366 days… 2 cameras …364 people

All of us are enmeshed in a daily network of inter-personal relationships: with family and friends, acquaintances and co-workers, with people in shops or strangers in the street. It is the sum of all these relationships that defines our social world.

The eyes } world { hands project documents the world seen through the eyes of photographic artist Dirk Spennemann. On each day of the year in 2008, Dirk photographed a different person, with the first and last days book-ended by ‘self-portraits’ of the two cameras used.

Shot on location, these images capture the diversity of modern society, filtered by the photographer’s experience and contact range. The 364 photographic portraits focus on the eyes and hands of the participants. In most eyes you can see a reflected image of the world around the photographer, and in the hands you see the instruments that actively shaped that world 2008.

The portraits encompass all walks of life, from A (academic) to Z (zoo photographer), from high (flight attendant) to low (diving consultant), from high-tech (IT specialist) to low-tech (happy camper), from past (archaeologist) to future (futurist).

The locations where the eye photos were taken reflects the artist’s own activity range. As an university academic, he traveled to a variety of locations in Australia and overseas during 2008. While the majority of images were taken in Albury-Wodonga, the photo series exemplifies the increasing mobility and globalization of our community

Edited Chandra Space Telescope/XMM-Newton image of a black hole pulsating (or at least the material/radiation around the black hole) in the galaxy GSN 069.

Original caption: A supermassive black hole is blasting out X-rays about every nine hours, according to data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton, as described in our latest press release. This indicates that this black hole, containing about 400,000 times the mass of our Sun, is consuming significant amounts of material about three times per day.

The main panel of this graphic is a visible light image taken by the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) around the galaxy known as GSN 069, located in the center of the image. The inset gives a time-lapse of Chandra data taken over a period of about 20 hours on February 14 and 15, 2019, centered on the X-ray source in the middle of GSN 069. The sequence runs in a loop to show that the X-ray brightness of the source changes regularly and dramatically over the Chandra observation. Three X-ray eruptions are observed. (Note that to clearly show the Chandra source is located in GSN 069, the size of the box in the center of the DSS image is about ten times larger than the Chandra field in the inset.)

XMM-Newton was the first to observe this phenomenon in GSN 069 with the detection of two bursts on December 24, 2018. Researchers then followed up with more XMM-Newton observations on January 16 and 17, 2019, and found five outbursts. The Chandra observations less than a month later — on February 14 and 15 — revealed an additional three outbursts.

These repetitive outbursts are evidence that the supermassive black hole at the center of GSN 069, located 250 million light years from Earth, is consuming about four Moons' worth of material about three times a day. That's equivalent to almost a million billion billion pounds going into the black hole per feeding.

While scientists had previously found two "stellar-mass" black holes (that weigh about 10 times the Sun's mass) occasionally undergoing regular outbursts before, this behavior has never been detected from a supermassive black hole until now.

During the outbursts the X-ray emission detected by Chandra becomes about 20 times brighter than during the quiet times. The temperature of gas falling towards the black hole also climbs, from about one million degrees Fahrenheit during the quiet periods to about 2.5 million degrees Fahrenheit during the outbursts. The temperature of the latter is similar to that of gas found around most actively growing supermassive black holes.

The origin of this hot gas has been a long-standing mystery because it appears to be too hot to be associated with the disk of infalling matter surrounding the black holes. Although its origin is also a mystery in GSN 069, the ability to study a supermassive black hole where hot gas repeatedly forms then disappears may provide important clues.

The Chandra data were crucial for this study because they were able to show that the X-ray source is located in the center of the host galaxy, which is where a supermassive black hole is expected to be. The combination of data from Chandra and XMM-Newton implies that the size and duration of the black hole's meals have decreased slightly, and the gap between the meals has increased. Future observations will be crucial to see if the trend continues.

A paper describing these results, with lead author Giovanni Minuitti (ESA's Center of Astrobiology in Spain), appeared in the September 11, 2019 issue of the journal Nature. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center manages the Chandra program. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's Chandra X-ray Center controls science and flight operations from Cambridge, Massachusetts.

We are in the Gallery of Icons. This is home for all our forgotten lesser gods and goddesses, demi, semi and pseudo gods, our archangels and saints of yesteryore. There's even a few rare mortals of presumed note here.

Now, over here we find the likeness, meticulously sculpted in petrified rat turd by convicted Guatamalan drug smugglers, of Qetzlmergatroid, the Mayan god of mudwalking. Living in cities and walking around in shoes and on concrete as we do, it is hard for us civilized folks to envision a need for a god whose duty it was to oversee the act of walking through mud, but back in the proverbial day, Qetzlmergatroid was a busy god and one justly revered. Fever victims, of which there were many, were made to slog back and forth through mudholes in order to lower their body temperatures and at the same time appease Qetzlmergatroid's demand that they walk through mudpuddles. If they faltered or passed out, they were summarily sucked into whirling mud spirals, never to be seen again until archeologists puzzled and pondered over their bones. Tiny effigies of Qetzlmergatroid, carved out of similarly petrified rodent droppings, were often recovered from these same alluvial deposits and provide us with conclusive proof that Mayans were a bunch of superstitious loonies...

After I explained to my daughter what was on its back , she went and removed all the wasp cocoons to save it.

M. sexta larvae are green in color and grow up to 70 millimeters in length. Under laboratory conditions, while fed a wheat-germ based diet, larvae are turquoise due to a lack of pigments in their diet. M. sexta blood contains the blue-colored protein insecticyanin. When the larva feeds on plants it ingests pigmentacious carotenoid proteins. Carotenoids are primarily yellow in hue. When bound together, the protein complex is green.

During the larval stage, M. sexta caterpillars feed on plants of the family Solanaceae, principally tobacco and members of the Datura family of plants. Near the end of this stage, the caterpillar seeks a location for pupation, burrows underground, and pupates. The searching behaviour is known as "wandering." The instinct of wandering can be visually confirmed by spotting the heart (aorta) which is a long, pulsating vein running along the length of the caterpillar's dorsal side. The heart appears just as the caterpillar is reaching the end of the final instar. M. sexta has five larval instars which are separated by ecdysis (molting), but may add larval instars when nutrient conditions are poor.

A common biological control for hornworms is the parasitic braconid wasp, Cotesia, which lays its eggs in the bodies of tobacco hornworms. The wasp larvae feed internally, and emerge from the body to spin their cocoons. Parasitized tobacco hornworms are often seen covered with multiple white, cottony wasp cocoons, which are often mistaken for large eggs.

13. Project: Tamar Frank

Project: Fireflies

Location De Effenaar

The pond at the Effenaar is filled with blue fog and populated by fireflies. The insects are hidden in the reeds and communicate through pulses of light. Sometimes the swarm pulsate synchronous, making strong light concentrations. In Fireflies the audience controls the behavior of the fireflies. It is as if the visitors upset the insects so that they fly off a little further and quietly resume their original pulse.

With this installation Tamar Frank reinforces the contrast between the clean lines of the Effenaar and surrounding concrete buildings and the flourishing vegetation in the pond. She changes the area around the platform in an artificial natural park, in the midst of the city. This enlargement of the reality reminisces of the eerie, swampy areas that we know from adventure movies and comics.

Eindhoven 2011 I 6th Edition I ‘Illusion and reality’

Due to the dedication of CityDynamiek Eindhoven, from November, 5th to 12th, 2011, the city center of Eindhoven turns again into a forum of interventions, installations, performances and events based on the phenomena of artificial light. From their website.

Eindhoven (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɛintˌɦoːvə(n)] is a municipality and a city located in the province of North Brabant in the south of the Netherlands, originally at the confluence of the Dommel and Gender streams. The Gender was dammed off short of the city centre in the 1950s, but the Dommel still runs through the city. The city counts 213,809 inhabitants (1 January 2010), which makes it the fifth-largest city of the Netherlands and the largest of North-Brabant.

Neighbouring cities and towns include Son en Breugel, Nuenen, Geldrop-Mierlo, Heeze-Leende, Waalre, Veldhoven, Eersel, Oirschot and Best. The agglomeration has some 440,000 inhabitants. The metropolitan area (which includes Helmond) has nearly 750,000 inhabitants. Also, Eindhoven is part of Brabant Stad, a combined metropolitan area with more than 2 million inhabitants. From: wiki.

If I open to look I never find the impetus to continue with posting these images and a snippet of the original text.

Here is a part of the notes and some of the images from a collections of images that have found their way into the digitising archive. The numbered allocations refer to the new catalogue allocation, not to the old ones, but the titles of the images remain the same even though the numbers have changed. I have spent some frightening times trying to post these images and to have them and the text stay in the current catalogue. Each time I try to review and edit the pictures I am filled with sleep that on waking was full of strange nightmares, more than once I have been in a sleep at the keyboard and wake to find that my head has found a pillow on the keys and I have ‘face typed’ all over the digital documents that I was creating for the archive. If you can see these images and read the accompanying text I hope that they do not effect you as they have effected and even haunted me?

“The storms have kept us busy trying to keep the weather out of the house that has now become our beautiful, but beleaguered on site research laboratory. We are too tired to investigate further for now and it seems the phantasmagoria that raised the storm is now lulling us towards sleep. We try to get this information, this confirmation through to you, but we are too sceptical of our findings to share them fully and cannot begin to think of the further ramifications of our discoveries. The natural elements have challenged us since we were first seen recording the disturbing phenomenon that others here will not acknowledge. It was a foolhardy notion that struck me to bring more and more laboratory equipment with me after we decided to set up here.

It seems too long ago that I first decided to spend a long weekend at Halliard’s House and I wish that I never had. The rough gruff social manner, the exterior curves and whiskers of Dr. Halliard had led to him being referred to as The Walrus. Some thought that he had coined the term himself to give leave to be the surly, swift in sarcasm and slow in praise creature he seemed. To some he created a character that he mainly preferred to play in most situations and to some he never changed. He was next to rude and not available much of the time, yet he was the one who seemed to find you when you needed help the most. He was credited in many student submissions as being the sounding board, the inspiration, or the indicator of information and even the executor of application that gave struggling near quitting students the essential breakthrough that they so badly required.

I mention him, his house and talk of him as an executor. Simply put, though complex over many years and several different projects, through joint ventures he and I had raised funds on our respective properties and had gone into a creation of a partnership in separate contracts to protect and prosper our intellectual property and to begin testing towards real time application of our developments. He often said that I had unwittingly become the heir to his empire as he was very fixed on the idea that he was living out his last years. There was no outward appearance of ill health and to my caring inquires whenever he made his latest statement of my being in line to his empire he would say that he was hale and hearty from good healthy stock, but that he knew a time was approaching when he, like his forebears would drop upon the spot fulfilling an active life to the last breath. His last note to me said to me that were close to a breakthrough and that we needed more equipment on site. Out of some thoughts of honouring our original agreements and to keep a tight hold on the discoveries I have involved as few people as possible and now find myself here isolated and afraid.

I am rambling and slightly incoherent in my thoughts. Before sleep I want to share images and reveal something of our findings. I am bound by all sorts of threads that keep me from blurting out some necessary information. I have mentioned Halliard and the House. He is dead and I need people to know what is occurring in and around this place. I am not at liberty to reveal my name, or the line of work I am in. The research Halliard and I went into is a part of this story, I need legal clarification before I place myself against criminal charges. It was Halliard who mentioned bringing our equipment to his house. He said family memories would prevent him taking part in any such experiment, but he recommended the secluded spot for security and for a break from the too clinical settings in the full-time laboratories.

It was a great foundation to have necessary conditions and equipment required for the development of this project. Even if his dwelling would be completely the wrong environment for the full scale test and eventual application we had a great niche here in which we could nestle. I can still hear his words ringing in my mind. As I agreed to set up the home laboratories with two tests in progress I missed out on registering the words and his emphasis he placed on them, “Not right for me to make my home a testing centre, but the space is ready and waiting for you to conduct the required experiments that will lead to the next phase of development.” He foresaw that I alone would be here in this house as experiments delivered the results and indicated further potential beyond our original prospect.

Sleep is folding in on me, let me just reveal a few images. They are numbered and each have title and captions that leads towards explanations of what we have experienced and identified. Please if you can be open eyed, open hearted and open minded? Dismiss everything possible that you can until there is nothing left remaining, nothing except the potential beyond the science that we know and rely on. It took us time to unravel the tapestry of the past here that indicates why this place is more remote and more secluded than many, it is as some other such places removed from current society for reasons sometimes known, or half known to the locals and to those drawn to the history of such places. This site has been a stopping places for some peculiar figures and served as an outpost for strange societies. This place was never a staging post, rather it remains a dead end, a quiet road along which only those destined for this spot travel. Again I feel unable to reveal the requisite information, to list our path to conclusions as secrecy binds me. I can and I want to say that I will gladly reveal our data from several analytical inquires and I say too much when I state we have evidence of communication, of exchange of message sent and received in clear form of two-way communication. Don’t think of voice and answer in a language sense, don’t think of a direct scale of tone to answer tone. Think nothing of those two potentials and in the nothing of those is where we found what I am now sure Halliard knew to look for.”

If you are immune to the overpowering pull present within the pictures, or if you can understand the process better that I then please progress in your way and enjoy what you find and what you can look past.

Here are the new index allocation of the images all of which should be in a single folder together.
