A dark, sleek, medium-sized bird with a black crest and a white rump. The red color under the tail is often difficult to see. Eats fruit, flower buds, and insects. Conspicuous and sometimes gregarious, often seen high in trees or perched on wires in urban and rural areas; generally prefers scrubby edge habitat instead of dense forest. Calls include a variety of chirps and whistles. Native to South and Southeast Asia. Introduced to several Polynesian Islands, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Polynesian Islands, including Hawaii.

生態與分佈 Ecology:
別名 Other Names： 黑短腳鵯、紅嘴烏秋、紅嘴筆仔(台語). 鵯(ㄅㄟ)
紅嘴黑鵯屬於台灣特有亞種鳥類，普遍分佈在中、低海拔的山區，活動的區域多半在森林中或山坡地附近，尤其喜歡停棲在高大的喬木或是枯樹頂層。每年到繁殖季時，有些還會遷移到低海拔山區或是平地，在樹上築巢哺育下一代。與白頭翁同屬鵯科鳥類，除嘴與腳為紅色外，全身黑色有光澤，頭頂有蓬鬆的羽冠。以種子和昆蟲為食，經常成群或棲或飛尋找食物，習性相當機敏、好動又喧嘩，常發出大聲的嬉鬧似的「小氣鬼...小氣鬼」叫聲，飛行時有時也會發出「嘰喳...嘰喳」的聲音。
還有細膩逗趣類似小貓〝喵喵〞叫的聲音。

※ In fact, there is an indigenous legend about the origin of its red beak:
Once upon a time, a mountain indigenous tribe, Bunun(布農), encountered a massive flood and took shelter on the top of the Jade Mountain (玉山). Unfortunately, the tribe people didn't bring enough food and clothes with them in such emergency, so not after a few days children were all freezing and starving.
Black bulbul took upon itself the task of bring the kindling material and fire to the tribe people. 🔥
Its feathers were burnt coal black, but it finally fulfilled the task, bringing the life-saving blazing torch with its heated, red-hot beak and feet. As a result, black bulbul is considered sacred by Bunun people.

Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical mangrove forest, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, arable land, plantations, and rural gardens. It is threatened by habitat loss and poaching. The straw-headed bulbul is prized for its singing ability and is a highly sought-after species by bird enthusiasts in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia. Merbah cerukcuk adalah sejenis burung pengicau dari suku Pycnonotidae. Orang Sunda menyebutnya cerukcuk atau jogjog, orang Jawa menyebut terucuk atau cerocokan, mengikuti bunyi suaranya yang khas. Dalam bahasa Inggris disebut Yellow-vented Bulbul.
