Scientific name: Pycnonotus brunneus
Red-vented bulbul
Red-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus cafer) is a species of bird in the Pycnonotidae family. DESCRIPTION
Red-vented bulbuls are slim, starling-sized songbirds with predominantly dark plumage. They are typically bold and conspicuous, with repetitive, monotonous calls. Their slim build (35 gram in weight) and curved bill are reminiscent of a honeyeater, although they are not closely related. The two most distinctive identification features are a small erectile crest on the crown (giving them a square-headed Roman helmet look when the crest is raised) and the diagnostic bright red patch between the base of the legs and the undertail. The head, hindneck and upper breast are glossy black, with a circular brown patch over the ear. This dark hood becomes streaked or scaly on the lower breast and merges into the pale grey belly. The upper wings and mantle are mid-brown with pale margins when in fresh plumage, creating a scaly appearance. The rump is white, and the tail is long and blackish with a prominent white tip. The bill, eyes and legs are dark. The sexes are alike, although males are slightly larger. Juveniles are dull brown with an orange or pinkish (cf. red) vent.

The common bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is found in north-eastern, northern, western and central Africa.
It is a conspicuous bird, which tends to sit at the top of a bush. As with other bulbuls they are active and noisy birds. The flight is bouncing and woodpecker-like. The call is a loud doctor-quick doctor-quick be-quick be-quick.

Medium-sized songbird with predominantly dark plumage, a very short crest, and crimson bill and legs. Long tail and bill impart an elongated appearance. Head color varies considerably across distribution, ranging from white to dark gray to black. Often travels in large flocks, which move noisily between fruiting trees. Most commonly found in broadleaf evergreen and mixed deciduous forests but also regularly visits gardens and lowland forests. Extremely noisy, with a huge repertoire, emitting various squeaks, meows, chatters, whistles, and more.

Gray-eyed Bulbul is a species in the Pycnonotidae that we saw only once on our guided birding trip in Thailand, at the Wat Tham Pha Plong temple in the Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary, Chiang Mai province. This is a bird of Southeast Asia.
This small greenbul is unusually plain, even by the standards of greenbuls. It does show a rusty tinge to the tail. Found in the understory and mid-story of forest, thickets, and overgrown cultivation. Skulking bird that is difficult to see well, but which is often common. Usually detected by distinctive song, which starts with hesitant introductory notes, then finishes with an explosive, bubbling jumble of notes. Very similar to several other greenbul species. Best distinguished by a combination of vocalizations and lack of a pale eye-ring.
Ankasa National Park, Ghana. March 2019.
Black-crested Bulbul is an ‘entertaining’ species, as shown in this video of two drinking at the water feature at a hide (blind) near Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province, Thailand. Those bright eyes and that jaunty black crest make them fun to watch.

The Red-tailed bristlebill (Bleda syndactylus) or common bristlebill, is a species of songbird in the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is widely present throughout the African tropical rainforest.
Largely olive-green above and greenish-yellow below with a yellow throat, bright blue facial skin around the eye, a large, angular, laterally compressed bill, and a long red tail.
This beautiful Red-tailed Bristlebill is a lifer and was photographed on a bird walk inside Kakamega Forest National Reserve, Kenya.
Stripe-throated Bulbul is but one of over 150 species in the Pycnonotidae. However the yellow on the throat and forecrown is of an intensity not seen in many other members of the family. This bird was at a hide (blind) near Kaeng Krachan National Park, Phetchaburi province, Thailand, Southeast Asia.

Collared Finchbill is a somewhat confusing common name for this member of the Bulbuls family (Pycnonotidae), given for the large bill {which is unlike the thin bills of most Bulbuls}. I saw this species on the lower reaches of the Dasyueshan Road, a renowned birding location on the island nation of Taiwan, East Asia.

Stripe-throated Bulbul has greenish plumage with yellow highlights, typical of many bulbuls, but the bright yellow throat and forecrown are distinctive. This individual stood out at a hide (blind) near Kaeng Krachan National Park. That famous protected area is in Phetchaburi province, Thailand.
