Sue is working from home tomorrow, as she has been for a few days. Due to changes in call plans that I've made, she's switching from mobile to land line tomorrow.
Atop this desk normally sits a beautiful, original bakelite phone which is fully functional. Alas, I fear that dialling 9 for an outside line, 141 to withhold the number and then an 11 digit phone number would get tedious very quickly on a rotary dialler!
This, be assured, is only temporary.

To make the shutter release work (which is the ONLY button on the Meike grip that will control the a55) I had to add wires directly to the shutter switch. The switch is a 4 pin pushbutton. I forgot to take pics while I had it all apart, but from this angle, the white is ground (both pins on the left side), the brown (right front) is focus and red is shutter release. I wired these to a 3/32" plug which I installed in the side of the Meike grip. This allows me to use the plug that came with the Ownuser grip until I have the chance to make a shorter one.

This type of light switch was widely manufactured from the initial advent of light switches (late 1800s) to the 1920s. After that the modern flip type of switch became more common. (You can still buy "reproduction" push-button switches, though, in case you are decorating your house in a vintage style.)
I had lived in this place for several months before I realized that this was a light switch -- I initially thought it was a remnant of an old intercom system, where you press one button to transmit and another to receive. (there are such things that look similar) The mystery was solved one day when I actually pressed the button, and the light turned on. Oh.

Only 1 die, actually. It "rolls" the die when you shake it. It can roll any of the usual RPG dice, from 4-sided to 20-sided and percentage. The pushbutton selects which type of die to roll. The case is salvaged - it came with a set of earbuds. Inspired by tronixstuff.

This tiny controller PC board has two connectors (one for power in and one for lights out) and a terminal block. The magnetic or pushbutton switch is attached to the PC board via the two connectors on the terminal block, and two green LEDs indicate power on/off and switch on/off.

Despite being a pain to turn on, it works rather well most of time. However, even the shortest distance setting seems a long way.

We've owned our Volvo XC70 since April 2016. Coming from a 16 year old car, the features on this car are a world away from the 2000 Volvo V70 'Classic' it replaced.
The remote opening electrically powered tailgate is a handy feature. When operated the rear tail lights come on automatically if the light level is low. This is to warn other road users.
To close there is a pushbutton on the tailgate. Remote closing is deemed a safety hazard - it does however have a clutch and it will stop if there is too much resistance detected. An aftermarket module can be fitted to give remote closing functionality.
In some situations I feel very slightly embarrassed at this 'posh' feature. I shouldn't really, I've worked hard to pay for this car.

The traffic signal pole has two mastarms, the electrical service, Western Systems NEMA TS2-1 stretch M traffic signal cabinet, Alpha Sidemount 6 battery backup, pedestrian indications PTZ camera, two Opticom detectors, and one Polara Navigator APS pedestrian pushbutton.
This intersection includes a Polara 4-wire APS pushbutton system. The 4-wire system does not include the CCU device in the signal cabinet. During design, I found that the Polara CCU2EN device was too large to fit inside the M or stretch M cabinet. The connection harness for the CCU2EN stuck out so far, that the door would not close because the connection harness would conflict with the door switches. The 4-wire system does not allow for Ethernet communications to the APS system. The 4-wire system has a card that resides in the ped head, which has two wires connected to the Don't WALK. The other two wires function as the contact closure to the ped inputs on the cabinet.
A HUGE NOTE. Do not, under any circumstances, connect the 4-wire ped pushbuttons to a CCU2EN. If you connect the 4-wire pushbuttons to the CCU2EN, the CCU2EN will damage a resistor in the 4-wire button, rendering them useless. The buttons can be repaired, but you don't need to relearn this after we learned it the hard way.
