This new image from Hubble’s Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 showcases NGC 1501, a complex planetary nebula located in the large but faint constellation of Camelopardalis (The Giraffe). Discovered by William Herschel in 1787, NGC 1501 is a planetary nebula that is just under 5000 light-years away from us. Astronomers have modelled the three-dimensional structure of the nebula, finding it to be a cloud shaped as an irregular ellipsoid filled with bumpy and bubbly regions. It has a bright central star that can be seen easily in this image, shining brightly from within the nebula’s cloud. This bright pearl embedded within its glowing shell inspired the nebula’s popular nickname: the Oyster Nebula. While NGC 1501's central star blasted off its outer shell long ago, it still remains very hot and luminous, although it is quite tricky for observers to spot through modest telescopes. This star has actually been the subject of many studies by astronomers due to one very unusual feature: it seems to be pulsating, varying quite significantly in brightness over a typical timescale of just half an hour. While variable stars are not unusual, it is uncommon to find one at the heart of a planetary nebula. It is important to note that the colours in this image are arbitrary. A version of this image was entered into the Hubble’s Hidden Treasures image processing competition by contestant Marc Canale. Links Marc Canale on Flickr

Edited Chandra Space Telescope/XMM-Newton image of a black hole pulsating (or at least the material/radiation around the black hole) in the galaxy GSN 069. Animated GIF of the pulsation. To view animation, click on View all sizes and select Original size.
Original caption: A supermassive black hole is blasting out X-rays about every nine hours, according to data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton, as described in our latest press release. This indicates that this black hole, containing about 400,000 times the mass of our Sun, is consuming significant amounts of material about three times per day.
The main panel of this graphic is a visible light image taken by the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) around the galaxy known as GSN 069, located in the center of the image. The inset gives a time-lapse of Chandra data taken over a period of about 20 hours on February 14 and 15, 2019, centered on the X-ray source in the middle of GSN 069. The sequence runs in a loop to show that the X-ray brightness of the source changes regularly and dramatically over the Chandra observation. Three X-ray eruptions are observed. (Note that to clearly show the Chandra source is located in GSN 069, the size of the box in the center of the DSS image is about ten times larger than the Chandra field in the inset.)
XMM-Newton was the first to observe this phenomenon in GSN 069 with the detection of two bursts on December 24, 2018. Researchers then followed up with more XMM-Newton observations on January 16 and 17, 2019, and found five outbursts. The Chandra observations less than a month later — on February 14 and 15 — revealed an additional three outbursts.
These repetitive outbursts are evidence that the supermassive black hole at the center of GSN 069, located 250 million light years from Earth, is consuming about four Moons' worth of material about three times a day. That's equivalent to almost a million billion billion pounds going into the black hole per feeding.
While scientists had previously found two "stellar-mass" black holes (that weigh about 10 times the Sun's mass) occasionally undergoing regular outbursts before, this behavior has never been detected from a supermassive black hole until now.
During the outbursts the X-ray emission detected by Chandra becomes about 20 times brighter than during the quiet times. The temperature of gas falling towards the black hole also climbs, from about one million degrees Fahrenheit during the quiet periods to about 2.5 million degrees Fahrenheit during the outbursts. The temperature of the latter is similar to that of gas found around most actively growing supermassive black holes.
The origin of this hot gas has been a long-standing mystery because it appears to be too hot to be associated with the disk of infalling matter surrounding the black holes. Although its origin is also a mystery in GSN 069, the ability to study a supermassive black hole where hot gas repeatedly forms then disappears may provide important clues.
The Chandra data were crucial for this study because they were able to show that the X-ray source is located in the center of the host galaxy, which is where a supermassive black hole is expected to be. The combination of data from Chandra and XMM-Newton implies that the size and duration of the black hole's meals have decreased slightly, and the gap between the meals has increased. Future observations will be crucial to see if the trend continues.
A paper describing these results, with lead author Giovanni Minuitti (ESA's Center of Astrobiology in Spain), appeared in the September 11, 2019 issue of the journal Nature. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center manages the Chandra program. The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's Chandra X-ray Center controls science and flight operations from Cambridge, Massachusetts.
"Insistent, pulsating, and hip-swiveling grooves are what England’s exciting Friendly Fires are known for, and frontman Ed Macfarlane’s energetic and Jagger-esque gyrations are guaranteed to make the ladies this side of the pond swoon. Quickly coming up on the scene after releasing their supreme sophomore effort Pala, the three-piece (which formed back when Macfarlane, Edd Gibson, and Jack Savidge were merely 13 years old) have been touring heavily this summer to broadcast their frenetic brand of electro-tinged dance punk and sing-along pop lyrics to the masses. Influenced by a variety of musical genres (hardcore punk, techno, and even boy band pop tunes), Friendly Fires have created a novel and exciting sound and have quickly earned the reputation of being one of the most high-energy, passionate, and downright fun, live acts to hit the stage. They remain singularly focused on putting on a vibrant show and inviting the crowd to lose inhibitions and become a part of the action—massive booty-shaking is sure to occur when they hit the stage. Throughout October 2010 the 37 meter glass obelisque ("Kristall - vertikal accent i glas och stål" by Edvin Öhrström) shone pink to commemorate the fight against breast cancer. The sunken square and street system surrounding it was intended as a 40 year temporary solution back in the sixties. The obelisque was added in 1974. Its internal lighting system is finally working as intended. Demolition is not imminent, as City Hall has lost sight of the original plans. Besides, 40 years turned out to be ample time to become culturally significant.
I dreamt you were lying on an island completely nude you were covered by sand from head to feet.. the flickering life was the pulsating sand on your breasts that rose and fell , rose and fell..as though someone was stroking you from within.. the wind shamelessly tried to kiss you each time it wantonly blew across the slope s and curves the mound of your being.. but you remained unmoved ,undisturbed ,like the Sphynix tantalizing all tension around.. the lacsivious waves tried to smother you..foaming and frothing to uncover your gems that sparkled allured the surrounding silence of your soul.
Wave after wave could not wake you from your repose.,sculpted form of human delight.. the long limbs that sparkled in the rays of the sun.. the legs that branched out and the holy delta like the source of the river Nile.. the pride of your gait and form.. I heard a cry woke up to see that you were gone from my human vision.. I was alone on the island.. I dipped my head in the natural pond within the enveloped waters of crystallized reflection saw you sleeping undisturbed ..with the smirk of a smile..you would never be mine.I was way out of line....a hardness that rocked the door of my Divine.

LONDON: A stunning overhead kick by Neal Maupay cancelled out Tomas Soucek's early goal as Brighton & Hove Albion came back to draw 1-1 at West Ham United in a pulsating Premier League clash on Wednesday.
Hammers midfielder Soucek struck in the fifth minute, guiding a deft glancing header from Pablo Fornals's corner past Robert Sanchez to give his side the lead as Brighton got off to a nightmare start.
Seagulls boss Graham Potter was forced to make two changes before halftime as Jeremy Sarmiento and Adam Webster both picked up injuries and had to be replaced by Solly March and Shane Duffy.
Despite having to reshuffle their pack, Brighton came storming back and Jakob Moder should have put them level after he was teed up by Maupay just before the break, but he fired his effort into the legs of Lukasz Fabianski.
The visitors opened the second half with two more good chances for March and Lewis Dunk before West Ham had another goal from a corner ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR review.
With West Ham looking to hit on the counter-attack, Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez pulled off a brace of superb saves to keep his side in it, with one full-length diving effort to deny Declan Rice bringing roars of approval from the travelling fans.
Brighton continued to dominate possession but struggled to convert their slick passing into goal-scoring chances until Maupay threw himself into the air to fire home Tariq Lamptey's cross from the right in the 89th minute and snatch a point.
"There's a really good spirit in the team, in the group, in the club, we'll fight to the end... in the end it's a fantastic point for us," Potter said in an interview with the club's YouTube channel.
The draw stretches Brighton's streak to nine league games without a win and leaves them seventh in the table on 19 points, while West Ham remain fourth on 24 points.
"We were disappointed (to concede a late goal) but probably a draw was a fair result. Brighton played well but we did half-miss some opportunities on a night when the decisions didn't go for us," West Ham manager David Moyes told the BBC.
"We gave the ball away regularly which is not what we are used to. All credit to Brighton, we didn't take our opportunities to go two ahead," he added.

Last night, several parts of my hometown were basked in bright twinkling lights and the pulsating beats of Indian drums. There was a festival in progress. As I drove by the front of this temple, I snatched this shot. As I’m writing this, I listening to the fast beats of Indian music stirring the heat I felt last night as I moved among the devotees. As the beats coursed through my vein, I felt the urgency of doing something in flickr I’ve not done before. I’m going to rush this event while it is still in progress.
Please pardon the quality of my shots. I only have a point and shoot camera with me and it has limitation especially with night scenes. I’m not trying to take good pictures but capture honestly the passionI felt last night. I did not even have time to probably select and write about these scenes as I want to rush off to take the festival in progress today after I uploaded this.
The blue dot in this image marks the spot of an energetic pulsar -- the magnetic, spinning core of star that blew up in a supernova explosion. NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, discovered the pulsar by identifying its telltale pulse -- a rotating beam of X-rays, that like a cosmic lighthouse, intersects Earth every 0.2 seconds. The pulsar, called PSR J1640-4631, lies in our inner Milky Way galaxy about 42,000 light-years away. It was originally identified by as an intense source of gamma rays by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in Namibia. NuSTAR helped pin down the source of the gamma rays to a pulsar. The other pink dots in this picture show low-energy X-rays detected by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. In this image, NuSTAR data is blue and shows high-energy X-rays with 3 to 79 kiloelectron volts; Chandra data is pink and shows X-rays with 0.5 to 10 kiloeletron volts. The background image shows infrared light and was captured by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/SAO via NASA ift.tt/1yh5mdI

#smalltowninertia New story, live.

It was as though watching a man drowning beneath the ice.
I see him hitching for breath, chest heaving, eyes wild, fingers whipping at the indifferent, almost invisible, wall above.
I can do nothing but witness.
I, as trapped in these moments, as he imprisoned below, our eyes now connected. His fear, his absolute and consuming terror is loud within his gaze, as loud, I imagine, as his frozen water screams, muted by the barrier between us.
His fear resonates, pulsates with the realisation that we are both completely aware of what is happening and both completely helpless to alter a single fucking thing.
It was watching time run out.It was watching a trapped man caught in the throes of desperation.
It was watching a car crash in slow motion. It was watching a plane fall from the sky, aflame.
It was face pressed to the observation slit upon the cell of a forgotten and falsely imprisoned man in solitary confinement.
It was each and all of these things. It was as though they were all real.
It was and is, this real.
Witnessing Tilney1’s battle with Paranoid Schizophrenia over the course of the past 12 months, his medication changes, his endurance in isolation, his fight to exist and to navigate existence with and often without the regular support and contact with professional care teams, has been brutally illuminating.
Living alone can often be a vicious limbo. Coupled with Tilney1’s symptoms, fears and the crippling effects of his diagnosis and medications, life for Tilney1 has been brutal.
A change in C.P.N’s (Community Psychiatric Nurse) home visits from crisis teams dwindling, due to their own battle with staffing and budget cuts to local mental health services, led to Tilney1 missing medication.
It began, slowly. A missed pill here, a skipped pill there. Soon, bags of unopened medication were stockpiled within his bathroom. With each pill missed, a little more of Tilney1’s character traits, for years suppressed by medication, would rush to the surface.
It was a dangerous game, addictive. With each pill missed, a little more self-confidence and a little more, a little more, a little more. A dangerous game, for soon, without correct and timetabled medication, with no medicinal brakes nor physical checks to slow his diagnosis and it’s multiple symptoms, this initial rush of confidence, of euphoria, would lead to mania and manic episodes.
A potent and cruel trick, being so close to a remembered self, to be led by a hand, so soothing, to seem in reality to be escaping the trap of the prison within the self, yet all the while being led to the inevitable crash.
Especially cruel as Tilney1 was able to watch all this happening to himself, to have that insight, possess that awareness, yet to be completely incapable of intervening, of stopping, to be trapped beneath the ice, screaming for a way out.

Now this caterpillar/moth project reached it's end here are finally some more photos and videos.
Of the in total 11 pupas I was able to see the 10 moths of them, all Scar Bank gems. Probably a migrant for Mallorca. So far it wasn't recorded for the Balearic islands?
All the caterpillars were on old and new mint plants.

Scientist Pick: Whatever dark energy is, explanations for it have less wiggle room following a Hubble Space Telescope observation that refined the measurement of the universe's present expansion rate. Hubble observations of pulsating stars called Cepheid variables in a nearby cosmic mile marker, the galaxy NGC 4258, and in the host galaxies of recent supernovae, directly link these distance indicators. Allerton Garden (Lawa'i Kai) is on Kauai's south shore and is one of five gardens managed by the National Tropical Botanical Garden. A popular attraction at Allerton Garden is the Mermaid fountain. Soothing pulses of water flow out of a channel from the fountain. The water flows smoothly into the channel but, by the time the water reaches the end of the channel, the water is pulsating at a uniform rate. Though unusual, it's merely science at work and I recorded the pulses for this video.
While out walking around the University campus this evening I saw a flash of light in the distance, golden hour was fast approaching but not a cloud in the sky. Could it be lightning, or was it just someone in the distance snapping a photo of me? As I looked closer, I found that the pulsating lights were coming from the recently opened and recently renovated (2011) Union South. As I got closer, I saw many people standing around as if recently evacuated: but a voice came over the loud speakers. Announcing that anyone in the building was to exit immediately, as the fire detector had been activated. Ive never come across a building so advanced, but as I rounded the corner I found Madisons finest escorting people out of the building. Once it appeared they were all out, the firemen went in.
About ten minutes passed and the flashing had stopped, and voices on loudspeaker grew silent. The only noise was the hum of emergancy vehicles outside. Firefighters then emerged from the building, suits as dry and clean as when they had entered. Although, I am not the pyro paparazzi today: after all not everyday can be as hot as the other.
