Flintstones, meet the Flintstones! Bedrock City is a roadside attraction on the way to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Roadside attractions were built as "tourist traps" with gift shops and things to do for kids, a place where a family could rest after a long drive on the way to somewhere. Built in 1972, Bedrock City was modeled after "The Flintstones" cartoon from the 1960s. And Bedrock City still survives. For now. Owner Linda Speckels is selling it for $2 million to someone who will keep Bedrock City operating. Bedrock City has a Fredmobile train ride looping through Mt. St. Wilma (a volcano). The Bedrock Theater plays Flintstones cartoons with the audio broadcast over loudspeakers. There's a campsite, diner, convenience store, and a large gift shop. And of course, there is Bedrock City, built to resemble the stone age town of Bedrock from the cartoon "The Flintstones". Will it be here in a year? Who knows.

I had hoped to return to the ghosttown for some night shots of the ruins against the harsh terrain and night sky, but the weather proved extremely uncooperative. Eventually I settled for a few interior shots before calling it a night...

The entire time I was doing this shot, I could hear a some sort of animal scratching at the bottom of the cab. Oddly, the truck had also been moved about 30 feet from where I saw it on a previous visit. With no engine or transmission, you'd have to do the Flintstones thing through the hole in the floorboards.

Metolius was founded in the early 1900s. 1911 brought the Oregon Trunk Railroad's decision to build a depot, turntable and roundhouse in town. At the time, water was a necessity for railroad engines at regular intervals. So Metolius was picked as a servicing spot. In 1912, electricity was provided from a small dam at the Cove Palisades. In 1913, a high school and grade school were built. The town continued to prosper during the war years. By 1917, the population was over 1,700. As railroad technology improved, maintenance stations were required less frequently. So the Metolius shop was eliminated. Without the railroad, the population of Metolius declined. In the 1920s, a major fire destroyed most of the downtown buildings. From 1924 to 1926, drought drove many farmers broke. Then the great depression almost finished off the town of Metolius. By 1945, the population was down to about 45 people. By the 2010 census, the population was up to 710.

Randi Hubbard is the artist that created this 600 pound, 5-foot-6, hidden away sculpture, memorializing Kurt Cobain, in Aberdeen Washington. It was created in 1994. Finished three months after Kurt's death.
