Here is the joystick balance control on an early 1970's JVC 4ME-4800 4 channel 8 track player. According to JVC brochures, it puts out 48 watts, and has inputs for another discrete 4 channel source as well as 2 channel phono. It can play 2 and 4 channel tapes and includes JVC's "simulated four channel system", which converts a 2 channel input to 4 channel. It does not support matrix encoding such as CD-4 or SQ.
This was taken with the Lumix G5, an Olympus FL-36 flash with diffuser hood, and a Kiron 105mm 1:2.8 macro lens in Canon FD mount, set to f8.

"TORSO #1" is a sound sculpture that is visually reminiscent of a "Klopotec", a windmill-like scarecrow. Like the wings of a windmill, four 100V loudspeakers rotate and generate sound signals plus feedback in the room. Static microphones simultaneously transmit the movement of the sculpture via a quadraphonic PA system. The sound movements can be perceived both horizontally and vertically, creating a completely unorthodox listening experience. All sounds are specially designed for this unique system and maximize its psychoacoustic effect.

Let's say I am taking a step backwards with my Panasonic 4-Channel receiever and Sony SQ Decoder. These reproduce the sounds from my small section of Quadraphonic LPs in my collection. The sound is fantastic and worth waiting for, which may sound odd coming from a 33 year-old guy who should be into the new technology but hey, who said you can't be too young to experience yesterday's technology?
UPDATE: I no longer own this unit and SQ Decoder (this had no logic when it came to separation) and have moved on to hopefully something better. Maybe a Lafayette SQ-W or better. I still own my Quad albums, though.
