白頭翁(學名:Pycnonotus sinensis)

zh.wikipedia.org/zh-hk/%e7%99%bd%e9%a0%ad%e7%bf%81

The common bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is a ubiquitous resident breeder throughout Africa. Other names include black-eyed bulbul and common garden bulbul.

The bill is fairly short and thin, with a slightly downcurving upper mandible. The bill, legs, and feet are black and the eye is dark brown with a dark eye-ring, which is not readily visible.

The dark-capped bulbul is mostly greyish-brown above and whitish-brown below, with a distinctive dark head and pointy crest on top of the head. The back of the head merges into the brown of the back, and the chin is also blackish. The underparts are grey-brown apart from white around the vent (yellow in P. b. tricolor). It is about 18 cm in length, with a long tail. It has a dark brown head and upper parts. Sexes are similar in plumage.

Order:Passeriformes

Family:Pycnonotidae

Genus:Pycnonotus

Species:P. flavescens

Binomial name

Pycnonotus flavescens

Brownish-yellow bulbul with a faint white eyebrow and a weakly tufted crest. Roams about in pairs or small groups, sometimes associating with other species. Prefers open forest and edge habitat over dense mature forests. Often found in scrubbier, less pristine habitats than other bulbuls in its range, though tends not to occur in cities as readily as Red-vented and Red-whiskered Bulbuls; a regular visitor of rural gardens and farm edges. Simple song consists of alternating sharp whistles, warbled notes, and buzzy gurgling. Also gives harsh low buzzing calls. Its name comes from flavescent, a yellowish colour. It is found in south-eastern Asia.

The black-headed bulbul (Pycnonotus atriceps) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is found in forests in south-east Asia. It has a mainly olive-yellow plumage with a glossy bluish-black head. A grey morph where most of the olive-yellow is replaced by grey also exists. The distinctive taxon from the Andamans has most of the head olive, and is increasingly treated as a separate species, the Andaman bulbul, (P. fuscoflavescens). The black-headed bulbul resembles the black-crested bulbul, but has blue eyes (though not reliable in juveniles), a broad yellow tip to the tail, and never shows a crest (however, some subspecies of the black-crested are also essentially crestless, but they have red or yellow throats). The black-headed bulbul mainly feeds on small fruit and berries, but will also take insects. It commonly occurs in small flocks, comprising 6-8 individuals.

This Flavescent Bulbul (Pycnonotus flavescens) was photographed in the mountains of Thailand's Kaeng Krachan National Park in January 2012.

The textbooks would tell you that the Flavescent Bulbul (Pycnonotus flavescens) is seen only at elevations above 900 metres (3000 feet), which makes it one of the less common bulbuls of south-east Asia. This one, however, didn’t read the textbook, as the GPS put it about 750 metres above sea level.

There are 130 bulbul species which inhabit Asia and Africa, with 35 being found in Thailand. Of the 19 I saw, this is perhaps the plainest. The word ‘flavescent’ means ‘yellowish’, from the word ‘flavum’ or ‘yellow’, if I correctly recall my high school latin. It is identified by a flavescent belly and yellowish-olive back, complemented by a grey head and a short, white supercilium. Like most bulbuls, it does perch in one spot long enough to get a reasonable photo.

Comments, corrections and criticisms are welcomed.

In the small trees nearby this lovely bulbul sang us a parting song.
