Beach Park and happened to find a particularly high high tide. The waves were washing various bits of driftwood and flotsam around. The beach (more rocky than sandy) is littered with driftwood, but the waves usually don't come high enough to start moving them around much. Even this high tide was only doing a bit of flotsam arranging. Puget Sound was pretty calm and the waves small, and the really big driftwood logs on the upper beach would take a major storm to move around. Still it was cool to see this high tide -- an interesting contrast with the low low tides I've happened upon recently. I ought to look up and print out tide information so I know when the more extreme tides will be happening.

I just checked the tide info online and it looks like we were at the beach at the peak of the high tide, which was +11 feet. I'm not exactly sure what the average high tide is around here, but I think it is quite a bit less than that. (later note: I tried to find out if this was an unusually high tide or not, but got lost in tidal terminology and differing datums -- mean high water MHW, mean high high water MHHW, mean low water MLW, mean low low water MLLW, mean this, mean that. It appears, I think, that this high tide was not unusually high for a "high high tide" (which occur about once a day when the moon is right). Also, I thought +11 feet seemed like a lot, but I assumed it meant +11 from "sea level", but apparently they measure from "mean low low water", which explains why the tide tables almost always give positive values for both high and low tide.)

Being a nice weekend afternoon, there were lots of people at the beach here. I watched a group of three young teen kids dare each other to go into the water. Two of them did wade in and do quick dives underwater before running out and shrieking about how cold it was as if they were in great pain. Then they would dare each other again and do back in for another reluctant-but-playful soaking and another shrieking run back to towels and a little fire they had going. The temperature of Puget Sound's coastal water is currently about 47 F (8 C).

The cheetah, laying down, started twitching its tail. That was the cue that it was about to make a move. I was fully prepared, looking at it through my lens, ready to fire. Then it moved so suddenly that by the time I could take the first shot, it was halfway up, and it was fully up and walking in less than one second from a totally laying down position!

This is the 3rd in a sequence of four shot were all taken in less than 1 second. Maybe about 0.8 seconds. The 5DSR has a 5 fps frame rate, and all these four images have the same time stamp. Looking at the last photo, it is impossible to say it was laying down flat less than a second previously!

And that was just routine, everyday "getting up", not for starting a hunt or anything. It is really amazing how quick a cheetah is, and yet, its movements are so elegant and graceful, without any jerkiness or awkwardity about them.

Having come into temporary possession of a Sigma 120-400, I thought I'd do a quick comparison against my lens of choice, the Tele Vue TV60. This is by no means a scientific test - I wasn't really far enough away from from the target (a calendar) for one thing - so I wouldn't use this to make any statements about the finer qualities of either lens, but a couple of things are obvious when inspecting the full-size version:

1) The RPF-2804 field flattener (which wasn't specifically designed for the TV60) makes a big improvement to the TV60's edge-of-field performance.

2) When shooting wide open at 400mm, the Sigma produces a very soft image. The performance at f6.3 (not shown here) is much closer to the sharpness at f7.1 than it is to f5.6, with gradual improvements at each stop up to a peak at around f9.0.

All images were taken with a Canon 40D DSLR in Av (Aperture-Priority) mode at ISO 640, with mirror lock-up on and using Live View at 10x to focus manually. Both lenses were mounted on a tripod and the Sigma's OS was turned off. The photos were converted directly from RAW and cropped in PS, with no additional post-processing. Centre crops are on the left; corner crops (top right of the frame) are on the right.

SEPULVEDA BASIN - The Los Angeles Fire Department responded by ground and air to make quick work of a Sepulveda Basin wildfire south of Lake Balboa and north o the L.A. River on August 26, 2021. A series of precise helicopter water drops held the fire's advance, as ground crews with hose lines and hand tools, aided by an LAFD bulldozer, fully contained the fire to less than an acre in one-half hour. Though homeless encampments exist in the area, there were no injuries. The specific cause of the fire is under investigation.
