This portrait, characterized by an imposing, bald head with pulsating veins clearly visible, is that of an elderly man of the Roman middle class. The face marked by deep lines, is extremely expressive.

Photographed at the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, Rome.

through continuo is a constellation of events. some are random: gamma-ray detection and the presence and behaviors of visitors, and some are composed: the sonification of the gamma-rays (the quiet pops and clicks one hears around the work), the look of the installation, and the changing frequencies of the LEDs. "frequencies of the LEDs" refers not to the brightening and dimming, but to the changing rates of pulsation.

viewers experience gamma radiation as sound and light. the relationship between the gamma-ray detection and the pops and clicks of sound is linear, 1:1. the relationship between the soft pops and clicks to changes in the frequencies of the leds is statistical, non linear. each led has its own pattern of brightening, dimming, and pulsating, and those behaviors are influenced by a statistical analysis of gamma-ray detection in real time.

essentially, the work has linear and logarithmic relationships based on random events. for the viewer, this creates an experience that oscillates between one's impulse to understand events as sequential/temporal and a work that is inherently spectral, i.e., based on persistent, shifting frequencies.

in the context of the binary title of the show at the Brooklyn Zen Center, Silence and Noise, we're thinking about time and frequency, and how one's experience is persistently both, but how from an increasing number of perspectives time is an illusion unique to the human mind. the universe, it seems, is not sequence, it is waves - but we are wired so that to us its always both. in through continuo the linear relationship between the gamma-ray events and the audible clicks is a noise element in that it evokes the temporal mind, and the silence is the silence of the visible change in LED frequency. the Silence and Noise effect is that the work itself is an oscillation, a wavelet and an interval between the two.

Flowform sculptures have been proven to improve the quality of water and help biological processes that occur within it and in the organisms it sustains. They have been used in water purification processes enhancing their capabilities. In this case water does not pulsate inside the sculpture but it is only used to carry it down giving it a surface suitable for the creation of vortices.

Siddal 14 Leigh Miners 23

National Conference Premier

Pulsating entertainment in the Yorkshire rain as these two quality teams got stuck into each other. Pre Match, Miners Head Coach gave his players a right going over on the back of last weeks dismal offering at Wath Brow. Post match he was all praise for what was a fantastic performance . Siddal bossed for most of the first half and lesser teams than Miners would have buckled under the pressure. However Siddal continued to be their own worst enemies, straying offside from a goal-line drop-out and then holding down under the own posts to give Miners two routine penalty conversions for a 10-6 lead at the break.

Early 2nd half Siddal pressure forced two quick tries and they looked certain to go on and win especially when Miners then had a try disallowed after the ball was ruled to have run dead. The last twenty minutes was fantastic end to end excitement. Miners nudged in front when they slipped through to score under the posts but the decisive score was an audacious drop goal from Miners followed by a long range penalty which effectively sealed the victory much to the delight of the very wet travelling Leythers.

The bucolic setting, great welcome and food, makes a visit to Siddal one of the most enjoyable on the Amateur Rugby League circuit and is one of my favourites, and today was no different.

Like the reflections of light off a holiday ornament, a pulsating aurora borealis shoots colourful emanations across the sky. When the electrons from solar winds collide with oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere, they release waves of vibrant green and red.

This dramatic display was captured earlier this year at the Athabasca University Geophysical Observatory II on an early March morning above Long Lake, about 130 kilometres north of Edmonton.

Everything Comes in Waves

Kentaro Yamada presents a large scale light installation, arranging a series of light bulbs connected to each other by black electrical cables on the gallery floor. The bulbs pulsate in intervals, translating a human breathing pattern known as Cheyne-Stokes respiration into a motion of light. This abnormal breathing pattern occurs before one’s death. It is characterised by a period where respiration is temporarily suspended, followed by a cycle of deeper and faster breaths. Each time the breath is suspended, it is uncertain whether the cycle will continue or the subject has died.

Light is used as a symbol for life to reflect on the artist’s personal experience. He took care of a beloved person in the last months before death and witnessed the gradual decay of the body. Despite the decay and change he was observing, he recalls that there was something essential about the person that remained constant. Yamada puts the spotlight on this extreme moment – a moment so tragic, yet full of new perception and heightened awareness that it could even be suitable for comedy or satire.

Tsunami No.1-3 (42” HD), follows a similar idea. Also in this work Yamada plays with the inherent beauty of a tragic event. Three dyline prints, an old analogue printing method originally utilised for architectual prints, are displayed in the gallery. A characteristic of these blue prints is that the coloring of the paper and the ink will slowly fade with the passage of time. The artist took screenshots from news broadcasts of the Tsunami catastrophe in Japan in March 2011. The prints show a giant wave running straight towards the coast. Freezing a single moment from the video, Yamada is putting the wave under the spotlight, highlighting its inherent beauty which is completely overwhelming and beyond human control. In this work artist points out the sublime quality of a tragic event once again.

The artist and La Scatola Gallery will donate proceeds from these prints to Japan Tsunami relief funds.

So, a pulsating ball of fire came out of our oven and at me on baking night. Luckily I only burnt my hand, lost some hair, armhair and eyelashes.

My hack: a wearable proximity sensor, which allows traffic travelling behind cyclists to see via pulsating red/amber/green pulsating heart if they're travelling to close to the cyclist. I had to hurry to finish the functionality, so it's not so pretty - but I'm going to tidy it up. All told I made it in a evening and an afternoon, so that's not long to design, code and build an electronic wearable!

A prototype for a piece of wearable technology using LilyPad Arduino, RGB LED, proximity sensor, conductive thread and fabrics to create an easily velcro-ed on and off and highly visable alert for traffic traveling behind cyclists. A pulsating RGB LED heart is triggered by a proximity sensor if something is travelling close behind it. A green calm pulsating heart indicates a safe distance is maintained, an amber faster heart indicates that caution should be observed and a red rapidly pulsating heart indicates to the driver that they need to back off and give the cyclist some space. As this is a prototype at the ideas stage, safe distances and final technology, such as sonar for proximity detection and other materials/components TBC.

"The interesting question is… why does it exhibit such a phenomenon? Is there a purpose designed by nature for such a visual feast? After years of infrequent and casual discussions with local arachnologists Joseph Koh and David Court, as well as some random discussions with other arachnophiles on Facebook, I’ve consolidated a short list of hypotheses in an attempt to explain this behavior. Please let me know via the comments section if you have other suggestions or know of studies that could explain this behavior.

OMG I just found out what the cute looking and brightly coloured antennae are all about.

The snail has been infected by a parasitic flatworm that uses it as an intermediate host. It infects the antennae with it's brood sac which is brightly coloured with conspicuous pulsating bands. It also makes the snails move towards light so it climbs to a more conspicuous position(in this case it was moving up a reed). The object is to get it eaten by a bird, the next host in the life cycle.

Of all the shots I took inside the bank, I think this one comes closest to capturing the amazing yellow-green-earthy light that fills the space. It was a partly cloudy day, and the entire vast room seem to breathe and pulsate as the sunlight diminished and returned.
