Circle Totem - Olivier Clausse

A suspended moment for gathering and sharing.

Circle Totem is a poetic, slow and narrative installation. The totem can be appreciated in its own right but also in a broader context. It is, in fact, a suspended moment conducive to gathering and sharing. This artistic proposal aims to re-establish links. First of all, the link with time, by inviting you to contemplate, stop and observe. But also the link with constant rediscovery through the play of lights, colours and intensities. The totems are animated independently and the pool of water at the base of each structure reflects the light and allows for multiple points of view.

Through his unique view of light, Olivier Clausse describes himself as a creative worker and scenographer who constantly sharpens his relationship with the object. Backed by twenty-six years of experience in the performing arts, cinema and crafts, he has forged his own personality. Together with the Afro-American choreographer Nora Chipaumire, he has established himself as an international lighting designer. His minimalist stage designs and raw lighting were praised in 2012 by the New York Times for the piece 'Miriam' performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Olivier Clausse has multiplied his projects in theatre and music, notably with the quadraphonic concert 'La Colonie de Vacances' and 8 years of tours across France.

Marshal Ney at the head of the French Cavalry.

This cyclorama was created in 1912 by artist Louis Dumoulin and is 360 feet long and 39 feet high. The display, now enhanced by quadraphonic sound, depicts the last battle of Napoleon Bonaparte. This defeat ended his rule as emperor of France. The panoramic painting is displayed in the original building erected for that purpose in 1912.

Set up of an audio recording, which was done early one morning in April 2010 in the middle of Scotland. You can hear the usual sounds of the countryside at this time of year and day.

The two front microphones were facing the river Tay, the two back ones Drummond Hill. All of them microphones were Audio Technica AT-3031 ones, connected to the RME quadmic preamp into an Edirol R-44 recorder.

So to get a quadraphonic or surround sound you have to download both tracks and alter them the way you want.

One of my Christmas gifts and the results are mind boggling. Even stereo records sound great reproduced by this SQ decoder and SQ encoded LPs never sounded better.

Highway One : Mystic Moods Orchestra LP album 1972.

During the early 1970s the record industry produced lp records in three quadraphonic formats . The above pictured record sleeve contained one of those products. Unfortunately the appreciation of quadraphonic product required the use of four matching loudspeakers, an expensive record deck, cartridge, amplifier, and decoder plus a suitable room in which to listen.

The Highway One lp though quite impressive in sound concept , was quite corny and softly

sensual - suggesting a stateside beach town holiday romance.

Before too long the quadraphonic lp disc fell out of favour.

The Azimuth Co-ordinator was the first panning control for a quadraphonic sound system. Pink Floyd became the first band to use it in their early shows.

The Azimuth Co-ordinator used four large rheostats housed in a large box, converted from 270 degrees rotation to 90 degrees. The system was operated by a joystick, which allowed an audio signal to be panned to one or more loudspeakers placed around the hall.

The Azimuth Co-ordinator was operated by keyboardist Richard Wright. It was constructed by a technical engineer: Bernard Speight, at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios. The original was stolen after the first concert in Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, England. A second was built for the concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London on 14 April 1969. It had two pan pots and four channels.

Lost for many years it has now been found under the aegis of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, displayed as part of their Theatre Collections gallery [1] since March 2009.

im sure i saw them use something like this at Rainbow Theatre , Finsbury Park in the 70s

Pink Floyd went for a four-night stand at the venue during the beginning of their Eclipsed Tour, on which its main set is mostly known as the "pre-Dark Side Of The Moon" set, from February 17 to 20, 1972. The last night performance was partially broadcast on BBC Radio. Besides the Eclipsed set, several songs from earlier tours were performed as encores.

Elvis purchased his first personal plane, a Convair 880, from Delta Air Lines for $250,000 (approximately $1.2 million today) in April 1975. The plane, named the ‘Lisa Marie’ after his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, underwent extensive refurbishment. The interior was customised with a lavish yellow, green, and gold theme, featuring gold-plated belt buckles, leather-topped tables, and suede sofas. Modern amenities included a sky-to-ground phone and a quadraphonic eight-track stereo system.

The Lisa Marie had separate areas, including a spacious master bedroom, a guest bedroom, a lounge area, a conference room, and two and a half baths with gold fixtures.

While sleek and modern inside, the exterior was painted white with a blue and red stripe running from the nose to the tail. The tail featured the US flag colors and an Elvis Presley logo with the acronym TCB (Taking Care of Business). Elvis affectionately referred to this plane as the ‘Flying Graceland’, drawing parallels to his famous home in Memphis.

Highlights from NPR (Neighborhood Public Radio) at MOCA's Engagment Party. "IN YOUR CAR" Day 2 of 3

www.moca.org/party/npr/

While MOCA generally encourages green transportation, NPR asks that visitors bring their cars to this event. FREE parking will be available in public lot 7; entry is accessible from Judge John Aiso Street.

In Your Car will feature two concurrent sound projects broadcasting on local frequencies, Park Park Revolution and Ping Modulation.

Park Park Revolution will be a composition “played” by cars parked in the lot surrounding the Geffen Contemporary. NPR will divide the Geffen lot into four sections, with each assigned to its own broadcast frequency. Directed into parking spaces, drivers will be instructed to tune in their radios and turn up their volumes to create a quadraphonic matrix of sound.

Under the canopy located at the Geffen entrance, Ping Modulation will pay homage to artist Robert Rauschenberg’s Open Score. For this project, NPR will outfit ping-pong tables with contact microphones and sound processors; as visitors match off in games of table tennis, the noise of their play will be fed to radio broadcasts that will transform their participation into sound art.
