A Yellow-vented Bulbul (pycnonotus goiavier gourdini). This is probably a juvenile. Adults have a crest, and there is very little to differentiate gender. I verified the ID on a website with an excellent gallery of birds in Sabah. I didn't know that there are so many other species of the bulbul, about 130 in all.
The bulbuls (pycnonotidae) are a family of medium-sized passerine songbirds. It is widely distributed across most of Africa, the Middle East, and from South East Asia to as far north as Japan. They eat a wide range of foods, including fruits, seeds, nectar, small insects and even small vertebrates.
Bulbuls are very vocal, with the calls of most species being described as nasal or gravelly. There are a few small trees beside my house and these birds can be heard every morning 'chatting' (rather than singing) in the hour before sunrise.
Red Vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer). Sub species haemorrhous is an endemic resident of Sri Lanka. An adult. Belongs to Pycnonotidae family. Clicked at Cinnamon Garden Place, Kaldemulla, Sri Lanka
White Browed Bulbul (Pycnonotus luteolus). Subspecies P.l.insulae is resident of Sri Lanka. Distributed throughout the Island and frequents wooded gardens and forests. Belongs to Pycnonotidae family.
