Monument classified as World Heritage by UNESCO

Built in the XIV/XV century to commemorate the victory of the 6.000 men of the Portuguese army, against the 32.000 Spanish soldiers in one of their many invasion attempts, the Monastery of Batalha is the most glorious example of the Gothic architecture in Portugal.

The story tells that in the 1383-1385 crisis, when the Spanish army with their king was marching to Lisbon to claim the throne they encountered a small Portuguese army. Laughing of such small force they've decided to pass around because they didn't want to be delayed in their conquest. The Portuguese seeing that the only chance to keep the independence was to fight and win, started to insult the Spanish calling them cowards. It had its result as the Spanish decided to turn back to teach the Portuguese a lesson...

Right from the start the battle was a catastrophe to the Spanish. When their cavalry charged, the knights started to fall into the many traps built in the battle camp. Those who escaped reached the Portuguese army in a disordered formation and tried to pull back. But while some were trying to get back, large numbers of Spanish knights not understanding what was happening continued to charge and push all in their front against the Portuguese spears! More, the Portuguese army chose a very narrow space to fight and the long spears of the Spanish knights were not maneuverable, so they started to break them in half to make them shorter. The problem was that when the broken piece was thrown to the ground the horses tripped in them and fell...

Soon it became a catastrophe to the Spanish and their king was forced run to Spain barely escaping the Portuguese persecuting force. This victory kept Portugal safe for the next 200 years...

She was posing so nicely for me.

Poor Flickr Uploadr. It just can’t help itself. It’s hinky as hell.

Fortunately, Flickr is so good at crafting a friendly user experience, they even get me to feel warm fuzzies about them when their app barfs.

Some of y’all might think it’s too precious by half. But it made me feel good, even though I couldn’t accomplish my goal. And that’s not nothing.

‘course, I’d rather that my pics uploaded. Flickr, fix that buggy OS X Uploadr. Pretty please?

Question: Are #Demodex mites the same as head lice?

Answer: No, mites are different to head #lice. Mites are parasites that live inside hair follicles and feed off of the oils they produce. Lice are larger, and can be seen by the naked eye. They live on top of the human scalp, and feed exclusively on blood.

I've had several questions about my sculpts being fully or partially 3D rendered. My work is still hand sculpted. I use a two-part epoxy called FIXIT Sculpt by Aves.

I do plan on getting a 3D printer in the future and will use it to assist in my diorama/ship building work but I will continue to hand sculpt much of my figures. I may render a head sculpt or something similar down the road but I need to get used to the software as well as the hardware.

Image below are of my recent sculpts showing what I begin with (a frame) and the finished sculpt.

These two girls were full of questions for the blacksmith.

this cute kid caught in Central Park, NYC running after this drone made me think about the constant crave typical of new generations for technologies and discoveries.

Question: My characters have powers, why would they have weapons? MOST of my characters have powers or magic but not all.

WALL OF TEXT!

My main character usage of a sword was inspired by He-man but the other characters weapon usage was inspired by The Thundercats. Another reason why my characters use weapons is because of the Superhero TOYS of the '70s/'80s.

Those toys had characters with accessories (swords, guns, hammers, Power rings..etc..). Which I want for my aspiring toys but those items would have a purpose in my aspiring comic's story.

Continuing the idea from "The rise of battle" and "The growing conflict" photos.

My M.C.'s Galaxy Star Defenders had the more advanced 35th Century appearance version of 80's MOTU's Castle Grayskull-like battle base. This base had dimensional portals that allow the base to be entered and exit by its residents & their allies anywhere the satellites had visited.

"The Fortress Force" assisted my M.C. William's desires in an attempt to save my future M.A Victor from Ahmaigord. Victor would visit the base several times until he turned evil.

After leaving Earth, both my M.C. and M.A would find "base planets" for their species to begin the fight for their species' homeworlds in the middle of story 2 of my aspiring comic.

Thousand years or more had passed after a borg-like enemy had invaded their home solar systems. My M.C.'s and M.A's enemy was occupying those systems and planted main bases on their species' MAIN homeworld. See Jagard's, Ztaro's and Ahmaigord's stories in their photos.

While my M.C. had access to the Earth's Battlebase, my M.A.'s

Zenith Astar Defiance did not. This is when the Angel of Vengeance represented by Wraffel introduces himself to Victor.

Thanks to the curse by the Savior and Slayer Blades, Vengeance was gaining power from my M.C.'s people's production of that chosen rare COSMIC DIVINE SPARK metal and any improvement to their blades.

Having the knowledge of how Saarwengs and the elders built the Fortress, Wraffel helps by providing the knowledge to Victor and his people's elders who were "lost" in making their own 35th Century appearance version of 80's MOTU's Castle Grayskull-like battle base and items/weapons.

Note: Both bases will NOT look like Castle Grayskull, I referred this iconic castle as an EXAMPLE!

By helping Victor, BOTH CHARACTERS were helping their GREATEST ENEMY. This idea was inspired by the idea I sent to Sega of America in the '90s for the game PhantasyStarIII - though some of those ideas were used in PSIV. After I signed their permission letter: www.flickr.com/photos/cliffather/5689279190/in/dateposted/

Why do photographers feel they have to Photoshop or edit the pictures until they’re unrecognizable?

This is a question that I used to ask myself, until I started to really understand photography and post processing. I used to think that photography was really easy, but then I became interested in sharing my work and followed many other photographers on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. A few years ago, Instagram hit the iPhone and at the time it was released, it instantly became the “had to have” app. You started to see more and more photos of food, dogs, cats, babies, anything and everything that could and would be photographed has been uploaded to Instagram. With all of these images, people feel that they need to find a way to stand out in the crowd, so they will use any tool available to them to create a one of a kind image.

Technology has helped in increasing the number photographers out there. Cameras are smaller, cheaper and can produce more megapixels than ever imagined a few years ago. Anyone can go purchase an inexpensive DSLR and start taking photos. Photos are cheap today. The only cost involved today is the cost of the memory card, the camera, and your time. You can purchase post processing tools like Photoshop, Lightroom or Aperture for cheap. This makes it easy for anyone to take an image and just make as many changes to it that they see fit. What works for them, may not always work for you.

HDR or High Dynamic Range is a form of post processing that has taken the photography world by storm. This is where photographers will take multiple shots of the same image at varying exposures and then merge them in post processing to achieve a more dynamic image with a great range in colors from light to dark. When done right, HDR will take an ordinary image into something more realistic. But when done wrong, HDR will ruin an image, you start seeing halos around items and things start to look very cartoon-y.

Below are two images of the same shot that I took of a pile of leaves a few years ago while on a hike. The first image is “as-is” from the camera. The leaves were shot with a proper exposure and they just came out of the camera looking a little dull. I know that while I was out on the hike the fall colors were really popping and there seemed to be a greater contrast in person than what I actually see in the image. This may be for another post, but a camera can only see the dynamic range of one “stop” per exposure. The human eye can see a dynamic range of up to 10-14 “stops”. This is why the fall colors aren’t as vibrant in your image compared to what you physically saw in person.

The second image is of the same pile of leaves. I had actually taken 5 shots (each at a different exposure ranging from -2 to + 2 and merged them together. This caused the dark areas to become darker and the light areas to become lighter. Thus creating the higher dynamic range of colors that you see here.

The Airpower Foundation was proud to partner with American Airlines, MGM Resorts International, The Gary Sinise Foundation, Terry Fator, Chef Robert Irvine, USO Metro, Greyhound, Sundance Helicopters, Still Serving Promos, Friends of Freedom, The Fremont St. Experience, and many additional partners and supporters to present Salute to the Troops 2017!

For the 9th year in a row, American Airlines donated a special 757 chartered aircraft to bring 140 wounded ill or injured service members and a guest to Las Vegas.

Activities included a heroes welcome at the Mirage which was our home for the weekend. From there our guests enjoyed the Secret Garden at the Mirage, the shark reef at Mandalay Bay, a private dinner with Gary Sinise at Bubba Gump Shrimp Factory, an amazing concert with Phil Vandel opening and then Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band on Fremont Street!

Sunday our nations heroes flew up and down the Las Vegas Strip thanks to Sundance Helicopters, and then enjoyed an amazing meal at Chef Robert Irvine's Public House Restaurant. Then master magician, Criss Angel, put on an amazing show at the Luxor for everyone. After the show, Criss spent some very special time with our warriors answering questions, and just having fun.

Wounded heroes also enjoyed a tour of Hover Dam, and a great Dinner at the Tournament of Kings at Excalibur. And of course our dear friend and supporter of all who serve, Terry Fator put on an amazing show for everyone!

The final day included a wonderful brunch at the Luxor before heading back on our donated American Airlines charter and the all volunteer flight crew who took such good care of everyone all weekend long!

A huge thank you to all those who volunteered their time and resources to make this weekend possible!

The Postcard

A postally unused Oilette Teddy Bear Series postcard that was published by Raphael Tuck & Sons, Art Publishers to Their Majesties the King and Queen.

The card, which has a divided back, was printed in Bavaria.

Raphael Tuck

Raphael Tuck and his wife started their photography business in 1866 in London. Their store sold pictures, greeting cards, and in time, postcards.

Their success came from the sale of postcards during the late 1890’s and early 1900’s. In the early 1900’s the firm conducted postcard competitions for collectors of Tuck postcards. These competitions offered cash prizes, and they were very popular.

The winner of one of these competitions had a collection consisting of over twenty-five thousand cards.

Three of Tuck’s four sons participated in the business. The company was devastated by German bombing during World War II. In 1959 the company merged with two other printing companies.
