As a blooming young nation, Saturn came up with its own comeback to the Gunship Question revealing the Trident Class. With six 37mm PDT's and an internal bridge the little "Spearhead" can go toe-to-toe with fighter craft, other Gunships and even Battleships if it so needs to.

Christmas at Mel's Diner 2

MAGAZINE

The year is 1957. It’s Christmas time again at Mel’s Diner and a big contest is happening but one little girl has the heart of Christmas in her soul and starts to question the things everyone else is focused on - like presents, fame and winning the contest. One little girl reminds everyone what the true meaning of Christmas is all about and Mel’s Diner will never be the same again.

It was good to be able to get away for a day. It was to be a comfortably warm day for late May, after a rather cold start. But where to go, a good question, and then the answer came…Long Island City. I had always been intrigued by the construction of Gantry State Park along the shore of the East River. The park centers on the old Long Island Rail Road’s massive float bridge operation that lasted into the late 1970’s. The former rail yards are now all gone, replaced by massive new apartment buildings stretching along the shore. Only elements of the float bridge towers remain, and they are the center point of the park. Also the famous Pepsi Cola sign that was once outside the Long Island City bottling plant, has been preserved and is now on its own structure along the shore. The once gritty East River Rail yards , factories, and warehouses are mostly gone, replaced by huge hi-rise apartment towers, for the Generation X, Millennial generations. The shoreline is now beautiful park land, and a most pleasant place to walk and view Manhattan, just across the river. Yet just a few block away parts of the old working class neighborhood of the original Long Island City remain, perhaps just barely, as the influx of the “new rich” take over and destroy history.

As you go through the photos, particularly of the LIRR Float Bridge operation some photos of my earlier excursion to the location in 1972 are included. The difference is rather dramatic.

New Mexico has an official state question - "Red or Green?". It's a question commonly heard at restaurants here, where waiters will ask customers "red or green?", meaning what kind of chile do they want with their burrito or enchilada. If you're undecided (maybe new to that restaurant or haven't tried their red yet), or you're just visiting and have no idea, you can order "Christmas" and get red and green.

So when you see a scene like this and you think "chile" you're either a New Mexican, you're on your way to becoming a New Mexican, or maybe you're just hungry.

Time for breakfast, maybe I'll have one of those green chile bagels...

An airplane left these weird signs on the sky...

On September 15, 1942, not far from the village of Semiluki, a simple Russian woman, Praskovya Ivanovna Shchegoleva, performed an unprecedented feat. At the cost of her life and the lives of her children, she saved the pilot of a downed Soviet Il-2 attack aircraft, Mikhail Maltsev, from death.

On September 15, Praskovya Shchegoleva, along with her young children, nephew, and elderly mother, were digging potatoes in their own garden in the village of Semiluki, occupied by the Nazis. Suddenly, a Soviet plane appeared over a hill on the outskirts of the village, sharply descending. And indeed, a few moments later, the plane caught the edge of the hill, slid on its belly, stopped right in Shchegoleva’s garden, and caught fire. Praskovya and her family quickly ran to the burning attack aircraft, threw earth on it and helped the pilot, who was slightly wounded, to get out. Shchegoleva immediately sent her children for men's civilian clothes, and she quickly explained to the pilot how to get out of the village. As soon as the pilot managed to hide at the house, the Nazis drove up in a car. Praskovya Ivanovna warned her family that she would answer all questions herself. Shchegoleva answered all the fascists' questions in monosyllables: "I don't know, I didn't see." Then the Germans beat her eldest 12-year-old son Sasha and locked him in a barn, threatening to burn him alive. This did not help. Then the Germans began to set shepherd dogs on the young children and Shchegoleva's old mother. This also had no effect. Then the brutalized fascists shot the children in front of their mother, and then killed her too. Praskovya Shchegoleva's four young children, the youngest of whom was 2 years old, her 5-year-old nephew and 72-year-old mother, perished together with her. Mikhail Tikhonovich Maltsev, a pilot of the 825th Assault Aviation Regiment of the 225th Aviation Division, who was saved by Shchegoleva, actually managed to get out of the village, but was unable to cross the Don. He decided to hide in one of the abandoned houses, and at night to get a boat and try his luck the next day, but was handed over to the Germans by one of the local residents who noticed him. Maltsev ended up in a concentration camp, but survived, returned home to Bashkiria in 1945, and was awarded the Medal "For Courage" and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. The following year he came to Semiluki to pay his respects at the grave of his savior. That same day, he identified one of the women working in the collective farm field as the man who had betrayed him to the Germans... For her feat, Praskovya Ivanovna Shchegoleva was posthumously awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st degree. The story "Praskovya" by Yevgeny Veltistov and the poems of Mikhail Isakovsky are dedicated to her.

Question: "what would you want to be your next big achievement?"

Answer:" retirement really isn't on my radar, and so when that does come, I would like to not just go home and sit on the couch with the dogs, but to still be an effective part of my community, even though I'm not working. I don't know what god has in store for me, I'm open to it. Whenever it comes to it , I'm happy."
