The Yellow-vented Bulbul, Pycnonotus goiavier, is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is resident breeder in southeast Asia from southern Thailand and Cambodia south to Borneo and the Philippines.

It is found in a wide variety of open habitats, but not deep forest. It is one of the most common birds in cultivated areas. They appear to be nomadic, roaming from place to place regularly.

The Yellow-vented Bulbul builds a well-camouflaged but fragile, loose, deep, cup-shaped nest from grass, leaves, roots, vine stems, and twigs. The nest is untidy on the outside, but it is neatly lined with plant fibers. it may be built in a wide range of places from low bushes to high trees. This is a species adapted to humans and may even nest in gardens. The Yellow-vented Bulbul lays 2-5 eggs in February to June.

The Yellow-vented Bulbuls eats berries and small fruits. They also sip nectar, nibble on young shoots, and take some insects.

Red-whiskered Bulbul, Pycnonotus jocosus, Campsie, NSW

One morning shortly after waking up (me, that is) I heard the bulbuls going off at the cats. Grabbed the camera, and got this guy about 3 metres from the back door. It's a plastic, but in the process of trying to get "one of everything" these things have to be posted.

The red-whiskered bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus) is a passerine bird found in Asia. It is a member of the bulbul family. It is a resident frugivore found mainly in tropical Asia. It has been introduced in many tropical areas of the world where populations have established themselves. It feeds on fruits and small insects and they conspicuously perch on trees and their calls are a loud three or four note call. They are very common in hill forests and urban gardens within its range.

The stripe-throated bulbul (Pycnonotus finlaysoni), or streak-throated bulbul, is a species of songbird in the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is found in south-eastern Asia. This photograph of a Black-crested Bulbul (Pycnonotus flaviventris) shows why I need a better camera body. This bird was photographed in the subdued lighting of Khao Yai National Park in Thailand. It was taken at 1/320 sec at 6.3 with ISO 800 using a hand-held 400 mm lens. I need a faster shutter speed for hand-held pictures, and less sensor noise at higher ISO settings. Nevertheless, I was delighted to see this bird, as I am a birder and not a photographer.

In the right situation, Bulbuls are a delight to hear as well as see. The word 'bulbul' comes from an old Persian word for 'nightingale', suggesting they have a beautiful call. indeed, most Bulbuls have a lovely song and many are used as caged pets, though some are not very musical.

This Bulbul has been given two different species names, being 'menanicterus' and 'flaviventris' ,with the latter (which means 'yellow bellied' if I recall my high school Latin) now being widely accepted. While most Black-created Bulbuls lack a red throat, the subspecies P. flaviventris johnsonii, found in eastern Thailand, is thus adorned.

As usual, comments, corrections and criticisms are appreciated.

Black-headed Bulbul (Pycnonotus atriceps atriceps), Phetchaburi, Thailand

The Black-headed Bulbul (Pycnonotus atriceps) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is found in forests in south-east Asia. It has a mainly olive-yellow plumage with a glossy bluish-black head. A grey morph where most of the olive-yellow is replaced by grey also exists. The Black-headed Bulbul resembles the Black-crested Bulbul, but has blue eyes (though not reliable in juveniles), a broad yellow tip to the tail, and never shows a crest.

The Black Eyed Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus) is a common bird in Southern Africa, but is one of my favorites as they are full of character. The Afrikaans name of "bottergat" meaning "butter bum" has to be more descriptive than the english version!

Cape Bulbul (Pycnonotus capensis)

I was at the Langebaan Gate to the West Coast National Park as it opened at 07.00. No wind so high hopes of some better birdwatching than the previous day. A trip down to the Seeberg Bird Hide provided some great sightings of both birds and wildlife. The car park was also full of birds as I set of down the broad walk to the hide. Unfortunately the tide was out and although the birds were there, they were a long way out. you need to plan your trips around tide times to get the best from this hide.

We'd obviously seen plenty of Red-whiskered Bulbuls though, pretty much finding them everywhere we went. They still remain one of my favourites though... I find that crest immensely attractive.
