The straw-headed bulbul (Pycnonotus zeylanicus) is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is found from the Malay Peninsula to Borneo. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical or tropical mangrove forest, subtropical or tropical moist shrubland, arable land, plantations, and rural gardens. It is threatened by habitat loss and poaching.
The straw-headed bulbul is prized for its singing ability and is a highly sought-after species by bird enthusiasts in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia. This trade is causing population reductions across the species' range and is a major barrier to its conservation.[2] Trapping has been facilitated in recent years by the spread of logging roads across its forest habitat. Due to this, the straw-headed bulbul was uplisted from endangered to critically endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2018.[3] - Wikipedia
The bulbuls are a family, Pycnonotidae, of medium-sized passerine songbirds. Many forest species are known as greenbuls, brownbuls, leafloves, or bristlebills. The family is distributed across most of Africa and into the Middle East, tropical Asia to Indonesia, and north as far as Japan. A few insular species occur on the tropical islands of the Indian Ocean There are over 150 species in 27 genera. While some species are found in most habitats, the African species are predominantly found in rainforest. Rainforest species are rare in Asia, however, with Asian bulbuls preferring more open areas.
The word Bulbul is of Persian origin meaning "Nightingale" but in English it refers to Birds of a different Species.
The scaly-breasted bulbul (Pycnonotus squamatus) is a species of songbird in the Pycnonotidae family. It is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma, and Thailand. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.

When in Kindergarten, our 'house' was named Bulbul. This was when I was roughly 4 years old. There was an awareness that bulbul is a bird, but at least 15 years went by without me noticing one. Surprising, since this bird (or at least, the Red-Vented Bulbul) is supposed to be seen in the areas where I grew up and I'm sure I wouldn't have missed it.
Moving to Bangalore a few years ago, I saw my first bulbul.
This is probably the second-best photo of a Red-Whiskered Bulbul that I have so far. My personal favourite is this one. [Please excuse the watermark. I've learnt about how watermarks 'take' away the feel of the photograph through the years]
