First time I visited the abandoned Grantsville, Nevada mining district in 2001 there was a very large, very old Caterpillar bulldozer parked beside the mill. It was almost complete. Visiting again in May 2012 I found it almost completely gone. Metal scrappers had used blowtorches to carve it into manageable pieces and dragged them to the recycler. Only the seat frame, part of the chassis rails and engine/driveline remain. It'll probably ALL be gone the next time I make it out there again. Judging by the graf on there, I'm not the only one disappointed by this.

The camera was placed along the machine's centerline, just at the ends of the cut off frame rails, to take advantage of its innate symmetry. It's parked on a slope, so I left the camera level, taking advantage of the scene's natural lean in an effort to break up the stiff, static nature of perfectly symmetrical images. I also made sure to break the horizon line with the top of the seat and levers: to get that sick green to pop against the blue sky and to follow the angle of the hill.

Lit with the Protomachines flashlight, I mixed up a strong yellow/green that complimented the natural color of the dozer and lit her from both sides. Then I lit the ground underneath with red from below the camera, bouncing it up onto the engine block. 332 second exposure, full moon.

It's strange how some of the most meaningful messages keep showing up in these most unexpected locations.

With the arctic winds kicking up (and my fingers getting numb), my shooting was also becoming fast and loose...

Rainbow Filling Station (4735)

Abandoned gas station with graffiti, Barstow, CA. llluminated very colorfully by a ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight and a full moon. Nikon D610/14-24mm f/2.8, 127s @ f/8 ISO 200 Oct 2016.

This is a real photo taken at night. This evening, everything was illuminated by a big bright moon, an almost full moon, almost bright enough to read a book. And setting my tripod-mounted camera to a long exposure made the camera much more sensitive to light than our eyes on this already bright evening. This is why this photo seems brighter than what we might see at night. It is not due to post-processing. The moon, which reflects light from the sun, also makes the sky bluer, and when the photo is a long exposure photo, the sky will appear brighter, making the blue more apparent. I also illuminated the interior in a very colorful manner with a handheld LED flashlight while the camera shutter was open, grazing light off the walls, ceiling, and floor. This is not a post-processing creation. No pixels were harmed during the creation of this photo. :D

I am fascinated with how a single long exposure photo can show movements and the cumulative effects of light in a single image, and how it can show beauty in abandoned places. Thank you for reading this and looking at the image. -Ken

This is a puffin in the Látrabjarg Bird Cliffs in Iceland. And now, I will entertain you with some fun facts: - Puffins only have their Technicolor bill part of the time, during mating season.

- They are nicknamed "sea parrots", or sometimes "clowns of the sea".

- Puffins are amazing swimmers, and can dive 60m underwater. So, like, that'd be almost 200 feet under the surface.

- The Látrabjarg Bird Cliffs are the westernmost part of Europe.

- Puffins can be found on menus of some restaurants around Reykjavik.

- I think this is the first time I ever seriously tried to photograph wild birds.

- I did not use any Photoshop Cartoon Function to make this fine bird look like Toucan Sam.

Excuse Me While I Touch The Sky (5302)

The moon, which reflects light from the sun, also makes the sky bluer, and when the photo is a long exposure photo, the sky will appear brighter, making the blue more apparent. No pixels were harmed during the creation of this photo. :D I used a Pinout remote controller/app to set and trigger the camera.

I took this photo in Joshua Tree National Park, CA, hanging out with Dave Dasinger while doing so. JTNP is my spiritual home for night photography, and it felt utterly fantastic to return here to photograph here at night and hike during the day.

A lot is unknown about this cabin, we do know it was owned by a guy named Will Green, he had a zoo & a whole lot of other stuff on his property. This old place is at least from the 30's, and yes probably older than that. Possibly even traces back to the "bleeding kansas" days. If your interested you can read an actual article about it, just follow the link...

The Land of Roar

~~~~~
One of the battling dinosaurs in Borrego Springs, the Carnotaurus unleashes his otherworldly roar that shakes the very stars. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the enormous dinosaur with warm white light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images.
