This is not one of the zoo exhibits, rather is it a visitor, just like us. Here is a free ranging bulbul on a fence at the Al Ain zoo. Bulbuls are a family, Pycnonotidae, of medium-sized passerine songbirds. Many forest species are known as greenbuls. The family is distributed across most of Africa and into the Middle East, tropical Asia to Indonesia, and north as far as Japan. A few insular species occur on the tropical islands of the Indian Ocean There are about 130 species in around 24 genera. Bulbuls eat a wide range of different foods, ranging from fruit to seeds, nectar, small insects and other arthropods and even small vertebrates. (Al Ain, UAE, Dec. 2012)

Photographed this beautiful bulbul near Pawalgarh Village, Uttarakhand, India. Light conditions were foggy and early morning

Bulbuls (Pycnonotidae) are a family of medium-sized passerine songbirds resident in Africa and tropical Asia. There are about 130 species.

These are mostly frugivorous birds. Some are colorful with yellow, red or orange vents, cheeks, throat or supercilia, but most are drab, with uniform olive brown to black plumage. Some have very distinct crests.

Many of these species inhabit tree tops, while some are restricted to the undergrowth. Up to five purple-pink eggs are laid in an open tree nests and incubated by the female.

The word bulbul may derive from Persian(بلبل), or from Turkish (bülbül), meaning nightingale.
