January 16-February 12, 2007

The Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53rd Street

Mirroring the pulsating rhythms and energies of the city, Doug Aitken’s sleepwalkers was a multiscreen cinematic art experience that integrated film projections with the architectural fabric of its environs. Noting that “the city is about communication,” Aitken responded by transforming the concrete, glass, and brick of The Museum of Modern Art’s façade into a fluid mesh of interlacing narratives. While the films suggested an inner life of the buildings, they also reclaimed modern architecture for personal expression and imbued anonymity with fluid human presence.

The film itself depicted the nocturnal journeys of five characters representing city dwellers—a bicycle messenger, an electrician, a postal worker, a businessman, and an office worker. As they moved from the solitude of their personal and professional lives into the chaotic and rich interrelationships of their urban existences, the characters’ individual narratives were juxtaposed on different surfaces of the Museum’s exterior, with moments of parallel synchronicity in their movements emphasizing both the solitude of their lives as well as their membership in the same urban community.

In collaboration with MoMA, the project was the artist’s first large-scale public artwork in the United States and was the first to bring art to the newly renovated museum’s exterior walls.

Its 4 am. My skin is pulsating off of my body, three monsters deep. I thought of it. Using light as a fuel source. Liftoff was achieved if only for a brief moment. Balance was difficult, but distance was covered. Ask michael, he was there.

Almost twenty years since shedding the Soviet yoke, Estonia still pulsates with the excitement and adrenaline of a fledgling state - and nowhere more so than in its dynamic capital Tallinn. After centuries of foreign rule, Estonians have finally got control of their country and they're determined to enjoy every minute of it. In fact, with the economy booming, cultural events rife, and a restaurant and nightlife scene that keep going from strength to strength, Tallinners have never had it better! Throw in a UNESCO-listed Old Town, a scattering of Gothic spires, a Medieval castle, Tsar's Palace and a couple of sandy beaches by the Baltic, and it's little wonder that us foreigners want a slice of the action too!

The Grandiose Speech of Dr. Axiom Nexus (Sarcastic and Mocking)

Scene: A vast, high-tech lair with a glowing, pulsating core in the background. Dr. Axiom Nexis, clad in an elegant exosuit with a faint hum of power, paces slowly around a restrained Agent 002, his voice dripping with mockery.

“Well, well, well… Agent 002. Look at you—bruised, battered, yet still managing to exude that trademark grim determination. Oh, I can see it in your eyes—you’re thinking, ‘This isn’t over.’ Let me save you the trouble: oh, it most definitely is.

Let’s be honest, 002. Did you really think you were going to stop me? Me? I have calculated the probability of success for every scenario—every single one!—and you know what the odds of you winning were? A scintillating 0.00000003 percent. And that’s when I was being generous! Yet here you are, stubbornly clinging to that foolish hope. It’s almost… adorable….and pathetic.

But let me enlighten you, since it’s clear you’re struggling to grasp the entire situation. Behold: the Nexus Core.” (He waves theatrically toward the glowing central structure.) “Beautiful, isn’t it? Capable of controlling every network, system, and device across the globe. And it only needs one final input—my input—to bring humanity’s chaos to an end. You spent your career fighting crime, corruption, and disasters. Don’t you think it’s ironic that I’m about to solve all those problems… permanently?

Oh, but don’t mistake this for altruism, dear Agent. No, no, no. This isn’t about saving the world—it’s about fixing it, and making sure I am in charge when it’s done. Call it a… public service. You should thank me, really. After all, when people look back on history, they won’t even remember your little escapades. They’ll remember me—Dr. Nexus, the man who did what their pathetic governments and so-called heroes could never do.

But you? Oh, you’ll have the privilege of being my footnote, a cautionary tale of what happens to pests who dare challenge brilliance. Think of it this way, Agent: you’ll be remembered. Briefly. In the same way one remembers a fly before it’s swatted.”

(Dr. Nexus leans down to look 002 directly in the eyes, his metallic grin wide and mocking.)

“And now, for the grand finale. I’ve saved the best for last, of course. While you sit there thinking, ‘There must be a way out of this!’ I’ll be flipping the switch that changes the world forever. You’ll get the honor of watching the beginning of a perfect new era. Or, well… maybe just the beginning of the end. We’ll see how long you hold out before the boom.”

(He smirks, straightens up, and adjusts his suit, turning away.)

“Don’t go anywhere, Agent. You wouldn’t want to miss the fireworks. Goodbye, and… do try to die with a little dignity, won’t you?”

(Dr. Nexis steps away, activating the Nexus Core as the room begins to rumble with power. Agent 002 struggles in the shadows, defiant to the last.)

With a dismissive wave, Dr. Nexis leaves the scene, his mocking laughter echoing through the lair.

Another pulsating ending to an important fixture up Westfield Lane. Skem had a player sent off after 10 seconds ! - Frickley go 2-0 up , Skem bravely fight back to equalise in 92nd minute .... but then Frickley go up other end and 'crazy pinball' in the penalty box score a 96th minute winner via Donny on loan player Joe Pugh . Everyone jumps on each other and the place goes nuts ! Moments after the final whistle and the pitch is cleared the Skem management are still sitting in the dugout in disbelief as to what they had just witnessed. Speechless and motionless.

This one got a darker tone, moody, pulsating neons, leaking atmospheric lights the way I think cyberpunk should be. But not just that. It was hard to compensate the ugly yellow

tinting with shaders that modify the overall tone with both real metal golden-esque intended by Eidos Montreal's DX and a blue-over-black energy from Ion Storm's DX.

Some places were almost unplayable with all effects turned on due to the blinding white, so I assigned a toggle on/off hotkey for bloom/magic bloom settings and another for ambient lights to tune down the light expansion. For all the effects working 100% at the time, it should be necessary to edit the level lights (and AFAIK it's impossible right now) or painstakingly micromanage for test and error the pixel range for every effect from this preset every corner of the game.

Human back in pulsating pain

Mounting the bull,

slowly I return homeward.

The voice of my flute intones through the evening.

Measuring with hand-beats the pulsating harmony,

I direct the endless rhythm.

Whoever hears this melody will join me.

This struggle is over;

gain and loss are assimilated.

I sing the song of the village woodsman,

and play the tunes of the children.

Astride the bull,

I observe the clouds above.

Onward I go,

no matter who may wish to call me back.

There was a strange, “pulsating” noise in my bedroom earlier this afternoon. I figured that it was just a glitch in the computer. After I refreshed my hot tea, I noticed a blue, Police Public Call Box on my computer table that I didn’t recall being there before.

All of my silver seemed to be attracted to the Blue Call Box and gathered in front of it to provide it energy. Even the Spanish only speaking silver coins. Alamo Basement Aggie Ring was on top of it.

“Run!” cried out Aggie Ring. “Save the James Avery Armadillo Ring. The Armadillo must survive. Armadillos are the future of Texas. They possess the magic of dragons and can fly.”

Aggie Ring told me that if I stood before the Stargate in our garage, I could punch the forth chevron with all of my might. “You’ll break your fist, but the Stargate will go into Stargate ‘Panic Mode’ and send you and the Armadillo to a random address of a world better than Darkest Central Texas where we currently reside.”

“Run!” screamed Aggie Ring. “ Get to the Stargate. Leave the trumpet behind! Weeping Angels are coming. Don’t blink and find Sarah Jane Smith and the K-9.”

Well, I was a kid for most of the 60's but this reminds me of black-light posters and groovyness... those pulsating blues and greens.

Believe it or not, the source photo for this is a close-up of an evening primrose (known as a buttercup here in Texas(!)) which has been inverted, kaleidoscoped, scrambled, ortoned, fried, and delivered on a black platter.

New Media

Dune is an interactive landscape which reacts to the behaviour of people. This hybrid of nature and technology exists out of large amounts of fibres which are brightened according to the sounds and motion of passing visitors.

Dune investigates nature in a futuristic relation with urban space by means of looking, walking and interacting. Walking through Dune has been described in the media as being an "Alice in Technoland."

After traveling from Victoria & Albert Museum in London to Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2010 a special version of Dune will transform the Lower Bay Station in downtown Toronto into an interactive landscape of light.

Daan Roosegaarde is Creative Director of Studio Roosegaarde, an artistic laboratory for interactive projects which won the Dutch Design Award 2009. Daan Roosegaarde's work explores the dynamic relation between architecture, people and e-culture. His sculptures create a situation of 'tactile high-tech' where visitor and (public) space become one. Roosegaarde's interactive projects have been internationally exhibited at V2_, The National Art Center Tokyo, the Venice Biennale 2009, and Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
