Dear friends, I hope all is wonderful with you. I'm still very absent from Flickr due to family issues. I hope you understand. I'm trying to catch up with all of you, but slowly, due to the great lack of time... big hug and all the best to all of you!

Dull brown bulbul with paler underparts and gray streaking behind the ear. Common in lowland open forests and edges, including forested field fringes, parks, and gardens. The common rural (and oftentimes urban) bulbul throughout much of its range. Calls and songs are harsh and somewhat dry-sounding, without the melodic, musical quality of some other bulbuls. (eBird)
----------------
A common bird of southeast Asia and one of the birds that we usually had a chance of seeing, being that they are not quite so shy as many of their friends. We often saw them in small family groups, interacting noisily among themselves.

Greenish-yellow bulbul with a dark head and crest. Pale eyes give it a perpetually angry or surprised appearance. Found in forests from lowlands up into foothills and submontane areas; generally favors more open forests instead of dense cover. Often in pairs or small groups, seldom in large flocks. Song brief, fluid, and melodic, the highest note usually at or near the end. (eBird)
------------
As one of the most commonly seen birds during our trip, we referred to them as BCBs. Although common, they preferred to perch as far away as possible, so for all the times that we saw or heard them, I only photographed them in two locations and both times far away. This photo one had to be upsized 200% just to see the bird!

Didn't have to venture too far to capture this shot, and that's because this 'eye-catching' bird was perched on an aloe plant in the lobby of our hotel.
Also known as the Black-fronted Bulbul.
“Common, near-endemic resident and local nomad in arid savanna, riverine bush and gardens. Occurs singly, in pairs or in flocks; sometimes hawks insects.”

Large plain bulbul of lowland forests, edges, and mangroves. Dull brown with gray-streaked ear coverts, red eyes, and olive-green panels on the wings. Other similar large brown bulbuls such as Red-eyed and Cream-vented can also have olive tones in the wings, but less prominently. Song is a simple series of bubbly warbling interspersed with sharper notes. (eBird)

This bulbul was coming to the banana feeder near the dining room. He obligingly hopped onto the branch for a few minutes, giving me an opportunity for a nice photo.

A dark-headed brown bulbul with a bright red vent; common in towns, plantations, and forest edges. Red-vented Bulbul, with which it overlaps in southwestern China, can be similar, but it has a completely black head. Juvenile has orange vent and can be confused with Brown-breasted Bulbul, but the latter has a more strongly peaked head, no white tail trimming, brown auriculars, and a more contrasting white throat. Often seen in pairs and small flocks, foraging at mid-level and on the ground. Song consists of high-pitched warbling calls. (eBird)

Bulbuls are such an interesting family. They come in a variety of colours, but almost all have a crest like this one. This lovely lifer took the time to pose for me on this rather attractive branch.

Often seen, this lovely bulbul liked to perch out in the open. We were waiting for the fly-by of the Blossom-headed Parakeets (which did happen, at a distance) and passing the time looking at all the other early morning arrivals. Look closely to see just a smudge of his red vent.

Brownish-yellow bulbul with a faint white eyebrow and a weakly tufted crest. Roams about in pairs or small groups, sometimes associating with other species. Prefers open forest and edge habitat over dense mature forests. Often found in scrubbier, less pristine habitats than other bulbuls in its range, though tends not to occur in cities as readily as Red-vented and Red-whiskered Bulbuls; a regular visitor of rural gardens and farm edges. Simple song consists of alternating sharp whistles, warbled notes, and buzzy gurgling. Also gives harsh low buzzing calls. (eBird)
--------------
We saw or heard these bulbuls several times in Chiang Mai but only had one opportunity to photograph them. Luckily, they were quite open to be photographed and so for a change I had my pick of poses and settings. Here, this one is coming into a feeding station (with mealworms) and is checking to see if the laughingthrushes are gone.

Wikipedia: The puff-throated bulbul (Alophoixus pallidus) is a songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. The species was first described by Robert Swinhoe in 1870. It is found in Southeast Asia. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Conservation status: Least Concern
Dull gray-brown bulbul with a black head and bright white cheek patch. Also note yellow vent and white tail tip. A lowland species of dry forests, scrub, forest edge, parks, and gardens; can be quite common in cities and towns in parts of its range. Song brief but pleasant and fluid. Gives low raspy “chuk” as well as mellower call notes similar to components of its song. (eBird)
-------------
A small flock of bulbuls flew into the shrubs lining the entry to the wetlands. They took one look at us and decided that we were not interesting enough to stick around for. This was the only one to stay still long enough for photos and for all but this shot, hid his face behind the leaves.

Medium-sized songbird with predominantly dark plumage, a very short crest, and crimson bill and legs. Long tail and bill impart an elongated appearance. Head color varies considerably across distribution, ranging from white to dark gray to black. Often travels in large flocks, which move noisily between fruiting trees. Most commonly found in broadleaf evergreen and mixed deciduous forests but also regularly visits gardens and lowland forests. Extremely noisy, with a huge repertoire, emitting various squeaks, meows, chatters, whistles, and more. (eBird)
------------
I love these bulbuls! Although we saw or heard them several times around Chiang Mai, this is the one and only photo that I got of them. I am grateful that they picked such a nicely lit spot for a quick rest before moving on.

A yellowish canopy-dweller with a long, powerful-looking bill. Male is dark above and yellow below, while female is ironically distinctive in her lack of distinctive characteristics; she is plain gray-green above and yellow below. Both sexes can be separated from other ioras by the proportionally larger bill, greater size, and lack of wingbars. Inhabits primary and late secondary broadleaf forests, as well as forest edge, in lowland and foothill regions. Song is a rapid-fire series of high-pitched “chew” notes. Like other ioras, frequently joins mixed-species flocks. (eBird)
-------------
Even on our last day we were seeing new birds. We had heard or glimpsed this iora twice before so I was thrilled when this female finally came out into the open to bid us farewell.

True to its name, tends to be found in the upper reaches of forested hills and mountains. Olive-green overall, with lighter buffy underparts and a streaky gray throat. Crested head, similar size, and pale throat can cause it to superficially resemble Chestnut Bulbul in poor lighting, but Mountain Bulbul has a longer-billed and paler-faced appearance. Large flocks are loud and easily detected as they fly overhead, giving sharp, repetitive, echoing calls, which can be likened to “zyi-zya” or “zya-zya”. Song is a prolonged, repetitive series of call notes. (eBird)

We were lucky to see this lovely bulbul as we walked around the high-mountain village. Sitting calmly on a branch and enjoying the sunshine, it ignored us completely.

The mountain bulbul (Ixos mcclellandii) is a songbird species in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is often placed in Hypsipetes, but seems to be closer to the type species of the genus Ixos, the Sunda bulbul. It is found in Southeast Asia and is not considered a threatened species by the IUCN. It is named after British East India Company Surgeon John McClelland.
Fairly large, long-tailed, olive-green greenbul with a yellow throat. Found in forest, thick woodland, scrub, and rank cultivation. Rather shy and skulking species that is normally in pairs or small groups. Quite vocal; the call is a rapid, up-and-down barking. Similar to bearded greenbuls, but slimmer and without a reddish tail. (eBird)
------------------
We found this greenbul lurking around our hotel, and just as well we did for it was the only time that we saw it. Recently (2024) split from Yellow-throated Greenbul, it's the East African counterpart to the Pale-throated Greenbul (which we saw in Uganda).

The most common urban bulbul in Southeast Asia, this attractive songster is a common sight in cities, parks, and plantations, as well as in open forests, edges, and secondary growth. Brown above and whitish below with a bright yellow vent and a thick black line between the bill and the eye. Front edge of the weak, slightly peaked crest is also dark. Gives rolling, variable song and bubbly multiple-note calls. (eBird)

We've seen this bird in several other countries quite frequently but this was the first time in Thailand and the only photo opportunity. We had stopped at a rest stop for gas and a bathroom break and there he was, perched high on his shrub, surveying the land around him.
