I was proposed to on February 29th four years ago, then married and cheated upon within 13 months. Have left all of that behind now but decided it would be appropriate remembrance to melt down the ring I was presented with. A way of exorcising the last of the demons that left me feeling strangely elated.

Goetheanum | Dornach | Switzerland

An architectural series of an anthroposophic building in Dornach, Switzerland.

The Goetheanum is the world center for the anthroposophical movement.

The building was designed by Rudolf Steiner and named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It includes two performance halls (1500 seats), gallery and lecture spaces, a library, a bookstore, and administrative spaces for the Anthroposophical Society; neighboring buildings house the society's research and educational facilities. Conferences focusing on themes of general interest or directed toward teachers, farmers, doctors, therapists, and other professionals are held at the center throughout the year.

Both the present Goetheanum building and its precursor have been widely cited as masterpieces of modern architecture.

Steiner's architecture is characterized by a liberation from traditional architectural constraints, especially through the departure from the right-angle as a basis for the building plan. For the first Goetheanum he achieved this in wood by employing boat builders to construct its rounded forms; for the second Goetheanum by using concrete to achieve sculptural shapes on an architectural scale. The use of concrete to achieve organically expressive forms was an innovation for the times; in both buildings, Steiner sought to create forms that were spiritually expressive.

In this coastal area our drinking water is (further) purified by dunesand. This spot, where the already partly filtered freshwater (from the IJsselmeer) appears at the surface, is called "the jellyfish". In the background I spotted two swimming Common mergansers (Grote zaagbek-Mergus merganser); no breeding bird, but a winter guest in our country. © Tom Kisjes

''Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and richness to life that nothing else can bring'' - O. Wilde (Irish Poet, Novelist, Dramatist and Critic, 1854 - 1900)

Pedoman dan panduan kehidupan...

Omizuya (holy water bath), today can be found in all shrines in Japan. Visitors here purify their hands and mouth before entering the shrine. In the old days, however, temple visitors washed their hands and mouth with natural water from the river and the spring. The omizuya of the Toshogu shrine was built for the purpose of purifying the visitors. The basin is 1.2 meters wide, 2.6 meters deep and 1 meter high. The basin was consecrated in 1618 by Nabeshima Katsushige, feudal lord of Kyushu-Saga. The omizuya has remained completely unchanged except for the repair of a few structural elements.

The omizuya introduced a few important architectural techniques. One of them is the use of stone pillars. The other is the water supply system. An aqueduct had been constructed that ran from a water source near the takino-o-jinja to the water basin of Omizuya. A siphon mechanism was also added. Today the water is supplied with a modern metal pipe system.

Sculptures of the flying dragon have been placed under the roof of the omizuya. This one has wings and is treated like the spiritual beast that controls water. A part was cut in the west corner of the roof to place an amulet there

I feel it, it's coming

Rain, feel it on my finger tips

Hear it on my window pane

Your love's coming down like

Rain, wash away my sorrow

Take away my pain

Your love's coming down like rain...

Never-aging geometries of Sumitomo Building: looking down from its 52nd floor. Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. © Michele Marcolin, 2008.

-----

Sorting out the library for a backup I stumbled on these forgotten shots of Sumitomo Building, one of the most iconic structure of the Shinjuku metropolitan area, which I had the luck to use frequently during my early stays in Tokyo to study Japanese at a school that was located inside it.

The architects made an original use of the available space, with its three sided structure, despite sacrificing valuable floor space by including a massive vertical atrium running the entire height of the building - which is also it distinctive element. Somehow it reminds of the 'Indastria' complex of the famous animation series 'Mirai Shonen Conan'.

Construction began in November 1971 and was finished by March 6, 1974. At the time of its completion, its elevators were the fastest in the world at 540 meters per minute. It was the tallest building in Tokyo from March to September 1974 when it was surpassed by the Shinjuku Mitsui Building which is located just to the east of it.

A beautiful free observation deck on the 51st floor was closed on April 1, 2017, while following a period of renovation works, a large space for public events, the “Sankaku Hiroba” (triangular plaza), was opened at its feet on July 1, 2020. It is an all-weather atrium (approx. 3,250㎡) created by a gigantic glass roof over an open public space incorporated into the building’s design.

The purifying water of the Castalian (Kastalian) spring (Κασταλία πηγὴ) gushed from the slopes of the Phaedriada (aka Hyampeia in antiquity).

The stone fountain of the same name (Κασταλία κρήνη) was built along the side of the road leading to the temple of Apollo in 6th century BC. It supplied the —then sacred— oracle with water for purification.

During the modern era the fountain was rebuilt in 1959 by the architect Anastassios Orlandos and was restored in 1977 by the French Archaeological School at Athens.
