Pentacon Six TL w/ Carl Zeiss Jena Biometar 120mm f/2.8 and Ilford FP4+ @ EI ?? (Kodak Xtol 1:1, Ilford rapid fixer). f/4, 1/60s. Epson V600 and EpsonScan @ 4800 dpi, downsized to 2400 dpi. Retouched and cropped.

First photos from my latest visit to Hamburg. This one was taken from a series from the court at a pizzeria at Sternschanze.

The light in this location was quite tricky. The meter on my P6 told me f/4 & 1/60s @ EI 140 (halfstop between 100 and 200), and my Nikon F3HP gave me the same reading, but at EI 320 (I had TMax400 in it that I later developed in HC-110).

I developed the TMY first, and the frames from this location was maybe a stop overexposed. The model had another brighter jacket on those photos, so maybe it wasn't a fair comparison?

Regardless, I decided to push this film with Xtol 1:1 (which increases the boxspeed a bit, and holds back the contrast) instead of going with HC-110 as I had planned when I shot the film. I'd rather overdevelop the film a bit than underdevelop it when I know that the model's agency expect usable photos. So I just picked EI 500 from the Xtol data sheet, 13min @ 21.1 C / 70 F - even if EI 200-250 would probably have been more correct.

The negative didn't turn out on the denser side. Sure, you could see some overdevelopment, but it wasn't much. But then traditional grained film is more willing to take abuse and Xtol is a fairly moderate developer when it comes to overdevelopment.

I can get Kodak Gold 200 fairly easily and for an okay price near me, but 400 ISO film is a bit harder and more expensive to get, so I tried pushing and push processing Gold 200, because 400 is handy for fall and winter light conditions. I got a couple of shots in sunny conditions, some in undercast conditions, and a few indoors too, and while the grain is not bad, the shadows need to come out a bit more. The film can possibly have more time in the developer or I can scan with my Epson V550 where I can do more adjustments, but my Pakon F135 is so convenient and I like the colours from it.

Bishnoi translates as Twenty-niners, as the followers have 29 principles to follow. One of the 29 principles states that trees and animals are to be protected, thus trees and animals are considered to be sacred by the Bishnois.

In 1730, wood was needed for some construction work at the Jodhpur fort. An official of the court, with the permission of Maharaja Abhay Singh, set off to cut Khejri trees which grew aplenty on the farms of the Bishnois. The official reached Khejarli village and ordered the soldiers to cut the trees. A woman called Amrita Devi clung to the trees in a bid to prevent their destruction. At that point she spoke the famous quote: Sar santey rookh rahe to bhi sasto jaan (a chopped head is cheaper than a felled tree). The trees were nevertheless cut; so was Amrita Devi's head.

As the news spread, more and more Bishnois streamed into Khejarli from surrounding villages and offered their lives to protect the trees. The bizarre sacrifice is said to have continued for three days, before the Maharaja put a stop to the madness. By then, 363 Bishnoi women, men and children had been slain. Moved by the event, the king asked for forgiveness from the community and banned cutting of trees and hunting in the Bishnoi areas.

I enjoy trips to Astoria. This friendly man went to decent lengths to stop out of my field of view; he stopped to explain he'd heard the motor drive and didn't want to waste my film! Turned out though that not only had I wanted to catch him on the platform (the smile is a bonus), but there was basically no way he could've gotten out of the shot when we're talking about two 45mm frames side by side.

This was actually the shoot that made me start investigating TMax400 as a serious option, since the grain was a tad too invasive in the overall impression of the photo.

Shooting indoor with a 400-film during the non-summer part of the year, usually means that you push it. So the ability to retain shadow detail becomes somewhat important. I probably need to do some proper head-to-head comparison between pushed TMY-2 and 400TX before I can make some final judgement.

Sure the skintones are great, but I'm not pleased with the texture.
