Birds often preen—running their beaks through their feathers or scratching their heads with a toe. Some birds have a special comb-like structure on one toe for this purpose. Preening helps to maintain their feathers and skin, to keep them warm and dry, to remove parasites, and to strengthen their relationships.

Flavescent Bulbul (Pycnonotus flavescens vividus), Doi Lang, Thailand

The flavescent bulbul (Pycnonotus flavescens) is a species of songbird in the Pycnonotidae family. Its name comes from flavescent, a yellowish colour.

It is found in Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, Thailand, and Vietnam. The subspecies P. f. leucops is endemic to the island of Borneo; it is sometimes considered a full species known as the pale-faced bulbul. The natural habitat of the flavescent bulbul is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.

This the slate-grey subspecies that occupies most of the Himalayan range. Usually treated as conspecific with H. ganeesa, but marked differences in morphology and vocalizations indicate that the two are better considered separate species.

Red-whiskered Bulbuls are native to southern Asia, but were introduced into Sydney in 1880 and later to Melbourne around the mid-1900s. The Melbourne population has remained fairly concentrated; the birds from Sydney have spread along the east coast.

Their spread to the Blue Mountains dates from the 1950s, reaching the Upper Mountains in the early 1960s.

Very cool with his distinctive red bill and red feet! "Bulbuls are a family, Pycnonotidae, of medium-sized passerine songbirds. The family is distributed across most of Africa and into the Middle East, tropical Asia to Indonesia, and north as far as Japan." ... from Wikipedia. The first Bulbul I ever saw was the Red-whiskered Bulbul, at the Los Angeles Arboretum in Arcadia, California - an introduced bird.

The Common Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus) is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. It is a ubiquitous resident breeder throughout Africa. Other names include Black-eyed Bulbul and Common Garden Bulbul.

The bulbuls are a widespread family of songbirds, found much over Africa and Asia.

The Common Bulbul has a number of subspecies; some authorities consider P. b. dodsoni (Dodson’s Bulbul), P. b. somaliensis (Somali Bulbul) and P. b. tricolor (Dark-capped Bulbul) as separate species from the nominate P. b. barbatus.

The Philippine Bulbul (Hypsipetes philippinus) is a songbird species in the bulbul family (Pycnonotidae). It is often placed in the genus Ixos, but is better retained in Hypsipetes as long as this is not entirely merged into Ixos, as it is quite closely related to the type species of Hypsipetes, the Black Bulbul (H. leucocephalus).[1]

It is endemic to the Philippines. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests; on Mount Kitanglad on Mindanao for example it is abundant in any kind of primary forest at least between 500 and 2,250 m ASL.[2]

Fledglings of the Philippine Bulbul were recorded on Mindanao in late April, but the breeding season seems to be prolonged as females with ripe ovarian follicles were still found in April and May. Territorial songs are heard at lower altitudes as late as May, while further upslope the birds are silent at that time of year and presumably engaged in breeding activity. The Besra (Accipiter virgatus) has been recorded as a predator of young Philippine Bulbuls, and this or other goshawks might also catch adult birds.[3]

A common and adaptable bird as long as sufficient forest remains, it is not considered a threatened species by the IUCN.[4]
